With iOS 18, Apple is adding a new option that will let you pause a video in the middle of a recording, providing an option for capturing multiple shots in a single video rather than having to start and stop new videos each time.

When you start a video in iOS 18, you'll see a new pause button on the left side. Pressing it pauses the video, and pressing the button again unpauses. You can still stop a video at any time using the middle stop button.

Apple added the new video pausing feature in the iOS 18 release candidate that was provided to developers and public beta testers today.

It's likely that pausing and recording video will be a feature of the Camera Control button that's included on all of the iPhone 16 models.

iOS 18 is set to be released on Monday, September 16, while the iPhone 16 models will launch on Friday, September 20.

It's a matter of ability to pause video recording at the cost of unusable Photos app or stay on iOS 17.x

It’s actually probably easier to do it this way than to combine separate clips, something I’m not sure is even possible on iPhone. Problem is you need the foresight to take your “separate” clips together in the first place.

Personally, for editing, I prefer separate clips. But for people not into video editing and just need to make simple videos of their kids or an event, a pause button will be nice and welcomed.

I couldn't wait and jumped on the RC. It's far more stable than any other iOS at release has been in a long time. I've actually noticed more fixed bugs than introduced ones. Haven't even found any bugs except that the new screen customization could use a bit more polish.

All the little improvements like this make it worth a day one upgrade in my opinion. This is the exact opposite of how I felt about iOS 16. 17 wasn't great at first either.

I'd rather have separate clips for editing purposes too. Easier than going in and figuring out multiple cuts in a single clip. Still glad to see the feature added though, more options are better and I'm sure some people will find a use for it.

Such feature! Very pause!

You can using iMovie: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102667
iMovie unfortunately crops vertical videos into a horizontal widescreen format, and vertical video is basically the entire of what people use for sharing on social media these days. There really should be a much simpler way of doing something as basic as joining clips. But an updated/more capable iMovie would be nice too

Finally!

Works on my iPhone 12 Pro Max too. Glad they didn't limit it only to the more recent iPhones.

camera updates this year were good, but telephoto needs 48 MP
I'm likely going to stick with my 12 Pro Max until the 17 Pro Max comes out, precisely for this reason.

It is possible, it’s called iMovie or any other video editing app on iPhone.

This feature brings back memories, this is how we used to record video back in the day when we used tape. (and hell, on film before that!) You would record, then pause, then record more, and so on.

When you play it back later, it would just be everything you recorded in one big series of cuts.

Hello everyone, on the iPhone 15 pro there is also the option, when starting a video recording, so it is not an exclusive feature of the iPhone 16.
