I agree. And the thing is, I don't have a problem with Apple iOS copying Google Android, Android has taken things from iOS over the years too, but the way Apple frames it as an amazing "new" feature is cringe and funny in equal measure.

Android 14 is a GREAT mobile OS, and superior to ios17 in my opinion. I think Android on the Pixel has been ahead for a few years now so its not surprising Apple will port some things over. I think a lot of iOS users form their opinion on Android devices from Samsung phones from 5 years ago, pure Android 14 on a Pixel 8 Pro is genuinely amazing.

Android 15 vs ios18 might be a closer fight, depends how much Apple improves Siri (for me at least). The new collapsible volume slider and "Private Space" on Android 15 look amazing, I'd love to have those on my 15 Pro.
can you explain what Android 14 on a Pixel 8 Pro has that is amazing?

I can't see much difference in anything from picking and playing in store.
So is it something in the actual day to day use that I'm not seeing?

Not sure what the SAP programming language has to do with anything.

Meanwhile, I hate to break it to you but the iOS keyboard is a “real” keyboard and has been since v1. Just because you don’t like something doesn’t make it not real.

Also iOS has supported custom keyboards since iOS 8, which was released a DECADE ago.

If you’re going to troll you might want to actually know what you are talking about first…

You might want to try again.
Find me a stock keyboard that works across all stock Apple apps on an iPhone that has a number row.

I mentioned ABAP in response to your software comment.

Can you move multiple app icons at once? Moving them one by one is such a PITA. It was so much easier back in the day when you could rearrange your app icons in iTunes.

Ironic how the first iPhone to introduce Lock Screen buttons will never get the option to change them.
For the entirety of the X‘s life people were hoping Apple would allow us to change this software mandate.
Never.

But that seems so Apple.
The first to get it now is the first to miss out later.

Apple and tech aren't startup companies anymore. They are core businesses for pretty much everyone.
Apple under Jobs struggled. It needed innovation and taking chances. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didnt.
But they learnt quickly and adapted.

Today a phone is more likely to face competition from last year's model.
That's the same of any mature industry.
Look at upstarts that try to muscle in... Rabbit phone? It looked like a fanciful joke and proved to be from reviews of shipped items.

Hardware is now plenty powerful to do almost anything you want.
We aren't seeing exponential jumps in speed.

The roadmap now is steady as she goes. Hence they dip their toes in AI and Vision to find a way forward. Neither are really mainstream yet. But you can see the roadmap.

Butterfly keyboard is years old. It didnt affect every device. I have one. It's never missed a beat.
When Jobs died there was already a long lead time of products he had mapped out.
Cook just continued on for a while following that roadmap.

Yeah RAM and SSD are high. That's what Apple do.
I'm old enough to remember when Apple IIs were exorbinate (but then PCs were too in today's money).
To complain any tech is overpriced now - it's basically disposable.
The value lies in your files and content.

And experience has proven that Apple hardware is much more reliable longterm.
I rarely got 3 years out of a Windows laptop. I have 11 year old Macs that boot and work fast enough still to hand down to tech novices who can be productive on them.

As for bugs, Apple have always released updates often.
And started the free OS upgrades. Yes, I did the late night queues for new Windows OS releases. Hard to imagine anyone doing that now AND paying for it.

Google is indeed losing the plot. It's all monetizing the customer.
Do any of us really need a new phone every year or two or three even?
But there's no money stream if they dont keep releasing them.
OS bugs will always exist when the focus is on new.

My S5 Watch loses battery like crazy after OS10 compared to my S3 that still lasts hours longer.
Someone under spec'ed the battery or didnt bother to optimize the OS for that Watch.
Are they ever going to fix it? No... they hope you will buy a new one.

Sadly we live in a throw it away world. And that's the model companies work on.
But I've found Apple products at least have longer useful lives even if they dont get all the updates or bugs fixed.

Because Apple isn't a startup is exactly the reason why it should not be excused for mistakes. I can accept a learning curve for new entrants, not for a company as successful as Apple. Apple did struggle early on but the company found its place well the iPod's success. I think that's when they discovered mobile was the "next big thing" and a move away from x86 would generate this. That's the roadmap that is still being followed today. Cook should not get credit for any of this as it was already planned by Jobs. Again, he is simply collecting dividends from Jobs' work. I think we agree on this.

Tech isn't a traditional business and I understand that but a new look to the OS doesn't mean much either; it's just marketing hype. A basic feature like moving icons without constrains is looong overdue - it took 15 years to implement this? That's just laziness and I blame Cook for not doing this sooner. That laziness leads to the downfall of even giants.

Qualcomm's latest mobile chips have not been as impressive as they claimed but the gap is closing. Eventually, even iPhone/Apple users will not be able to justify any price markups, assuming Google doesn't keep gutting themselves to show profitability to Wall Street. I think the latter may actually be the real reason why Apple stays on top - relatively poor execution at Google.

🤣🤣🤣
Thanks I needed a good laugh today.

I laugh every time I have to see the icons everyone on my iPhone and then cringe about using the iOS App Library. It is simply inferior to the Android App Drawer, both in the stock Pixel launcher and customized ones. Keeping just a few apps on your home screen and simply swiping up is objectively a cleaner look.

Google copies Apple all the time. Moving icons anywhere on the home screen and swiping up for all apps is the very least Apple can copy from Google. Apple's move is a step in the right direction.

Now if they could just software update the HDMI ports on MacBook pros to be capture cards…
That sounds simple but it's not.

There's a whole raft of reasons but mainly copy protection in all the various guises will stop it from happening.
Even paying licence fees to someone might not work.

We'll never know why it took 18 versions of iOS to allow icons anywhere on the screen.

But I'm glad it's finally happening!

😊
We do know why. Apple wants it so that when someone looks at your phone screen its instantly identifiable as an iPhone. You, like me, paid apple huge sums of money to be walking advertisements for them.

Allow users to change the number of icons per row. Iconoclasm allowed us to do this some 15 years ago. I don't understand why you can change the dock size on a Mac but you can't change the app icon size on the iPhone to allow for more apps per row. I understand it looks "cluttered" and some folks might "peck" the wrong app, but let the users worry about that. It would be glorious to have 35 apps on my home screen.
Not only you can change the size of the dock on the Mac, but you can also tweak the launchpad (grill of apps) on macOS in order to put more apps per row or column, by using the Terminal.

But then again, macOS is a product that still carries the soul of operating systems from the past century. They can be tweaked, personalized, and use Unix commands to do even more than what the UI allows you to. iOS on the other hand, was born on the current century, with a very different philosophy: being as closed and restricted as possible. Although Apple’s mobile operating system has been opening up progressively since iOS 12 (when a lot of new APIs were released), until the present day, it still has that soul of a closed operating system.

$3 trillion company took forever to allow you to put icons where you want on the screen… Still doesn’t work nearly as well the android one. So yes it’s worth mentioning that it’s lame and still lagging the competition.
Nice that they do now and then loosten up their control freak tendencies.

Funny how reading about these "new" features in iOS 18 as a longtime Android user only shows how behind iOS has been for years. It's great for life long iOS users who have never been exposed to these features but it's just funny how these so-called "new" features get spun in the press as some kind of revelation when Apple is finally onboard with what the rest of the industry has been doing for years.
I don’t think the press has been spinning it that way. Everyone knows Apple was behind in this regard. Most people are just being positive about it that Apple users have this ability now.

That’s the great thing about it you can keep it how it is now if that suits you. It is good for people to have the option to customize as they see fit though.
Or they can go android and stop demanding or whining iOS doesn’t work or look the same as an android.

I still a year later despise usb c and if I wasn’t in need of a new iPhone I would have stayed with the old one until the day I died probably lmao.

I despise the idea of RCS but thankfully that can be turned off.

It’s a shame I have to choose between a new iPhone and tolerating the android like iOS 18!features I don’t want and many don’t care about Or be stuck with my 15 pm.

Change will ALWAYS happen. So you have to choose if apple does enough of what you want out of a phone and operating system. There are literally on two out there that most people use. I’m very confused by your stance on apple using the industry standard for charging and connecting along with text messaging. There is a balance there and Apple is about as good as you will get. You can’t have everything you want.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with lightning. Nowadays I just use wireless charge because I refuse to the usb c port lol.

Also RCS isn’t necessary in a world where billions ppl use cross platform messaging apps.

I will say you are in the minority with this thinking. There is nothing wrong with updating your features to industry standards. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Hi! Is it possible in iOS 18 to select one of the built-in wallpapers for my Lock Screen and then pick a totally different wallpaper (not a photo!) for my Home Screen? If yes, how do I do this?

Thank for helping me out!

Its now possible to have blank spaces and rows. but. Why on earth do *other icons* STILL move when you move an icon?? At least give us a setting to toggle off auto arrange icons! Possibly being able to create adjustable blank spaces could help. Especially if blank spaces don’t move and icons adjusted around them. It’s now just even more unpredictable where icons will move to. Almost a fun game trying to figure out its logic 😂
Also would love to see the jiggle replaced by the gentle pulse when arranging control centre icons
