It looks like only automatic background recording. I cannot initiate a measurement manually.
Nor can I. When I launch the Blood Oxygen app on my S10 watch, I see "the Blood Oxygen app is no longer available," and that's after deleting and re-installing the app. The instructions on Apple's support site don't say anything about this, either. I don't understand why it shouldn't be possible to initiate a measurement on the watch or the iPhone. If that's the case, it's very disappointing.

This is an Apple fansite - so it's not surprising that some people are predisposed to taking Apple's side on any issue.

Yeah, for sure -- I'm used to that part, I just find it a bit unseemly what level Apple is allowed to go down to and still be vociferously defended.

One gets the sense that, for some fans, Apple could sell flat out stolen property and as long as the user "got what they wanted" it would be ok.

iP16 Pro and Watch 10 both updated without issue. Took a reading through the Blood Oxygen app on my watch. It worked fine. It uses the same animation as before. The reading shows up in the Health app under Respiratory. Pin it to the Summary section and it's easy to find.

So if the normal person did this before 1/24 and viewed the results, along with plenty of other metrics, on their watch..

...and now they always have to get their phone and open the Health app to go find it ..

You think they won't find that pretty different and perhaps fairly unappealing?

I wonder how the normal person would feel if there were told and it was explained "why" Apple has done all this. Sort of like telling them ... we are going to watch this movie, but just so you know, it was stolen and/or people with the rights to it were not remunerated as they should have been.

It is a shame that this all happened — and Apple did pay a price for their part in it; they likely lost many sales — but if their solution avoids the IP issue, can't this be seen as addressing the issue, and no longer in violation?

What are you hoping for? ...that Apple pay Massimo mega-bucks? They solved the issue in a creative way.

I find it hard to agree with you given that you're trying to justify it as an "inconvenience" to have to look at the phone for the results. Not really a huge issue. The data is available again. That's good.

I could... I started the measurement in the Blood Oxygen app on my watch, then got a notification on my iPhone to view the results. Using an S10 and iPhone 16.

Did you update both your watch and your phone?

...sooo...did you two already have it enabled or was it disabled when you purchased?...

So you're not seeing the same "app no longer available" on your watch? I wonder what you did differently? Maybe it's taking time for the app to be updated in different locations?

Masimo spent $200 million on lawyers and was just out maneuvered by Apple.

Glad to have o2 back!

They need to fire their CEO. ROI on that exercise was $0 now.
This why Apple pay the big bucks for the Best Patent Lawyers, the best engineers and poach hires the best talent from competing companies, to find a Workaround Solution and to save on costs.

I think the EU is going to sue Apple for not removing it from EU devices, and then sue them again for bringing it back.
Yup, if they can fine based on the profits companies are making in countries outside the region, why not also:
1. Penalize them for features not available in countries they’re basing their fines on, and
2. Penalize them for having a feature that some competitors don’t have and be forced to offer that feature for free? LOL

Although this is not the original implementation, I think it should be great. Most Apple Watch readings are done in the background, should a trend be identified it is brought to our attention when found. This will work fine for that, also the vitals tile will now be complete. Outside of first gaining a feature like this and trying it out, I personally did not do too many on demand readings on the watch, I just keep an eye on the vitals tile for outliers/trends. I'm glad it is back.
This workaround is apparently not going to make blood oxygen data available via the Vitals app. The data will only be available via the Health app on iPhone.

For models of Apple Watch purchased in the United States on or after January 18, 2024 with part numbers ending in LW/A, the Blood Oxygen data analysis is performed on iPhone, and results can be viewed in the Health app. Blood Oxygen data is not available in the Vitals app for these models.

Make sure you've updated your iPhone to iOS 18.6.1 and your Apple Watch to 11.6.1. Apparently if you are running iOS 26 beta you won't get it yet. Hopefully it will come in the next beta.

I also get the “Blood oxygen app is no longer available” message when trying to launch the app on my Ultra 2.

It never had blood oxygen activated, it is the black variant purchased last September, I haven’t tried reinstalling the app yet but other people said it didn’t do anything different.

And yes both phone and watch have been updated.

EDIT- Reinstalled app on watch, no change
Is it only supposed to take readings when sleeping?
