That's quite neat (although of course Android has had it for years...), but as I understand it is still not possible to switch between the fron and back cameras during recording?

My mum's S3 in 2013 could pause video.

Is it bad that this lock screen is nostalgic :,(

Let's say this feature—switching between cameras while recording is so essential and most people do need it. Then how to deal with different optical qualities, like field of view, aspect ratio, resolution, and colour profile. It is the main reason we don't have this feature, and we probably won't have it in the future. Yes, you can hack something together which will work technically but will produce mediocre quality. The video will suffer from upscaling, time lag during switching and changing colour profile. Maybe most people won't notice lesser quality, but it doesn't mean it's the right thing to compromise like this.

In addition, I use wonderful apps like Kino and Halide Camera and it makes sense for Apple apps to have a limited set of features. There's always something a stock app won't do. I think Apple is doing well striking a balance giving enough features for most use cases and not over-complicating interface. What is the point of making the interface more cluttered if most of the users won't use this feature? If we follow this slippery slope we end up copying every feature all the third-party apps have into iOS. And then what is the point of running the App Store?

I don't even think that the ability to pause video during recording is going to be adopted by a significant amount. I know I will use it. But I've been shooting videos as a hobby since high school and I've been thinking about this feature a lot. I am glad they added it. However, we have to understand that it comes at the cost of increasing interface complexity. Maybe it should be hidden by default and can be activated (added) from the Camera settings.

iOS 18 has added so many little “welcome to 2024” features (pause video recording, search contacts in dialer, scheduled message send) and I love it! I can’t believe they’ve taken so long to add some of these things but I’m glad they are finally here. 🙂

With iOS 18, Apple is adding a new option that will let you pause a video in the middle of a recording, providing an option for capturing multiple shots in a single video rather than having to start and stop new videos each time.

When you start a video in iOS 18, you'll see a new pause button on the left side. Pressing it pauses the video, and pressing the button again unpauses. You can still stop a video at any time using the middle stop button.

Apple added the new video pausing feature in the iOS 18 release candidate that was provided to developers and public beta testers today.

It's likely that pausing and recording video will be a feature of the Camera Control button that's included on all of the iPhone 16 models.

iOS 18 is set to be released on Monday, September 16, while the iPhone 16 models will launch on Friday, September 20.

Well over due, I'm sick and tired of using a 3rd party app

camera updates this year were good, but telephoto needs 48 MP
Agreed on the 5x, the upgrades aren't as good as the spin, the aperture on the UW is the same at 2.2, which means low light will be no where as good as the main camera

Would love to know if the hearing protection will be good enough to give protection at a shooting range, I’m in the uk military reserve & have been looking for a good set of in ear electronic ear defenders, have apple just solved my search ?

I have not tried it, nor heard much about it, is the photos app truly bad?
Not really, it's just that the app has been turned upside down and you have to get used to it again, which takes about 5 min. People commenting negatively, either haven't tried it, or are reluctant to get used to something new

That's great. Not even being sarcastic but the 16 feels like its the content creators edition. Wish there was more than just TikTok and Instagram for the content to live. I didn't use Vine back in the day but did enjoy the compilations and talent of regular everyday people.

Well, I am doing this all the time while recording on my other device and I am not the only one doing so. As far as I remember this feature is actually so popular that some of the social media apps even added it to their camera apps.

Unless you are using your iPhone for some professional shooting or viewing your recorded content on a really big screen, all of the disadvantages you mentioned, much as valid they are, are also not important at all.

Kinda surprise Apple didn't limit it to the 16 just for stupid reasons

why it took so long Tim? Are you really so busy? My 1990 camcorder has that functionality! And Android has had that since inception.

I disagree. Those of us who don't like it have tried it. It does take getting used to. My problem is where the Camera Roll meets the first section. It's not a clean or smooth behavior there. Kind of bumpy. Other than that, I'm ok with it. I do like we can hide sections we don't use.

Yes... Being responsible for 160,000 employees worldwide, 1 billion active Apple customers, and manufacturing 600,000 iPhones everyday of the year, making sure Apple is incredibly well run so mass layoffs don't need to occur (unlike most other tech companies in Silicon Valley), and being involved with dozens of major company decisions every day of the week, TC is extraordinarily busy. Most people here have no idea what a CEO of a company Apple's size does.

He likely doesn't get involved with such minor decisions. More likely it was an Apple systems engineer, or project manager, who received a thoughtful letter from an Apple customer who took the time and requested it. They actually read them.

Next time try harder when you're feeling the need to slam Cook.

I mean he's the CEO of one of the biggest software and hardware companies in the world with over 150K employees, over 3 trillion in market cap, millions of shareholders to answer to...... So yeah I think he is "really so busy"

haha, it's not a big deal. This app below can do it better.

It does seem odd it's taken Apple so long to implement this. But they have been working on many many things, and have a really great product in the iPhone. They have their reasons, and I'm not complaining. It's finally there, and works great.
