Edit: dido what @dannyyankou said about what I was meaning. Also, note that I am not saying that it’s impossible that these features would be delayed into iOS 19, I’m saying that the statement provided by the Apple spokesperson in question does not explicitly state as much. So it’s very possible that when he said that, he was meaning a few months from now. We simply don’t know, and I don’t think we have enough info here to stake claims on, especially considering this is just what one Apple spokesperson said, not an official announcement from Apple. If Apple were planning to delay these features into an iOS 19 release, one would think they would say as much in an official announcement.
Within most of that year we’ll still be on iOS 18, iOS 19 will only drop near the end of the year, and we’re near the beginning. So it’s still very possible they will rollout in iOS 18.
While I understand why some people are disappointed, I think there are very good reasons for this (not excuses, but reasons). These updates are quite ambitious, and require a lot of work. They seem to possibly have run into unforeseen snags that setback their work on these features. Perhaps security issues arose that weren’t initially a problem. Who knows, but Apple has had their hands quite full with major security fixes they had to roll out in 18.3. And they’ve also had to do a bunch of extra work to satisfy the stupid regulations in places like the EU. Sometimes things come up and set back development. It seems to be last-minute hurdles they’re running into while nearing a working system. It would be analogous to a factory burning down right before a product goes into production, pushing back the production release window. It’s not like it’s premeditated or something. Things can just happen.
Also, we don’t even know yet if these features have actually been delayed to iOS 19. Nothing in that statement from that Apple spokesperson says as much. For all we know, the features could come in iOS 18.5, 18.6, 18.7, etc. We just don’t know yet. So saying there’s “no excuse” for something that hasn’t happened yet doesn’t make much sense to me… For all we know, these features still stand a good chance of rolling out in iOS 18, nothing from Apple has stated otherwise yet…
That other article (which wasn’t the one I was talking about) is entirely speculation. We have no concrete information stating these features are delayed to iOS 19, that is just how some are choosing to interpret a very vague statement that includes more months of possible iOS 18 updates it could land in than iOS 19 ones…
If Apple wants these features to make it to iOS 18 before iOS 19, they have to be at least in beta testing in the next 3 months. Because iOS 19 will be in beta testing by that point. And just from an engineering perspective, it wouldn’t make much sense testing these features in 2 versions of software at the same time if they’ve been running into issues.
The betas for iOS 19 won’t be finalized though until likely sometime in September. So they could just incorporate the features in a later beta when they incorporate them into a corresponding 18 update. As to testing them in two versions at the same time, they wouldn’t have to, they could test them in an 18 update first, and then incorporate the finalized feature into the 19 beta. For example, they could test these features and release them in iOS 18.6, and then add them into the next beta for iOS 19 after 18.6 is finished. I believe Apple has done similar when they’ve added new minor features and changes in later updates of a prior iOS version while they’re completing betas for the next version.

It seems Apple, in an attempt to remain relevant in the AI discussion, got ahead of their skis quite a bit. As others have said, their advertising of their AI with the current devices may lead them open to class action harassment.
Their only saving grace is the integration of Siri within the OS. Most of us are deep into the Apple universe and once Siri is updated, and assuming it works as they say, all will be forgiven.

One thing that's very important for this new Siri to work properly when it's actually released is to make all of these new API's available to developers so they can get their apps to work with it. Things won't "just work" out of the box. And Apple always alpha tests the next gen OS before anyone else gets their hands on it, and if they're postponing these features, that most likely means they're having issues integrating with their own core apps. And that doesn't sound good at all! But then pushing it off to a new OS, iOS 19, means a refresh of new top level API's that may just make a lot of this easier on developers going forward. And then maybe there's still a way to back port some part of these things to 18.5 or even 18.6.. Who knows. It's clear that whatever happens with iOS 18 in general, we'll probably start seeing more performance improvements.
I am glad I didn't go out and get the iPhone 16 Pro Max, though. Seeing some of the commercials of Apple Intelligence early on really had me with the FOMO. I'd be pretty pissed if I bought one specifically for what they said the iPhone could do in the commercials.

I do wonder what, if any, effect (affect?) all this will have on future hardware. With thin iPhone, foldable iPhone etc. coming.
I guess they are pretty much forced to make it compatible with current hardware after their current marketing, so I guess they can’t solve issues with better hardware, I’m thinking this is why they are struggling. Their solution has to be software based and work on current generation of hardware. The capabilities they have already advertised may be a major challenge with current hardware.

I think there’s just no way they would come out with this announcement if it were going to be on iOS 18. It would make zero sense. We will get an update on things at wwdc, if I were a betting man.
Keep in mind though, this isn’t an official announcement from Apple, it’s just remarks from one Apple Spokesperson in an interview. And he didn’t say that it would be delayed into iOS 19. He merely said they still anticipated dropping the features within the next year. While iOS 19 could be a possibility, so could iOS 18, and technically there will be more time with iOS 18 updates in that time span then there will be for iOS 19, so since iOS 18 makes up the majority of that time window, and iOS 19 only constitutes the very end part, I think there’s technically statistically some higher chance it could come in a later 18 update over a 19 update. We just don’t have hard evidence to make a definitive claim that it will be delayed into iOS 19. And that’s the main thing I’m trying to say. I think it’s possible the features could be delayed to iOS 19, but there’s also the possibility they’re just delayed into a later iOS 18 update like 18.5 or 18.6. So since we don’t know yet, I think it’s a little early to blame Apple for something that hasn’t even happened yet. And I would think that if they knew it was delayed into iOS 19, they would just say that. Release an official statement. Change the wording on the website. But none of that has happened yet, so I’m figuring there’s still a good possibility that the features could come in a later iOS 18 update.
Agreed. Personally, I don’t think the delay is that big of a deal, even if it is delayed into iOS 19 (which there’s no hard evidence of yet). Things happen, unforeseen problems arise. That’s just how the world works. I won’t be upset with Apple for a delay, especially considering how much work is required with features like this.

Apple wouldn't just let an employee casually cause bad PR like that, it was almost certainly intentionally done on Friday which is the day bad news is sent out. There's still a chance for iOS 18 but doing things like deleting the commercial which gave them all the way until the end of this year isn't a good sign. It'll be interesting to see if they make any changes to the Apple website.
Sure, but I will point out that that first article is almost purely speculation. It’s just the way that specific author interprets the statement from the Apple spokesperson. Apple has not officially said anything about these features being delayed into iOS 19. If they knew they were looking at such a delay, why wouldn’t they release an official statement saying as much? Edit the wording on the official page? Personally, I think there’s a good chance they come in a later iOS 18 update. But I think it’s also possible they could be delayed into iOS 19. I’m not saying that that’s impossible. Like I said, read and form your own opinion. At this point all opinions are equal.
Sure, but my point is that if they knew development was going to be delayed into iOS 19, and it wouldn’t just be arriving in a later 18 update, then one would think he would have specifically said as much. I’d also expect to see changes on the official page. Neither of those things have happened yet. The ad being pulled works with either. And here’s my personal thoughts. iOS 18.6 will come into beta likely after iOS 19 is in beta. So if they’re facing such steep delays, it would make sense to me that these features would be rolled back into an update like 18.6 perhaps even 18.7, and then those features would be incorporated into the iOS 19 beta cycle once the finalized 18.6 version dropped (or other 18 update). Delaying the features into an update like 18.6 would give them more time to work on it and account for the delay than trying to rush to get it ready for the first iOS 19 beta which should drop in June. Perhaps they’ve chosen to tell us about this delay to prepare us for these features to not be present in iOS 18 before WWDC25. It doesn’t mean they’re rolling it out in iOS 19. As I’ve said, maybe they will delay them into iOS 19, I’m not saying that is impossible or anything. I just am saying that there’s also a good chance they could merely be delayed into a later iOS 18 update, and we lack definitive evidence in either direction.

Yes, I totally agree. With lack of definitive evidence in either direction, all opinions are equally valid. Both are very possibly correct. I just would caution people to keep that in mind and would recommend they don’t start getting upset with Apple for delaying iOS 18 features into iOS 19 until we know for sure that that’s actually what’s happening. 👍🏻
