Apple's really copied 10-year-old Android features in the past few releases - I mean customizable home screens, a very poorly done App drawer - widgets - and now this?
Imagine if they copied the ability to start pulling down from the top while in a full-screen app (like games, streaming video) and the first peek immediately gets you the clock and battery and whatever else is in your notification bar (temperature, for example) without having to pull far. Wanting to see those is 95% of why I pull down on my iPad, and it irritates me every time.

Yet you still can’t disable that infuriating swipe-left-for-camera gesture that I never intentionally use and is always getting in the way when I try to clear notifications.
This, I don't care how many times they refine shortcuts. Almost everytime I try to use the flashlight from the home screen it invariably shuts off and goes to the camera app. Stupid forced gesture.

Removing the flashlight could be useful. If you don't use a case then that button is often activated by accident and you end up walking around with it on.

Amen to that! I hate this feature, because I often trigger the camera accidentally. Specially with the ‘lift to turn screen on’ feature.

This has been on my personal list along with a way to make changing photo modes harder. Too often I touch the mode text and then I’m on something I don’t want.

Neat. Now bring the option for slide to unlock back. And I and many others who love nostalgia, will be happy for a while.

Also this is not something to be ‘proud’ of. It just show’s how terrible Apple is these days.

cool. Can we get multiple user profiles? Would be nice to have completely separate user spaces. Thank you.

Interesting... I've never had a problem with apps accidentally turning on. Probably because it takes a deliberate press on the buttons. An accidental swipe or brush against the buttons will do nothing.

"Is there an option to have nothing selected for either spot?"

Yes, that's covered in the story.
Right, everyone else is just making it up because it’s inconceivable that a piece of flesh could be touching the buttons for more than 500 ms.

Speaking for everyone else? Really.

If *you* are having a problem with that, simply turn the buttons off and find happiness.

In iOS 18, currently in beta, Apple is allowing iPhone users to replace the flashlight and camera buttons on the Lock Screen with something more useful, or to make them disappear entirely.

The dedicated flashlight and camera shortcuts you see at the bottom of your iPhone's Lock Screen were introduced in their current form with the release of iOS 11 alongside the iPhone X in 2018, and the two icons have since been a staple, non-customizable feature.

But that's all set to change this September with the launch of iOS 18. The Lock Screen buttons on your iPhone can now be replaced with any Control Center option. This includes system features like Dark Mode, Airplane Mode, Accessibility options, Calculator, and Translate, as well as Shortcuts – making the functional possibilities endless.
The change in iOS 18 is part of a broader Control Center redesign, significantly expanding the quick access potential from the Lock Screen. Apple has also opened up this functionality to third-party apps, allowing their icons to be added to the Control Center and, by extension, the Lock Screen buttons.

To maintain user privacy and data security, certain options may require Face ID or Touch ID authentication before granting access from the Lock Screen. This ensures that sensitive information remains protected even with this increased accessibility.

The following steps explain how to switch up your Lock Screen buttons in iOS 18:
  1. Press and hold on the Lock Screen after authenticating.
  2. Tap Customize.
  3. Tap Lock Screen.
  4. From there, tap the "-" icon to remove apps that are assigned to those buttons. The Flashlight and Camera apps are the default, so they will need to be removed.

Next, tap the "+" button and choose a new control to add from the scrolling menu of options.
  5. Repeat for the second Lock Screen button if desired.
Tap Done in the top-right corner to finish.

Don't forget that if you replace the camera button or remove it completely, you can still easily access the Camera app from the Lock Screen by swiping left across the screen.

Can we set it to have a camera button on the left and on the right? One preset to take photos, the other to video? Or one going directly to panorama photo, the other to portrait?? Built by Apple with a little bit of Human Intelligence in coding … and using Apple Intelligence & Machine Learning to track my 2 most preferred shooting modes and even pre-setting the two buttons accordingly? Yes? WI … Welcome Intelligence.

How can I turn off the haptic feedback of these buttons on the Lock Screen? I don't care to hav them feel like real buttons. I just want to tap them not press them.

Try pulling it out of your pants pocket by grabbing the lower end— happens all the time. Is that a flashlight in your pocket or are you happy to see me? 😄

I have my two lock screen buttons activate the flashlight and camera. They're very handy and use them both often.

you can just swiped left on the lock screen to activate the camera. What do you need it as a button for?

Customizing the lock screen? What is this Android?

Improving every facet of the phone is the name of the game.

Who invented it first is an argument for the high schoolers among us.

The adults here just want a better phone.

I need to begin thinking about which two new apps I want to be accidentally turning on/opening.

Is there an option to have nothing selected for either spot? [EDIT: found it above the photo. great!]
Yes. Use old iPhone with home button and you got no icons.
So nobody is satisfied. You do not want any and we want both back!

I'll wait for 3rd party but tbh Flash is something I always use daily so only the camera will be replaced for me.
