This is great news, and I plan to put all my social media apps behind some biometric security... now next time I accidentally leave my phone unlocked at the church potluck, no one's going to be able to see how many Instagram models I'm really following. 😤

Every financial app I use requires a password or face id to enter the app. I would not be a customer of any financial institution that didn’t have this level of protection.

Also to add stolen device protection in case someone else tries to do this and knows your 6 digit number

The important ones tend to run you though a text message authentication too.

If this comes to fruition, this feature is EXTREMELY overdue.
I appreciate everyone will have differing opinions on Jailbreaking (and that is fine), however this feature was available as a Jailbreak tweak, 10 years ago.
Yep, and it worked wonderfully.

This is pretty much standard already and has been for a while in many third party apps such as Outlook, WhatsApp, Signal etc, so it's a welcome development that Apple introduces this as well. Frankly I am surprised that they haven't already.

One thing it will likely do is introducing some friction when you try to do some things while the phone is locked, eg trying to send a message with Siri, but I'm sure they'll either figure it out or it's just a necessary tradeoff.

It will be great if they don't let passcode as a way to bypass biometrics.
Knowing Apple though, that will not happen.
This option of bypassing biometrics with passcode is the same stupid crap as Windows firewall was in Windows XP.

I would turn this on for every app in a heartbeat. It would render every stolen phone utterly useless, assuming the user has the brains to implement a 10+ digit passcode.

Of course passcode will always “bypass” biometrics. The key to access the SE is locked by your passcode. Once you unlock it with passcode, then biometrics are able to operate. That’s why you need the passcode to enable biometrics when the phone boots and why you can’t just use biometrics to edit your biometrics in Settings.
Your statement is a very bizarre and troubling one and hints that you may have short or otherwise insecure passcodes.

Meanwhile any Tom, Dick or Harry can still take unsolicited pictures from your lock screen and have them de facto uploaded to your iCloud account without your knowledge or permission 🤦‍♂️
