How hideous! That is Microsoft-pioneered flat design. The fact that Tim Cook prefers that instead of Apple-pioneered skeuomorphic design shows how he deeply lacks taste and an understanding of user-friendliness. Such bland Microsoft-inspired flat design would've never happened if Scott Forstall was still in charge of iOS.
This new design is literally more colorful and vibrant than it has been since iOS 7.

It is flat design. Flat design is the most user-unfriendly design because it removes visual cues. It is also two-dimensional. Those are objective facts. As for subjective aspects, flat design removes the fun and playfulness. It's just business, like an old IBM PC running Microsoft's DOS Shell.

How would a 3D design help in a calendar? I would argue that colors and icons that are added here do add visual cues and playfulness.

Just compare the iOS 6 Calendar app to the iOS 18 app to see how iOS 6's Apple-pioneered skeuomorphic design makes things more user-friendly and intuitive than iOS 18's Microsoft-pioneered flat design. The iOS 18 Calendar app looks as bland as Google's flat design calendar app. No surprise there considering that Tim Cook is a bland individual.

I use older iOS devices on a regular basis. I like the older designs too, but I don't think the calendar looking the way it is now (again, with more color and icons than it had before) is worse than what we used to have necessarily.

Am I missing something? We used to be able to view a list of events and scroll through them as a continuous list. Where did that functionality go? That was the only way I viewed my calendar.

Click on the bad-and-inconsistent two-rectangle thing to the left of the search icon and select "List".
That only shows the list by day rather than the ability to scroll through a week or the next couple of days as it used to allow.

Update: if you select, “stacked” “compact” or “details” for the calendar view, then select a specific day you get a, “list” and the same infinite scroll in what appears to be a day view. That icon also then changes to the, “single day” “multi day” or “list” options.

Strangely the only “calendar” view which doesn’t have the scrolling, “list” is titled “list”. Hahahaha! 😂🤣😂

Am I the only one who thinks this is a stupid idea? Calendars are for calendar events. Not for reminders. The Reminders app is for Reminders, which is why it's called Reminders. Sometimes I think they do this because they're out of original ideas. I have no interest in having my reminders in my calendars app. You don't need an app that does everything. I like having them separate. Thanks for letting me vent. Now I think I'll send an email to Apple about this.

I remember the olden days (Jaguar, Panther?) when Reminders was in Calendar. Think it was called either tasks or todo. 512pixles im sure has some screenshots that would verify. So it isnt so much a new idea as much as it is coming back around 16–18 years later.

For most, they might see benefit in it. But I had a friend tell me to read Allen’s GTD book. Because of that, I now keep them separate. If it is something to do it goes in Things 3. If it is a place to be at a specific time, it goes on calendar.

For someone with an appointment heavy but tasks light life, I think the option would work. But for someone who is tasks heavy and appointment light it is too overwhelming. In my field (ministry/pastor) I don’t HAVE to be at many places during the week but I do HAVE to get quite a bit done by the end of each week. So the Things 3 option to show calendar events in the today view and the upcoming view, for me, is perfect.

But I agree with your productivity guidelines. 5 years ago I wouldn’t have a clue what you meant. But after being a stressed out ball of nerves for way too long in the late 2010s, I now understand.
