Maybe we should move to a 2-yr release schedule? Have a “snow leopard” release every tick-tock year?

Or just do point releases as features are done like normal software??

THIS!!!

The only thing that creates this pressure is the history of wanting big reveals of new software features at every WWDC. Apple could resolve this pressure by a simple change of decision(s) and policy.

Who cares about about an annual cadence when getting it right might seek a different schedule? Conceptually, there are big updates done but held back for this artificial schedule and then other updates promised but not deliverable by the Fall release. Why not make releases launch when they are ready & polished instead of waiting for one big bundle of "reveals" once each year?

If someone thinks this is about the press, concentrating all the big news into one day/week means a lot of advancements get lost is the noise explosion. Another way would be to regularly release big & new and thus have more regular attention by media throughout the year. And nice new features that might otherwise be buried by other announcements at WWDC would get their full day in the (media) sun too.

"Historically, Apple has unveiled new software features at WWDC in June and then released fully complete software updates in September alongside new iPhone models."

Historically as in iOS 4 or 5 maybe. They've been dragging out WWDC announced features for years.

"Gurman reports that this extended rollout of iOS 18 features through various point releases is creating a cascading effect on iOS 19's development timeline. The situation is unfortunately expected to result in a similarly staggered deployment of features in the next iOS cycle that is likely to frustrate many Apple users."

Or...hear me out...you could reduce the announced feature set for iOS 19 at WWDC next year, so that people aren't frustrated that it's almost until the next major release before features announced in the current one see the light of day. That way they're more polished, and you won't have those frustrated users Gurman is referring to.

True, but they're selling devices yearly that the software needs to be written for.

There's no way they'll switch to 2 years, it'll cost them $$$$.

New iPhone =/= new iOS. Apple could have released all this AI stuff in a point update on iOS 17 with an iPhone 16, and it would have been fine. I just don't care about version numbers, and the vast, vast majority of iPhone users don't, either.

...or they decouple app updates (mail, music, safari, etc.) from requiring a firmware update just to get new features. Download the updated apps, with new features, from the app store. Simple.

Then how could they do marketing when competitors still release annually? A 2-year release schedule is suicidal.

Delays in Apple's plans, you don't say?

Impossible. Apple always releases well tested, complete, polished, relatively bug free and reliable software, with the best features than ever before. And always in a timely fashion. We love it.

iOS 12 had minimal new features but focused on stability because of bugs in iOS 11

iOS 19 seems to be following the footsteps of iOS 12 since the major feature of iOS 18 [Apple intelligence] is still not fully released until sometime before WWDC 2025

The situation is unfortunately expected to result in a similarly staggered deployment of features in the next iOS cycle that is likely to frustrate many Apple users.

Why that conclusion? Staggered deployment is a plus if it helps to roll out more solid updates (i.e., fewer bugs) and over time there are more updates of a substantial nature like they currently are.

Every single year, the same story. In fact, “Hello Apple Intelligence” is just a joke! Some countries received it yesterday (after announcing it 6 months ago), and in Europe, it’s still a pipe dream.

Apple is lucky it doesn’t have a competing ecosystem; otherwise, it would be struggling to survive.
I bet the country rollout has to do with privacy issues and navigating that regulatory landscape.

Chicken 'n' egg though, hardware introduces the feature that software can take advantage of to push sales.

If the period between updates is long, then you're in a position like today where you get the device & are continually waiting for the features, it's just kicking the can.

I would be shocked if the same team working on iOS 18 is the same team working on iOS 19...

Have a feeling iOS 19 is going to be a very minor update, bug fixes and trickling out more AI enhancements..... Apple is probably saving any major headlining features for iOS 20 which is a major milestone release... 20th anniversary
iOS 20 would be iOS's 19th birthday.

I know of no one that is frustrated because XYZ feature will not be out until February or March. This is just more of Gurman trying to stay relevant.

Well maybe their UI and artistic designers have more time to spend re-evaluating their choices since they moved away from the initial Skeuomorphism.
Maybe they come up with something new, fresh and less Pokemon style.
Wish that was the case. But it’s definitely not. Sadly.

Now they've established with iOS 18 that Apple Intelligence requires A17Pro and up (or likely in most consumers minds, iPhone 16 and up), could they separate out Apple Intelligence updates from iOS updates? Perhaps launch a new iOS version in September with all the new non-AI features and then have either a steady drip of AI features through the year, or have a big AI feature update half way through the year so the AI deadline is 6 months away from the iOS deadline.

Or, go even further (as people have been suggesting for years) and allow individual Apple apps to be updated through the App Store update facility without having to hit iOS release deadlines?

Let’s be real - all the “AI” stuff was originally planned for iOS 19 as a complete package.

Then the ChatGPT etc hype came along more quickly than expected and Apple panicked and had to rush something out quickly so as not to appear to be falling behind.
