Huh. I had no idea that the flashlight beam width could be changed in software. How is this even implemented? It's not like there's a reflector in there that can be moved.

The flashlight controls must be hardware specific. Don't have it on my 13 PM.
Ah maybe something specific with the flash module, available on 14 PM.

Really nice improvement though, been wanting a softer light for years - no longer need to hold my finger over the light to reduce the output!

What's interesting is that the brightness can be set REALLY dim, they just don't let you do it from the control center in iOS 17 and earlier. Does the new beta let you finally go really dim natively?

I have a Shortcut called "Nitelite" that turns on the flashlight super dim for walking around a pitch black room at night without disturbing anyone, for example. The "Toggle Flashlight" shortcut command has a smooth slider for brightness and you can go *REALLY* dim, even to the point that you look at the flash module and it's just glowing softly.

I also noticed that there's now a bubbling effect when you change the volume.

Whilst it seems that iOS 18 gives you more granular control and a new option for the breadth of the flash, you can already increase/decrease the intensity of the flash from control centre in iOS 17 and below by pressing and holding on the flash icon which brings up 4 different levels.

EDIT - unless by *REALLY* dim you mean lower than what is available in control centre in iOS 17 and below? If so then fair enough!

Now my big question. Does the passwords app hold credit card info or is it really just logins?

ICloud Keychain has credit cards. So it just makes sense for it all to be in one place

Nice features BUT is it just me or is the UI design all over the place and very Un-Apple like?

The new Home Screen is indeed one of the strangest Apple designs with those tinted icons.
I was skeptical in the demo, and after trying it myself, it's awful.
Yeah, Apple is bread-crumbing us. iPhone sales are tanking and Apple’s innovation has stagnated. They were caught off guard by the rise of AI. Now they are giving us the things we have been waiting for years to receive. It won’t be enough tho.

Yeah that's what I mean. Even the dimmest setting from the control panel is like the Sun at night in a pitch black room. Shortcuts can make it go much dimmer.

Can you share your Nitelite shortcut?

The battery control in settings now displays when the phone is charging in slow charge in orange color instead of green color. Use time while on battery is still green.

Yes, this lowest one isn't very low. iOS 18 allows for an even dimmer light!

Yes, natively much lower in the middle option. Your shortcut may go even lower, but this is a nice option nonetheless.
Seems to turning off some LEDs on the flash module to spread the light differently depending on your option.
Can have quite a focused narrow beam too.

Why don't they just put a dot in front of the flash light, instead of two scroll bars? Drag it farther from the light and it gets brighter. Closer dimmer. To the left narrower. To the right wider. My 2013 Toyota radio has that for adjusting the speakers. Then they can create a whole other set of settings in case you want those actions reversed. They are really missing their chance to create more bloat.

Yeah starting with the iPhone 14. Prism flash lens. Guess this what they were waiting to make better use of it.
