Who formulates a request like this? Set a timer for 20 seconds and it will set a timer for 20 seconds.

Fair, but why can't a computer correctly compute what 1/3 of 60 is?

If nothing else, this inability from Siri really highlights how incompetent it is

Think of how that likely manifests itself under the hood as a type of problem for other requests

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you "Siri"

I think Siri is nothing to be proud about, but this request is just weird.

It's weird? Are the words 'third' and 'three' confusing for you?

I agree with @Godspeed8230, the request seems purposefully chosen to confuse and falls within the realm of "what I think you meant vs what you actually meant", along the same lines as autocorrect mistakes.

Even though it should be easy, no one ever asks for a third or fifth of a minute.

There was a post about one of the things we can do with 18.1 is not expose our Apple ID email when sharing notes or calendar events, and we can use a different email address. Where would I go for this (Assuming I read that right)?

Does 18.1 have any non-AI features for those of us with iPhone 14s or older?

I thought the "new" Siri was a basic feature not an AI iPhone 15 + feature

Apple recently confirmed that iOS 18.1 will be widely released to the public this week. The software update includes the first Apple Intelligence features for iPhone 15 Pro models and all iPhone 16 models, a set of hearing health features for the AirPods Pro 2, phone call recording on the iPhone XS and newer, and more.

Ahead of iOS 18.1 being released, Apple is already advertising Apple Intelligence as being "here" in a Reddit ad, hinting at the update's imminent availability.

Here are some of the key Apple Intelligence features coming with iOS 18.1:

  • A few Siri enhancements, including a new appearance with a glowing light that wraps around the edge of the screen, and improved understanding for both follow-up requests and when you stumble over your words
  • Writing tools for rewriting, summarizing, and proofreading text
  • Notification summaries
  • Suggested replies in the Messages and Mail apps
  • A new "Clean Up" tool in the Photos app that can remove unwanted people or objects from photos and use generative AI to fill in the background
  • The ability to create a "Memories" movie in the Photos app by typing a description
  • Transcription summaries for phone call recordings
  • A new Focus mode called Reduce Interruptions that surfaces important notifications only
See our full list of Apple Intelligence features included in iOS 18.1 for even more.

Apple Intelligence will gain more features and support for additional languages on a gradual basis between iOS 18.2 and iOS 18.4. iOS 18.2 is already in beta, and it adds Apple Intelligence features such as Genmoji, Image Playground, Image Wand, and ChatGPT integration for Siri, as well as Visual Intelligence exclusively on all iPhone 16 models. iOS 18.2 is expected to be widely released to the public in December.

iOS 18.1 supports the same iPhone models as iOS 17 does, but Apple Intelligence requires an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model. On iOS 18.1, Apple Intelligence is available in U.S. English only, with more localized English languages for the U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa coming with iOS 18.2. Additional languages like German, Italian, and Korean will follow next year.

No hearing aid for the UK 😢

Ok so why doesn’t my entire screen surround flash on my 11” M1 Pro iPad when I ask Siri something now? I though that was a thing?

He had other examples of really bad Siri responses

In any case, weird or not, a computer assistant should know what a minute is and what a third of that is

It's a constructed example. No one will type in a reminder for 20 seconds since the a large percentage of the time will have elapsed until you're done typing.

For those who are smart enough, how about just set a countdown to 20 seconds?

Agree with you 100%
If for no other reason than the performance hit on devices like M1's

I really hope it's fully (and truly) optional
You know what? I didn’t even think about the performance hit, I just keep thinking that AI is going to make people lose the ability to think for themselves and put too much trust where it shouldn’t be placed. Now that you mention the performance hit, now I have another reason to hate AI 😀

Late to the party hopefully means done properly.

I reserve judgement however.

I’m about to but hesitating.
Even when Apple is late to the party in the name of “getting it right”, the track record lately shows that we will get a couple of nice new features but 10 previous unrelated others will be broken, a chance higher than zero for bricking the device will be perpetually latent, etc

The good old trick of “if it ain’t broken, BREAK IT!!”

But nothing seems to be sticking out in the news to my knowledge.
