Nice. So we get “changes” that were either forced by the EU or how Apple sees how they are behind in AI. Where’s the originality? I despise how Android has become more innovative that iOS, but that is now a sad truth. Folding phones, full screen phones without a notch and under display cameras and fingerprint readers, etc. Yet, the next iPhone ADDS A BUTTON?? A button to take pictures?? Does anyone remember how Apple made the fingerprint sensor popular?

Well, we do need a button, it's missing.

A home button. With a fingerprint sensor on it. In a bezel.

They need to standardize the model designations and the original iPhoneOS/iPadOS. E.g., the iPhone 18 is introduced with iPhoneOS 18, iPad 18 is introduced with iPadOS 18, etc.

Just fix tethering. 20 times a day, I have to plod into settings to reconnect my iPad to my iPhone. Just give me an “auto-join selected WiFi network” option, rather than endless lists of networks I do not want to join or cannot join without a PW.

No amount of effort or money poured into Siri will ever improve it. It’s straight trash in every way. I’m still shocked how in 2024 I can do a voice to text and it gets 12% of what I said right. Trillion dollar company….
Did you ignore the part about Apple basically giving Siri a brain transplant with an LLM AI? That is going to make it a very different tool.

I keep hearing about the possible redesign and having flashbacks to iOS 7's early days and shuddering... Let's hope whatever they do, it's done elegantly and smoothly.

You want them to go from the iPhone 15 to iPhone 18? And the iPad (Pro, Mini, Air) skipping to 18 as well? What about the mid-year model updates? Not everything comes out at the same time. How is that not confusing?

I mean, this is obviously wrong. Siri can be made to work better than any existing similar assistant. But it takes a will and a vision to do that. The question is whether Apple currently has either one.

I find Siri very accurate as far as text-to-speech goes. Certainly no worse than Google's and Amazon's speech recognition tech, and far better than most others I've used. The real issue issue is Siri's limited ability to actually comprehend and do something useful with your commands. Hopefully the new AI stuff will improve that.

I’m really hyped about iOS 18, very curious about their approach to AI, but also about the so called “redesign”. Hopefully they will put effort into bug fixes and efficiency, but being a big release, it’s not likely. It gives me iOS 11 or 13 vibes. We’ll see.

I wonder if they will add any significant UI feature to iPadOS 18

If Craig Federighi is being strategic about his potential future advancement I’d expect him to deliver a major win with this release. Apple needs a win badly right now and iOS is a prime candidate for major positive advancements and bug fixes.

Siri needs to be both smarter about the outside world (facts, weather, current events) and smarter about the world inside the phone. If you could, for example, prompt Siri to make a shortcut or a HomeKit automation by just describing what you want it to do? That would be very good. A much more intelligent Siri that has control of more of your phone’s functions would be able to make the device a lot more productive for many people. Many features go unused that Siri could use instead to either jump to a desired result or instruct the phone user in how to access and use a features. Stuff like that is what Siri needs do be able to do.

Count me out of wanting that. :)
VisionOS icons are circular because they are meant to be seen from multiple angles compared to a iPhone or a Mac where you usually look at them from the front view.
See https://www.rudrank.com/vision-os-fundamentals-creating-app-icon/

This doesn’t really make sense IMHO. A circle gets distorted the same as a rounded rectangle when you look at it from an angle, probably even more so (perceptually).

The visionOS icons are *layered*. Now this makes more sense ‚ but could also be achieved with rounded rects.

Compared to ChatGPT-4, Siri = Stinking garbage.

RCS support at last, this will make it possible to move away from todays unsafe and poor SMS experience to something better. Especially welcome for businesses that might use a mix of Android and iPhone and need to use some sort of messaging system such as SMS.

I just hope they don't make it even worse. 7 was horrific.

When I power up an old iPhone today it's still astonishing how incredible it looks compared to the awful flatness.

It was nearly perfect, then Apple ruined it.
Skeuomorphism comeback you say. I would love to see how it works in 2024 tbh but Apple hates theming so 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️

yeah, a real shame. iOS became so buggy in general. The other day I switched the sound from iPhone to HomePod and the music app got confused, it paused the ui as if the music stopped playing while it was actually playing through HomePod. When I tried to resume the song Apple Music just crashed. HomePod always stops playing stuff by itself and If you switch HomePod to AirPods on macOS you can no longer use HomePod after that unless you restart HomePod or the wifi. And it's a known issue since like 2019, it's all over apple forums and reddit. Besides that my AirPods never work properly, no matter how many times I exchanged them. And yes, Siri is really a joke, it's so bad even by 2010 standards. I wonder if Apple even have any quality control at all, because it looks like they don't. Glad they stopped the Apple Car project, cause it would probably have 99% crash rate with the modern Apple that has 0 quality control. They don't even listen to beta testers (sometimes they do fix bugs that were filed 4-5 years ago though)
