The truth is, they've probably been working on 26.4 for some time now, so it's possible they won't need much more than the traditional four betas. And if they maintain the same schedule of four betas and a Release Candidate, releasing it next week or the week after would allow them to meet a public release deadline for the week of late March/early April.
And if they need more betas, the sooner the first beta is released, the more feedback they'll get on potential bugs and the more time they'll have to fix them before the official release.
I agree, they have been working on it for a bit. I lean towards a non pattern following update cycle as I thought more. This is feeling like as heavy of a potential lift as the 26.0 release. I could see if they release as much as rumored that this cycle might be a deviation from the pattern.
