Just out of curiosity, has there been a public release but a different build that the RC? I guess this would save releasing an RC 2. Or am I talking complete and utter bog-snorkling bollocks?
Yes, this happened nearly every single time for the iOS 18 updates. It even happened with 26.0.

Yeah excited for the release! Sadly, I’ll have to install it later today, as I’m going to be busy when it drops. But I’m going to be even more interested in seeing what comes with the first beta of 26.2! 👍🏻
True. Also curious to see if there are any noticeable additions/changes in 26.2.

Anyone know if the expectation is that 26.2 goes public before christmas? I don't want to jump on any potential 26.2 beta train to be left stranded over the christmas period waiting ages for an update

It can really go either way. Sometimes, Apple releases something before Christmas. Other times, they wait until after the new year.

The .2 (and a couple .3) updates have been released before Christmas since iOS 13.

13.3, 14.3, 15.2, 16.2, 17.2, 18.2 were all the second week in December.

I juste hope that the lock screen swipe works also for iPad OS . I have never taken a photo with my iPads and it has always bugged me.
