1) beta two removes the volume bar bouncing animation.
2) beta whatever adds a toggle to turn this off completely, probably buried somewhere in the Accessibility menu because this is annoying AF.

Wish the volume gauge didn't jiggle along with it... seems annoying.
Yeah, I hope that Reduce Motion will get rid of this whole distracting effect that also makes it harder to discern the actual volume change (I really have no idea what they are smoking sometimes), but not holding my breath.

2. Aligning a UI element relative to a physical control that scales to different devices is no small feat. It's not a simple matter of "put it here." Not only does it have to adapt to the right position different viewports, the UI doesn't just receive signals from hardware around the coordinates in which they exist.
The button positions relative to the display are documented by Apple for each device with submillimeter precision, which translate readily into pixel positions, it's not rocket science.

1. It's SwiftUI, not CSS.

It was a joke. I’m not a swift dev, just a plain ol’ web/software developer.

I‘m pretty sure this is mainly intended for the 16 (Pro) phones with this rumored static buttons.
Curious if this will last for older iPhones in the final release.
Exactly my thought, this seems like something added for capacitive buttons to give visual feedback.

iOS 18 includes a small but interesting change for the buttons on the iPhone, adding more of a visual element when changing volume, activating the Action button, or locking the screen. When you press an iPhone button in iOS 18, the display bezel bulges outward slightly.

This feature is available for the volume buttons, Action button and the power button, and it will also likely be used for the Capture button that's rumored for the iPhone 16 models. With the iPhone 16, Apple is adding a dedicated button to make it easier to film and take photos in landscape orientation.

The button will be on the bottom right side of the iPhone, a good distance below the power button. Rumors suggest that the Capture button could be capacitive and flush with the side of the iPhone 16, so having the display pop out a bit when it's used would provide a useful visual indicator.

Jesus! get ride of spam Messages. I care zero about a button having a spasm.

I‘m a little disappointed that you can‘t or won‘t see that there is a reason for this design (even if you don‘t like it), don’t even answer my simple question and prefer to believe this is an oversight by all involved, but that‘s that, then.
I understand this design, and I'm mutually disappointed that you don't see and understand that it's a bad, inconsistent design.

Interesting to see this. Maybe this change is because the future buttons are expected to be capacitive

Hugely! Especially when I've only just bought my iPhone 15 in April and expected it to be supporting the latest innovations longer than 2 months.
That’s true. It’s a hard cut to only have the 15 Pro (and the newer ones) supported.

This interface and the lack of centering in this animation during the beta make me think that in the future, there won't just be solid state buttons. It looks like soon we might be able to define zones around the iPhone that can be assigned to different actions. I suspect that soon, we won't even see any hints of buttons at all.

Wow, that actually makes a ton of sense. Good point and observation.

Yes actually, on release builds of iPhone OS.

I am a heavy driver of Apple Maps and since one of the last OS updates a few months ago its been super buggy. It has dumped me at random destinations on completely wrong street names blocks away from the address its routing me to. It has declared I reached my destination 5 miles away while still showing my route and following my movement. When I disconnect my charging cable, the phone often desides to go back to where I started my trip, and replays GPS movement back to where I am while the phone locks during this odd behavior until it gets back to where I actually am.

Thats just Maps

I feel like there is something wrong with their background audio/streaming APIs. I've got several streaming apps including Sirus XM. A behavior I keep seeing and cursing Apple's name about is almost everything I do while background streaming causes it to pause. Pull down control center? 50% change of pausing. Ask Apple Maps for a route? Audio pauses 4 out of 5 times. Lock your phone? Another 50/50. Switching apps (not from the streaming app), also has a high probability of causing the audio to pause. These are clearly system functions causing the app to pause. Could it be the app? I suppose, though they aren't small companies either and should be able to fix their apps if its on their end.

Then there are endless problems with CarPlay reliability. Could it be the vehicle OEM? Sure maybe, but it seems to be across OEM so its probably also Apple.

And those are just the areas of the phone I use heavily and cause me non-stop pain.
Well. I do all those things too, and have none of those issues. So. Check with your car manufacturer maybe. Of course sometimes background audio will pause if the system is trying to control audio, that is also likely an issue with your car and not the OS. However. I feel for you. Hopefully all will sort eventually and you can live relatively bug free.
