What password manager is that? Most have an export function. And the Passwords app has an import function (macOS).
How can I get the passwords app on my Macbook Pro? It's from 2017 and cant get Sequoia. Is the passwords app for MacOS only compatible with Sequoia?

There’s no way I am putting my financial accounts behind FaceID. So no matter what Apple does with their app, I will keep some passwords in Apple app for convenience, and others in Bitwarden for security. I wish there was a way to set access level per password category
Intriguing. And, I also don't understand.

Is the implication that you trust Bitwarden more than you do Apple?

I don't know fully for sure, but I think it is for Sequoia and up.

I also run a 2017 MBP which can only be updated to Ventura. While there was a dot release update for Ventura after iOS 18 came out, I don't see a new password manager for it and I didn't expect to.

I guess I’ll wait for those import tools.
Same. I'll give this a try, but 1Password still feels superior and with native support in iOS and MacOS. I'm not sure what the benefits would be to me except for saving $4 a month. But I'll try it out and see if I can drop a subscription.

I been going through my Apple password manager, just delete all old ones (comparing from my main password manager) and duplicate ones. Next I need rename make it clear what it is. Then I leave it alone to see how it goes etc before I add more passwords from my main password manager into this.

EDIT: I am bit of neat freak cos I like things neat and in order. When open it first time I was like oooooooohhhh noooooooooo what total mess this is! 🤣😅

Correct, all your passwords are then unlocked with a device passcode. No option for a custom passcode like in the Notes app. In other words, your Notes are better protected than your Passwords. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Haha. I'm sure they'll fix this sooner than later but this seems like about as insane an oversight as could be possible for a company that prides itself on security features.

I'm with you, there. I pruned and merged quite a few passwords from keychain using the Passwords app. Labelled them neatly. A fair number linked to dead websites, so I deleted those.

How did you merge them? I did tried to see but couldn't so delete instead copies instead of merge.

When you edit a particular record, you can click on its "Website" field. From there, you can add and remove website URLs that are linked to the login.

Does it keep a history of passwords? In the example given, if you change a password for a website in the Password app, then go to the website to update your password, you need the old password.

Over the past few days, I tried subscribing to a website subscription multiple times. The website was broken and I didn't get as far as the payment screen. Eventually I did manage to subscribe. Naming no names, but let's say it was blahblahblah.com

Now when I go into Passwords and search for blahblahblah.com, it shows the record in the search results, and beneath that it says "4 recently generated passwords matching blahblahblah". Clicking that shows a dialog box saying

Generated Passwords
Strong passwords that your device creates are kept here for 30 days. Save them to make them available for AutoFill on all your devices.

Each of the entries shows when it was created and has a Delete and Save Password button.

What if someone spikes your drink and unlocks your phone? Can’t do that with a long pass phrase.

Or this

If cops can do it, criminals can do it just as easily.

Yes, they can also force you to reveal your password at gunpoint. But that takes far more time, requires a secluded location, while snatching a phone and using FaceID takes mere seconds.

You’re walking around with many tens of thousands of dollars - or more - right there in your pocket. Just think about that…

If a thief has your iPhone, and has also got your iCloud password, then it's game over already. But go on then, spit it out what your amazing free solution is ;)
With my solution that doesn’t happen😂. That also happens with me. Read it again and you will understand.

The browser extension is severely limited for anything that is not Safari on a Mac. So, for now, I will be keeping Bitwarden.

I see. So you mean that you don't like that the only way to unlock Passwords is FaceID and you prefer that it either also uses a long password or it allows you to disable FaceID. Got it. That's a legitimate concern.

I haven't played around with Passwords yet. I currently use 1Password 7 and will for a while until it really stops working with subsequent operating system updates.

I don't like the idea that ALL of my passwords are behind FaceID, which is a lot easier to get through.

Ideally, I want to have groups of passwords and have a user setting to allow some groups open via FaceID and others via password.

Lacking that, I have to separate the passwords between two unrelated and unconnected password managers.

Passwords is fine. Not perfect, but good enough for most people. It's the "all or nothing" approach to FaceID that I have an issue with.

Just a quick note, while I need Bit Warden for self-hosting on my server for the family vaults (and it’s amazing at that), I HIGHLY recommend my former password vault choice- Minimal password manager. Fantastic developer. So responsive. Gorgeous and minimal app.

Does 1Password 7 still work fine on macOS Sequoia and iOS 18? I'm planning to export my 1Password 7 data on macOS Sequoia and import it to the new Passwords app.

It worked long enough for me to make the transition to the Passwords app. In my case, most of my passwords were already in KeyChain, so it didn't merit an export/import process.

Where is the generator then?

Click + to open New Password
Click the Password field

macOS:
Choose from "Strong Password" or "Without Special Characters" to generate a new password.

iOS:
Click the "Strong Password Suggestion" to generate a new password.

New password generator seem be less option than keychain on Mac. I might be remembering wrong but I thought keychain password generator can change length, with and without symbols. 🤔

I completely agree with this one.

Recently I got so utterly hammered on cocktails in Malta that I was unconscious. A friend managed to unlock my phone with FaceID and work out where I was staying in AirBnB and order a Bolt taxi back to it on my phone without my interaction or attention.

I literally just realised reading your post that he had access to everything that I have as does anyone else who can unlock my phone. For example if I've been clonked on the head or otherwise incapacitated. That attack surface area is completely untenable.

I am seriously considering getting a Pixel 7A and chucking GrapheneOS on it and using it as a very minimal surface area (just for travel) device and dumping my iPhone entirely.

Note I have everything in a keepass database as well entirely offline.
