I wish it had the ability to choose the Garage door it shows in Carplay as a Siri suggestion instead of it guessing. I have 2 garage doors, and it's a fun random option to which door it actually opens. Really irritating.
Yes please!

For what it's worth, I think that they need to make this work WITHOUT a phone connected and it should somehow be built into the cars natively if possible.
Please explain. It sounds like you are saying you want Apple CarPlay without an Apple device connected

Umm, yeah exactly. What are all those screens going to do without being connected to a phone? Wouldn't it be nice to have that built in? Or do you prefer to have the inconvenience of having your phone plugged in to use that? For short trips around town, I don't bother to plug in my phone, but maybe would want all those features.

I just hope something fixes this weird issue I keep getting where incoming call audio is routed to the phone every single time, despite the phone being connected via CarPlay.

Outgoing calls go through the car speakers as they should but with incoming calls, audio is routed to the phone every time. Anybody else having this issue by any chance?

There are some things I really don't understand with Apple. They're dedicating most of their efforts into developing their new CarPlay platform and getting automakers on board, without acknowledging the immediate needs of its current user base. They seem to overlook the fact that the majority of CarPlay users will still be navigating with the existing platform for the forseeable future. If they've recognized the importance of personalization for iPhone users, they should extend that understanding to CarPlay as well.

CarPlay, as of now, looks pretty outdated, and dedicating time to provide at least a few cosmetic upgrades shouldn't be too much to ask - for example:

1. Call handling: Instead of overtaking the entire screen, they should implement a less intrusive approach
2. Wallpaper customization: Offering a wider selection or even allowing users to upload their own would add a personal touch to the CarPlay experience.
3. Icon customization: With the recent introduction of icon customization in iOS 18, it's only logical to extend this functionality to CarPlay.
4. Weather integration: This information is essential for many drivers. Fully integrating weather apps would greatly enhance the utility of CarPlay
5. Improved layout/dashboard customization: Users should have the flexibility to arrange and customize the dashboard according to their preferences, tailoring it to their specific needs.

It's disappointing that Apple seems to have overlooked the current shortcomings of CarPlay. The lack of significant updates leaves users feeling neglected and the platform falling short of its potential. Apple's innovation and attention to detail should extend to every aspect of their products, including (the current) CarPlay.

That would be what wireless CarPlay is for. It wouldn't make any sense to "have CarPlay" but not have it run from the phone. That would just be the regular infotainment features that the car would come with.

CarPlay through a phone is far more preferred, since you typically upgrade your phone every 2 or 3 years, while cars only every 7, 10, or more. Nobody wants to have to buy a new car just to get new CarPlay features.

My wife's Honda is still having that problem where when you dictate a message, the first few words get cut off. In my car, an iOS update fixed this.

Wonder if Acura/Honda will bring this as a software upgrade? I have a Toyota, and I know they would want you to buy a new car. lol

All I want is making a phone call and it not taking over the whole page so my Waze goes and have to click it again. It should be a small banner
Right?

How in the FUNK is Apple getting away with this?

Like seriously how is invoking Sports Score Card via Siri a) needing a HUGE popup that will very likely lead to b) distracted driver attention away from what's ahead while driving, which c) can seriously lead to a real sports fan loosing their minds and craahing into an object or worse hitting somebody!!

Keep it a vocal action and vocal response like Am/FM radio. There is NO need to awaken thr company nor the user into life/death situations and a very lucrative class action lawsuit or worse single lawsuit claims.

Sometimes these great think tanks at apple get too carried away regardless of how sweet and nice somwthing they come up with is, it lacks common sense.

I was about to make a joke about that, too, so I’m glad someone beat me to the punch.

That said, I haven’t read Daring Fireball in years. Gruber was terminally online before it was a cool thing, and he was super tribalistic about politics even back in the early 2010s. I can only imagine how much more insufferable he’s gotten with how insufferable and tribalistic politics has become in the meanwhile. And, objectively speaking, Apple is probably less interesting than it had been (on account of their product categories generally being pretty mature, with the obvious exception of Vision Pro), making Gruber’s Apple comments less interesting as a result.
He’s also outspoken in his love for the NY Yankees 🥴

That too. Personally, I’ll root for anyone other than the Yankees. But also, I, and most of America’s sports fans, just don’t care all that much about baseball.

(Granted, I’m not much of a sports fan myself, the limit of my interest is that I’ll go see a game in person as part of social outings or maybe attend a game day party at a friend’s house. Also, given the forced choice of attending a Broadway show or a Yankees game, I’d probably choose the Yankees game. It’s more fun to play a pickup game than to watch pros playing it on TV, anyway.)

All I would want would be for CarPlay to play YouTube audio. Since I listen to a lot of that, I never use CarPlay, even though I have it wireless in my Honda CR-V. Actually, I find the car's Bluetooth and my phone deliver anything I want from my phone, so CarPlay kind of superfluous.
It already has been able to though

Unless you have YouTube Premium, you need to have the phone unlocked/actively in the YouTube app though or else it won't work

I’m still hoping for pinch to zoom and panning on the map. Pretty much impossible to look anywhere but the default view even at a typical stoplight. Please copy this feature from Android Auto.

Apple did not mention CarPlay during its WWDC keynote this week, but iOS 18 includes a handful of new features for the in-car software.

Overall, there is not a whole lot new for CarPlay on iOS 18, with changes seemingly limited to the Messages and Settings apps so far.

Below, we recap everything new for CarPlay on iOS 18.

New for CarPlay on iOS 18

1. Contact Photos in Messages App

iOS 18 adds contact photos next to names in the Messages app, making it easier to identify conversations at a glance.

The contact photos are also visible in Messages app notifications.

2. Silent Mode Settings

In the Settings app, you can now choose to have Silent mode on your iPhone automatically turn on or off when the device is connected to CarPlay.

5. Sound Recognition

Sound Recognition is expanding to CarPlay to provide notifications for driving-related sounds, such as car horns and sirens. This feature can be especially beneficial to drivers or passengers who are deaf or hard of hearing.

We did not see Sound Recognition in the CarPlay settings on iOS 18 beta 1.

Update — June 14: Sports Score Card via Siri

We found another feature after publishing: if you ask Siri for a sports score, it will now show a card on the CarPlay interface. This works for the NBA and NHL at a minimum.

Next-Generation CarPlay

Apple shared some updated next-generation CarPlay images during WWDC 2024, revealing new Vehicle, Media, and Climate apps on the screen for the first time.

Next-generation CarPlay will be highly customizable, allowing automakers to tailor the design of the system to uniquely match their vehicles. Apple revealed a variety of different design options and layouts that will be available to automakers.

Apple's website continues to say that the first vehicles with next-generation CarPlay will arrive in 2024, but it has yet to provide a more specific timeframe, and it did not provide any timing-related updates in its WWDC coding sessions. Aston Martin and Porsche previewed next-generation CarPlay vehicle designs late last year.

Maybe this was already mentioned, but at least in my car, Siri/Carplay can now read texts / Line / WhatsApp / etc. in more than one language (English and Japanese in my case). Which is pretty awesome. This might not be exclusive to iOS 18, but it just started happening for me.
