Mine asked for credit card, so I was going to research work arounds (I didn't attempt to use my card for verification) then it said my account was old enough for them to verify I was over 18.

Be very careful about sharing ID's etc with other verification companies as you don't know how secure their data is.

Also people blaming Labour etc, this legislation was introduced by the tories. Labour could, and should have cancelled it.

what if you just dont do it?
what exactly apps / services / things are not working anymore?
i want to see people to post here what they were able to do on their iphones, but not anymore because they didnt pass age verification yet.
There was an annoying badge on the settings app (I get a bit OCD about notifications), but I cleared it with account age after ignoring the credit card request.

Right…. Just got off the phone with Apple Support.

Here’s my situation. My UK account is 15 1/2 years old, created in 2010. Left UK in 2019 to live in another country, never changed my account location because I would have lost some (or all?) of my many purchases. iOS 26.4 is now prompting me for age verification, only giving me the option of a credit card. I don’t have a credit card. I don’t have a U.K. license or identity card. I do have a U.K. passport.

Apple Support says that this is a known issue, that because I have used beta releases in the past (which is a flag on my account) it doesn’t work properly. Apparently this was happening in the beta. They have filed a report to add to the existing ones. Take this with a grain of salt, you kind of get the impression that the people you speak to don’t really know what’s going on.

That’s it, that’s all they can do. In the meantime I have a child locked account.
Similar situation here. I’m also living abroad (Switzerland). My UK drivers license was exchanged for a Swiss one many years ago. My UK Apple ID uses a UK debit card. Neither Swiss DL or credit cards are accepted. All I have is a UK passport. It’s ridiculous that it can’t be used for age verification
I chatted with Apple support and finally spoke to a human who told me pretty much the same as they told you. They are aware of the problem and are working on it. I have a callback scheduled on Saturday. If it does get resolved I’ll post something here.

Commenting to remind me to check back on Saturday as I as a matter of principle won’t use credit cards

  • Edit: dementia ridden mother. Kill me. She doesn't have anything.
I'm worried about this too. My mother is medically ineligible to drive (ie no DL allowed), too frail to travel (no PP) and does not have a credit card.

Her Apple ID is about 13 years old so I'm hoping that's enough for a cutoff, otherwise my last hope is using one of my IDs/credit cards.

Yeah exactly the same situation and age of Apple account. I'll post back if/when I find out.

Best thing all round is get her a credit card, only use it in the Apple account, set up a DD for paying off, job done. Safer too.

I've just spoke to apple about this - I'm in the UK, I am 35+ years old and don't have a credit card. The loading screen suggests I can use my government issued ID but then there's no option. The apple support told me to get a credit card....

Wanted a credit card to be scanned advising it wouldn't be charged - no problem I scanned the card, everything all good.
Next page states it's to be added to said apple account - no way, if I wanted that I would've added it already.
Cluster from start to end.

Do we know whether this code which seems to be globally in 26.4 but only activated in UK....has the ability to roll out to further regions by a soft switch (rather than another later update) ?

Update here ... my mother can't get past the ID verification thing because she doesn't understand it. Fortunately she still has a land line and can call me on that.

I've now got to take a day off to go across the entire of the city and go and sort it for her. She has no ID so she's ending up with a restricted child's phone.

This is a ****ing disaster that completely destroys any trust I have in Apple or any of the technology companies.

Anyone having issues in the U.K. with the stupid age verification. Credit card won’t work, ID doesn’t scan just leaves the camera open?

Another thank you to Kier!
Yes, me too. I don't have any Credit Cards and don't want one and apparently it won't accept Bank Debit Cards. But interestingly, trying again on my Driving Licence worked if I did it the wrong way around, opposite to what it asks i.e Back 1st then Front 2nd. Also, just doing one of my iPhones also fixed the other one automatically. MM!

Mine was confirmed on account age, I have had an account since 2005, it didn't ask for anything else.

This is a botched ID verification (they should allow passports as you have to jump through a million hoops to get one) but the fact it’s been brought to the UK at all is a Conservative act (The Online Safety Act).

Yeah. Well aware. Labour should repeal it rather than have let it carry on.

Anything 18+ will be blocked, from apps to websites.

The only way to get them unblocked is to get your Apple account verified.

As a disabled Apple user in the UK I am locked out of this system. I don’t have a credit card and am medically disqualified from driving so I don’t have a licence. I eventually spoke to a kind guy at Apple accessibility support in the US. He confirmed by messaging Apple developers directly that UK passports, debit cards etc are not valid.

He said he was concerned there is no workaround to the automatic system and would escalate from his end. He added that the developers think they ‘must’ proceed exactly like this to comply with UK law. This doesn’t ring true given that passport ID is ubiquitous here and other digital verification systems work quite differently. Until further notice I have been downgraded from ‘disabled adult’ to ‘child’ in Apple world.
