I don’t believe that will be the case, I read a piece from Apple Insider explaining why that’s a misunderstanding/misinterpretation of the rumors. It sounds like Siri will be Siri, made by Apple, and running on-device to preserve privacy and security. And even when Apple’s AI has to access a server to perform a task, the way Apple has set up Private Cloud Compute prevents Apple from accessing your data, and the data is deleted after the task is completed. There are checks and balances in place to ensure that Apple can’t collect your data. Something that isn’t true of Google’s spyware called “Gemini”… Gemini would just be another choice alongside ChatGPT as an extension…Taking into account that the intelligent SIRI will be a version of Gemini in theory specially prepared for Apple, you will never be 100% certain about what happens to your data, just as you don't have it now. You just decide who to trust, but you never really know exactly what's going on in the background with the data.
And even if Apple were to use aspects of Gemini’s models, they would most definitely be modified and they would still only run on-device, so wouldn’t be able to give data to Google. But I find this idea doubtful considering the stuff I’ve read. I think Siri will be Siri. They had it nearly completed, just had a few bugs to work out before release that postponed the release, so I see no reason they would use something else when their own model would be far better suited for things like integrating into App Intents and such, where Gemini doesn’t know what an App Intent is or how to integrate with one as it wasn’t designed to be a system level AI assistant for iOS…
Here’s the Apple Insider piece I’m talking about (there were other articles I read as well, but this one explains it really nicely):
Apple's long game will result in a safe, secure, and ethical AI ecosystem
Despite recent headlines screaming that Apple is behind, or caving in, Siri won't be "powered" by Gemini, ChatGPT, or anything other than safe and secure Apple Foundation Models. Here's what's actually happening behind the inflammatory headlines.
