So, this is helpful. But what I would really like with an iPad M4 and a 15 ProMax is the simple ability to connect the 2 devices via a Thunderbolt/USB-C cable and have them be able to access the file systems on either devices - for BIG transfers - like 2GB movie raw files and stuff like that - rather than (a) tying to AirDrop them, (b) putting them through iCloud or © copying them to an external SSD on the phone and reading them back from the SSD on the iPad.

You can AirDrop using a wired connection between an iPhone and iPad (iOS 17 and iPadOS 17)

Yes, you can.

This features is long overdue and glad to see it finally arriving,

If it wasn’t because I know you for quite a long time here in MR, I’d have said that it was a click bait message from the video author to make us see the video.

No, you still cannot eject an external drive before hot-unplugging it. The format option is very welcome, but I’ve been on the situation where the SSD doesn’t stop blinking (even after 15 minutes of my iPad locked) and had to hot-unplug it while it was still reading/writing on it.

So, yeah, the eject button would be quite useful to avoid the risk of corrupting an external drive that could have important data.

PS: congrats on your finding, Kaleb. Wishing to see you again on the forums once your suspension on MR is over!

I do not think that there was ever any “data corruption” problem I had. Just killed all apps using the drive except Files and unplugged cable with my hand.

If this happens, big thumbs up from me.
As usual, lets wait and see actual implementation.
I have little expectation.
I just wish this will happen.
Apple should allow us, users to use our devices how we want to.
No format option is one of those silly restrictions.

My Bad. I posted the video late last night and going by memory, I thought it had mentioned ejection.

Directly copying files from Files app Download folder to PC by connecting PC/MAC via USB cable when?
This is such a basic feature but Apple is too arrogant to let regular users have this... forget about power users.

Who Knew…I honestly didn’t know this was possible - I mean, how intuitive …. AirDrop using a “Wired Connection”. At first I thought you were teasing - but it truly does work - but only iPhone/iPad - doesn’t come up as an option when the iPhone is plugged into the MacBook.

All that being said, though….there is still a fundamental problem with this. Let’s say I have captured gigs of videos with the new Final Cut Pro Camera app - and now I want to transfer them from the iPhone to the iPad for some editing….using AirDrop copies them into the Photos folder on the iPad and then they begin to sync to all the other devices - which is what I don’t want with gigs of files. I just want to be able to put them where I want and later I will decide what/if gets to sync all over the planet. That is still the fundamental flaw with AirDrop - for known file types and apps it syncs to the app/folder on the target depending upon the file type and there’s no (easy) way to override it…..what you can do, before the sync’ng cuts in, is compress them to a .zip, delete the original files and at least the .zip will go to downloads on the target as opposed to the Photos folder. The other alternative is to plug in an external drive like a Samsung T7 SSD and transfer them to that; and from that to the iPad. If you have a LOT of video, it’s not a bad option because on M-series devices the transfers do go in the order to 600MB/s-which is much faster than some of the other options even considering you have to do an up and down.

Some might find this helpful with Seagate drives.

Eject

Unlike macOS and Windows, iPadOS and iOS do not require a “safe” ejection of a storage device. Simply disconnect the storage device once the actions are complete. Make certain that no transfer operations are active before disconnecting. The best practice is to remove the drive while the iPad or iPhone clearly shows that actions are complete.

Does this mean apps will get access to the raw filesystem of a drive? Or is this purely a feature of the Files app?

You can accomplish the same thing albeit wirelessly with Universal Control, you can drag and drop files between an iPad and a Mac using the Mac’s mouse and keyboard.
