iOS 27 Brings New Functionality to HomePod

I think Apple want to give the OG HomePod 27 because it’s a refining update.

So that when 28 is announced they can possibly drop support for it.

It’s impressive that it’s still supported but I bet Apple didn’t want to leave it on 26 because of how unoptimised it is.

I hope I’m wrong but it will have to be dropped off of os support eventually and I think the refined 27 version might be the ideal one to retire it on.

Where is the evidence for them wanting to give the first gen HomePod OS 27? It doesn’t make much sense to me why they would continue supporting this device and not the first gen 4k Apple TV.

You are right to have doubts.

Rumours suggest it would and it would make sense because HomePod is a simpler piece of hardware and the firmware is smaller.

Not sure if any users on here have a 1st gen HomePod and got 27 public beta running on it as well speak?

But lets say it is compatible, it would literally get the bare bones of 27.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was no new features from 27 (not that there’s many) but because it’s a refinement update it would make sense to do it.

That said I am confident the 1st gen wouldn’t get HomePod os 28.

So is it or is it not true that the HomePod 1st Gen will support OS 27? Has anyone actually installed it on their HomePod?

I’m guessing this is a no, because I can’t find a profile to install other than Public Beta 26, and no evidence anywhere otherwise.

I was hoping that it would support the OG too.
I'm not running the beta. I don't have the patience for them anymore - from any company.

I certainly have decided to be a lot more intentional about what I install betas on… simply because I have too many critical things I rely on and have less time and patience to contribute to long bouts of stop-whatever-your’re-doing troubleshooting, or a problem introduced in a beta that contributes to a weird stability issue even when the public release comes around.

Honestly, Apple betas have not been bad, and I’ve been doing it since Snow Leopard. Maybe I’ve just been lucky. The worst thing that ever happened to me was when my OG HomePod was bricked on an (I believe) iOS 18 beta, which required an out of warranty replacement. I’m still bitter that Apple wouldn’t cover that. Years ago, I also had my OG iPhone brick itself many times (even on a stable update), and Apple DID cover those OOW replacements…. Maybe it just depends on the luck of the draw.

That being said, beta testing isn’t for everyone.

There was a time when I installed every beta I could get my hands on. I loved it. I got a lot of free software (final releases) when I did it as a hobby! This was in the early to mid 90's (DOS/Windows platform). Eventually, I started my career in IT working for a large ISP as a QA tester. Maybe I'm just too old for all of the hassles 😆
