Sit down I’ve got something to tell you. Apple weren’t the first to release a mp3 player, smartphone, tablet, smartwatch, or AR/VR headset.

Apple like to take their time and not rush into a market. They are always behind everyone else. It’s because they believe they can make a better product true to their own vision and/or they are incompetent.
They never what is promised

Might install the public beta. Still not decided. Hopefully by the time the final version releases, there will be an option to select the desired level of transparency for the liquid glass design. Waiting to see how Apple will adapt the software for the foldable.

I wonder if a folding iPhone is enough of a departure from a form factor perspective, that Apple will look to unveil the device early in the year such as at an event near WWDC 2026, so that developers can openly have access to the SDK to support it rather than a few privileged developers getting the access.

Feels like a device that developers are going to want some time with the SDKs to optimise things for, similar to how some other product launches have several months from announcement (Watch, VisionOS) in part to get the software stack there.

If not, that’s a lot of iOS logic to try keep out of iOS27 Betas.

That's certainly not what I've been hearing from developers. Marco Arment (the Overcast dev) has said these are the roughest iOS betas he's used in years. A few other prominent devs I follow have said similar things.
That’s interesting, I hope it’s not been too rough for them.

There’s usually between 5&7 betas released before the public one. We’re only on dev beta 3.

This either indicates a recklessness on the part of Apple, or a knowledge that their negative feedback statistics are in the right place for a public beta.

These are dev betas, things are expected to break. It means Apple may have more work to get through in time for launch than they have in recent years, but I don’t think that means Apple’s is being reckless.

God help us all. I truly hate the "roundification" and "bolding" of everything, not to mention liquid glass:(. After experiencing iOS 18.5 and iOS 26, I'm still on iOS 17.7 and staying here until I see some REAL progress. Shoehorning visionOS features into iPhones? Yeah, that'll go well 🤦‍♂️

As the three homescreens in that photo show, under Tim Cook, Apple's idea of "innovation" is copying Microsoft's stupidity.

I think the AI hype may be starting to wear off. *crosses fingers*

As with the .com bubble, any useful tools are buried in a pile of junk produced by opportunists riding the hype train. Joe Public sees AI as bloatware that threatens his job, jacks up the price of NVidia stock, and replaces creative art with creepy, robotic slop like The Velvet Sundown or the hundreds of bizarre AI videos on YouTube.
AI isn’t going anywhere. It works fantastic in everything but the iPhone

Instead of Apple's "Walled Garden", I find the following image much more appropriate:

The Apple Straitjacket. For your safety...

The dev beta has been mostly solid since Liquid Glass has been scaled back. There are still some jagged edges on the design side - places with overlapping text, odd corner misalignments and this bizarre “effect” when clicking links in Safari where it appears the page “drops” into the URL bar, not a fan of that.

I feel like iOS 27 will be about battening down the hatches on iOS 26 and adding features mostly geared towards the foldable.

I’m 99% sure about my decision to upgrade from my 12 Pro to a 17 Pro Max in the fall. Since I’m almost certain to upgrade, I’m going to try out the public beta to see how it looks and performs on the 12 Pro. Looking forward to trying it out!

The first iOS 26 public beta should arrive this week, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

"All indications are that iOS 26 should go into the public beta phase this coming week," said Gurman, in his Power On newsletter today.

In a social media post last week, Gurman said that the iOS 26 public beta would likely be released on or around Wednesday, July 23.

Apple previously announced that a public beta of iOS 26 would be available in July, but it did not provide a more specific timeframe.

The first public betas of iPadOS 26, macOS 26, tvOS 26, watchOS 26, and HomePod software 26 should be released alongside the iOS 26 public beta, and Apple is also planning to offer a public beta of its next major AirPods firmware update for the first time. Apple does not plan to offer a visionOS 26 public beta, though, according to its beta website.

Anyone can sign up to be a member of the Apple Beta Software Program, for free, and gain access to the public betas for testing. As always, we highly recommend backing up your devices before installing beta software, in case of issues.

All of the updates are already available in developer beta. A few years ago, Apple dropped the requirement to pay $99 per year for an Apple Developer Program membership in order to access the developer betas, but you still need to have an Apple Developer account. Technically, though, the public should wait for the public betas.

Looking ahead, the first iOS 27 rumor has surfaced.

According to Gurman, Apple will formally kick off development of iOS 27 soon, and the company plans to prioritize software features that are tailored for the long-rumored foldable iPhone. That device is expected to launch in the second half of next year.
