iOS 27: Dedicated Siri App to Include Auto-Deleting Chats Feature

Apple in iOS 27 will include an enhanced Siri with a dedicated app that gives users options to keep conversations in memory for a limited time, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Writing in his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman says that Apple is keen to market its privacy credentials as a key advantage in the way it is implementing AI across its software compared to rivals.

Cognizant of the perception that it has fallen behind other companies in the race to integrate AI into its operating systems, Apple will lean into privacy as a core tenant of its approach – starting with giving users options to auto-delete chats.

In the Settings panel for the new Siri app, "users will be able to choose to keep conversations for 30 days, one year, or forever," says Gurman, based on his sources. A similar feature can already be found in the Messages app's Settings.

"Most leading AI chatbots today rely heavily on histories and memory systems to personalize responses and improve future interactions," says Gurman. "But Apple will place tighter limits around how memory works, including restrictions on what information can persist and how long it can be retained."

Gurman also mentions that users will be able to decide if the Siri app opens showing either a grid of prior conversations or a new chat screen.

Apple's enhanced Siri will be powered by Google's Gemini models, but Apple apparently won't emphasize this, given that Google is historically known as an ad-driven business that farms users' data.

Another interesting tidbit in Gurman's latest newsletter is that the new Siri app will be labeled "beta," despite being the culmination of two years of delays. Apple recently agreed to pay $250 million to settle a U.S. class action lawsuit over delayed Siri features, with eligible iPhone users able to receive up to a $95 payout.

I'd prefer privacy over an AI automating my spending.

This is kind of a Catch 22.

These things are most useful with memory. But ChatGPT has shown me that can get kinda creepy fast if they're not real careful.

Disappearing chats are table stakes. I would like to think it would be "safer" from a privacy perspective to ask Siri more sensitive questions, but they're putting ads everywhere they can get them so this is wishful thinking.

It'll just go into Apple Ads instead of Google Ads or OpenAI Ads (or whatever they wind up calling the inevitable division that winds up making all the money.)

Gurman seems to forget that it will learn, and have encrypted, local access to everything you consent to on your iPhone. But crucially none of it escapes your device. Siri knows; Apple doesn't.

I see your eloquently articulated point, but I think "post-privacy" is a very dangerous meme to allow any traction.

If you are comfortable giving every aspect of your life over to a multi trillion dollar corporation to use as it sees fit, go for it. Not everyone wants that.

We do still need privacy from government, business, and each other. I know we've all been abused for so long it seems normal, but this is not normal.

I think you misread the article (or maybe you just read the headline), because what it actually says is that Apple will provide the option of auto-deleting chats after a certain time, not that they force the auto-deletion on the user.

Yeah, this article, that’s summarizing another article, was worded extremely extremely poorly.
The original article mentions that it will be just like text messages, with the option to delete after 30 days, a year, or never.

Deletion is generally not an issue with any of the other AI services. You can already delete selective chats, which is what you would want.

I can’t see auto deleting chats being a useful feature, as you would want the history to remain until you’re completely done with the chat. Otherwise, you have to recap everything to continue.

But maybe some people can’t be bothered to click a delete button, so this feature may be handy for them. 🤷‍♂️

I don’t think “privacy is dead anyway” is a good argument for abandoning it entirely. The fact that technology (networks & communications, for that matter, the way they were originally designed) makes privacy harder doesn’t mean people suddenly stop valuing it. Privacy isn’t just about secrecy, it’s about control, consent, and limiting unnecessary data collection.

Apple’s approach may lead to some tradeoffs compared to more aggressive AI companies, but there’s also a legitimate market for users who want strong on-device processing, minimal data retention, and transparency about what leaves their device. Calling that “crippling” assumes the only metric that matters is how much user data a company can collect and centralize.

We don’t usually argue that because a problem can’t be solved perfectly, companies should stop trying to mitigate it altogether.

Remeber that Apple is doing the “AI thing” long before it was a thing. Granted, they are not really interested in chats and GPTs, I suspect because they are not confortable not controlling the output, but we have Apple CPUs with neural networks since Apple A11 Bionic, introduced in September 2017. And the implementations are spreaded against the operating system apps. Most obvious example will be the Photos app.

Putting all the AI stuff aside, am I the only one that thinks the “30 days, 1 Year, Keep Forever” options for purging messages (and now maybe Siri chats) are absolutely absurd?

Either entirely too short, too long or not long enough depending on your prerogative, or forever. Why not give us some in between options or let us explicitly set how long we want threads to stick around?
