and some other non siri features will be delayed as well. So i wonder what will launch on time to get people interested hmmm

So, this'll mean another round of RAM bumps in the iPhone 17 lineup? Will be interesting so see where they end up on this as Local LLMs are very RAM heavy.

well this might be why the pros next year are getting 12GB of ram.
Yeah I also think the 12 GB for the 17 pros. Laughable how many here thought the 16 pro will get a 12 or even 16 GB bump, even though it was crystal clear it will be underperforming in this area. Now it will have the same amount as an Iphone SE 4 :D

Can we get multiple user spaces on iPhone? would be nice to have completely separate spaces. limit the feature to 512gb devices so it's an upsell - everyone wins - apple gets the extra money they want, users get the feature they want

I’d rather Apple work on more useful, necessary features than the AI/ChatGPT stuff.

A foundational aspect of AI is Machine Learning (ML), which is heavily sprinkled across Apple's operating systems that you use every day without even knowing it. Now imagine removing all that ML functionality, but everything else was exactly the same. Our computing experiences would be overwhelming and frustrating!

No learning keyboards (for auto-suggest)
No smartly-grouped notifications.
No photo processing pipelines that improve the look of our photos
.. and countless other ways that are "invisible" to us, but helpful.

Generative AI (eg. ChatGPT) is just one capability and doesn't represent the entirety of what AI has to offer.

While I agree with that capability — separate users —, macOS offers this and how many people actually use it? We likely prefer everything together in one "space".

What I have been appreciating lately is separate "Profiles" in Safari. I can open up a particular profile and it's configured in a certain way. Open up another profile and it's specific to that need. If that idea could be applied across the operating system, that would be amazing, but I don't see it happening.

glad we can agree it's useful. why don't you see it happening?

Define useful...
Definitely AI...

The Dialog Enhance feature in Apple TV is really nice, and probably uses AI.
My personal hope is that they move it from aTV to an option for video playback everywhere - iPad, iPhone, Mac, etc.

I'm also hoping that as the next step they use AI scaling to
- upsample low res content
- detect and remove 3:2 pullup screwups and interlace artifacts
- stretch SDR content out to HDR (kinda like colorizing B/W) and
- what the hell, colorize BW (long term stretch goal!...)

Yeah yeah yeah, you purists don't want any of this. Whatever. Leave it switched off so the rest of us can enjoy it.

That’s right, folks, iOS 18 is OLD NEWS! It’s time to get excited for the ALL NEW iOS 19! This is the best, most powerful, most capable iOS that Apple has ever released for iOS devices. And, for the first time EVER, iOS 19 is built WITH Apple Intelligence built in, allowing for customers to leverage the best-in-class machine learning while maintaining the level of privacy that only Apple can provide. iOS 19 is the intelligent choice for customers and Apple thinks you’re going to love it!

So glad I just decided not to upgrade my old iPhone 12. Testing Apple AI on a MacBook and there’s really such a limited to no value at this point from what ive used and copilot and ChatGPT are easily accessible. Initial reviews on ai features in 18.1 are comical at best.

Damn, Apple. What’s going on? Jeez. Now, watch they advertised as those features with the new iPhone 17 series but knowing they won’t be available until 6 months later.

When he was young, he joined the line,
He heard the call, "They're just behind!"
"But Apple—oh, Apple!—does it right!"
He clung to the words, his shining delight.

Through schooldays they laughed at his shiny white phone,
No widgets, no cameras, just smooth, polished stone.
"They're late! They're behind!" said his friends with a grin,
But he clutched his belief, they would soon win.

He went off to college, worked hard day and night,
While others tapped screens with styluses bright.
He nodded and smiled, "No worry, it's fine,
Apple comes late, but when they do, they shine."

He moved to his job, his first office delight,
No multitasking there in sight.
While others were typing, he'd slowly swipe,
"They'll catch up soon; they'll do it right."

The years turned to decades, still late to the game,
"Foldable screens? A gimmick, just fame!"
But his children grew up with their Androids so neat,
While Dad stuck to AirPods, forever on repeat.

He retired at last, in his rocking chair bright,
Still waiting for features that never took flight.
His children gathered near, as he passed them his shares,
His life spent defending that fruit beyond compare.

And when Papa went late, they all had to smile,
"He lived a bit long, but he did it in style."
"Papa was late, but oh, he did things right,"
As they checked their inheritance under Android's soft light.

How did Tim Cook go to all those Bilderberg meetings and the Silicon Valley summer camps for tech CEOs, etc., and not realize generative text was going to be a huge thing? It seems like they caught on at the same time as the public.

And even if he had never heard of it, Siri alone, apart from being nothing like ChatGPT is still so often non-functional for the most basic voice commands you could do with IVR systems back in the 1990s.

I quite frequently will try to place calls hands-free and Siri just goes completely wildcard in picking names of whom to call.
Yeah, I hate that to. I recently wrote "xxx's brother" in the "Company" field of one of my contacts and now Siri always wants to call him, when I tell it to call "my brother". Siri just never evolved in a way it could and probably should have. They just went with "reliable but safe stupid".

But imho, one can't blame them too much for not picking up on the LLM-trend earlier. After all, they had their neural engine and AI functions pretty early. Before version 3, chatGPT was just one of many interesting AI demos, it was not that evident that LLMs were going to be the next big thing. Naturally, google was farther ahead in that field.

But it seems like LLMs are hitting a wall right now anyway, so there's probably time to catch up and implement and refine what's already there - something that apple has always been good at (although rather with hardware).

For me, the integration of AI is proof that the manufacturers (whether Apple, Samsung or Microsoft) can't come up with anything more.
The rhythm of annual updates has been squeezed out, trampled on and flattened.

It would be best if Apple could be a pioneer here and postpone the next system upgrade. To 2026.
Maybe a bug fix update in 2025.

But this “let's throw in half-baked and mostly useless AI features so that we can present something as new” is pointless.

And I'm not alone in this opinion. Every survey, every study, every interview shows the same thing:
Users are suspicious of AI and see no added value in it. No manufacturer manages to sell this stuff.

Please, Apple.
You don't have to take part in this act of desperation. Sell your devices as “almost bug-free” because you only made corrections for a year. That would be an argument.
If we get nothing else out of AI than a better Siri, then it's a huge win, apart from that, I'm sure most of us find the clean up in photo's very useful, as well as re write....the summary feature can be very useful on occasions, as well as the visual intelligence and the kids will love the gen moji & playground stuff.
I suspect most people are irked, because they have to buy new phones 🤣

They need to go back to underpromising and overdelivering instead of the overpromising and underdelivering they are doing now. Also, get rid of the yearly software updates and focus on actually cleaning up the code and the bugs instead of rushing **** out.
They certainly over delivering with AirPods Pro 2's 😊

Many people use the multiple users feature on Pixel and stock Android. It's the main reason people don't use other platforms like iOS. They lack this important privacy feature.

Safari profiles are nice, but they don't do complete data segregation for apps+data outside of Safari. Multiple user spaces do. Enabling this feature for 512gb+ devices would only bring Apple more customers and more money.

The feature already exists for education customers. All they have to do is enable it for consumers.
All you have to do is get a Pixel 😊

finally! the 2 year software release cycle is here! please just snow leopard this one Craig.. I just want stableness
It doesn't mention anything about a 2-year software release cycle. It says features for each OS release will be implemented over the 1-year roadmap, as opposed to releasing everything in September.

18.2 is a much bigger release when it comes to AI features. The next one will be in Spring 2025 with 18.4
