Today is the big update day on my home. I’m updating my remaining devices, two iPhone and two iPad, to iOS 18.6.1 (up from 18.1 and 18.3), even one “old” iPad 9th gen that has been on iPadOS 16.6.1 all this time. Poetically, it is being updated from 16.6.1 to 18.6.1.
I’ll follow the protocol that I usually do: 1) backup important stuff to an external storage, such as photos videos and audio recordings, 2) put device into DFU mode, 3) plug it into my clean, newly formatted Mac, 4) restore the device as new using the IPSW file I saved directly from Apple, 5) set up the new device with all the settings, parameters, apps and extensions I usually have, which are all written in a note… and 6) leave the device plugged to the power and connected to WiFi for several hours to calmly let it download and index any iCloud synced data.
This has worked wonders for me for several years, and I’ll keep doing it at least twice per year.
