I've never quite understood the point of the flashlight shortcut button on the Lock Screen in iOS since you can access the camera just as easily simply by swiping to the left.

At least that button is going to get replaced by something more useful on my phone, just don't know what yet.

What are you guys going to use for the shortcut buttons on your iPhone?

Because Apple had priorities elsewhere.

I guess Apple solved all the big problems since they are finally working on low-priority things like icon placement.

Let's hope there aren't any big showstopping bugs in iOS 18 because people will start blaming the icon team:

"Dangit! We put too many engineers on the 'auto-wrap-left-snap-to-grid' feature of SpringBoard!"

:p

Apart from being fairly insensitive to people who have visual impairments, you must really hate the icons and spacing on iPadOS...
Apple doesn't have to limit the icon layout to a max of 4. If people have impairments, they should be able to set the max to 4 or 3 or 2. Or better yet, there should be an accessibility feature that makes the entire OS friendly to those people with impairments.

And all of these are yawn features to anyone that has used an Android device and I don't think Apple deserves any credit for adding them. It took them 15 years to allow iPhone users to allow them to move icons. Wow. What a revolution...

This. Most of this stuff was available with jailbreaking a decade ago.

I know this will elicit the usual "Jailbreaking was bad because it prevents Apple from keeping you safe!" reaction, and I'm not wading into that old debate. However, it does tell you something about what a 3 trillion dollar company has — somewhat inexplicably, although I can theorize — decided not to do over all these years.
I think it's well understood Apple took the approach of "we know what you want and need better than you" - the idea that the consumer will like what we give them and everything else is just noise hence the lack of options and choice.

I've been on since beta 1 and it isn't really anything special. Not much you can do and none of it even looks that good. The dark mode icons are kind of cool though.

Calm down. ICONS and wallpaper. If those are your biggest issues in life, you are blessed. I have tried and failed to use an Android phone (Pixel), iOS is just better. Moving, resizing, coloring, screens and icons, I don't care. Nice sure, but its the core OS that makes the phone, and for me it's always been the iPhone.

you're right... it's such a yawn feature, Apple should just not bother adding it at all.
you've done without it for so long, why bother adding it now?

i don't get why every time Apple add something, people feel the need to bag it as "what a revolution".
it's not meant to be a revolution. it's just an addition. simple. use it or don't. your choice.

iOS devices have for a long time had accessibility features. they make a huge difference to disabled users who already struggle to get through a day compared to able bodied people. i've long worked with older and disabled clients. IT can make a huge difference to quality of life and enjoyment.

I guess Apple solved all the big problems
Whilst there are basic interactions that sit away from your thuymbs they haven't remotely finished with the big problems!

iOS (and Android to be fair) have far too many interactions that sit outside the comfort of your thumbs. I'd put good money on the majority of dropped iPhones being because somebody took a knock trying to reach control centre or notifications with one hand. The fudge of reachability doesn't count; that was clearly a stopgap that has ended up getting left in.

It wouldn't be too hard to add bottom-up notifications and control centre to the multitasking view.

Was hoping there was a way to just remove the name from widgets but leave them for the icons...doesn't look as though thats going to be the case though

Finally!
Because when people were saying that Android has such features people were like: "I don't need such options. It's for children" and now everybody's so happy that it's coming to the iOS. All of those features have been on Android for years.
Unfortunately the absolutely dire Play store whose apps are woeful in terms of support and updates compared to their iOS counterparts, has also been on Android for years..

Now that we can put app icons (and widgets) anywhere, does iPadOS 18 still reduce the number of app icons that can be on the Home Screen when a widget is added (changing from a 5x6 grid to a 4x6 grid)?

I mean you dont have to use the Features. If you prefer the default look just dont use the features. It will look exactly the same. But you do you
I’m well aware of what I don’t have to use. Much like RCS and all these bs android like features I won’t be using them.

I hate the icon tints it blinds me, I prefer the large dark mode icons without the app names it’s very minimalist.

What we need now is for app developers to also make an option for dark mode for their apps.
You could make it even more minimalist by turning off the Search button (Settings → Home Screen & App Library → Search toggle).

Now if we can get the ability to pause during video recording and continue when needed.. that would be a game changer. I'm tired of making multiple videos and editing them to make one video.

There used to be a time in which you could arrange your icons on the screen on your connected Mac. That was great. Much better to do, place the icons than now on the screen of the phone itself. It always feels a little clumsy

Rainbow Time, really? Christ, at least give us the ability to customize separate colors for hours and minutes and a blinking colon in sync with seconds.

Here is a few suggestions:
  • remove App Library
  • icon name fade out
  • dark mode clock icon with dead-beat seconds
  • Split screen
  • >Free< floating Picture in Picture
  • Status bar fade out
At this point just go android lol and stop trying to make iOS android.
