iOS 27 Tweaks Apple Wallet's U.S. Passport Feature

You have no constitutional rights at US border control.

The issue being that now ICE has come to a lot of our communities, and those of us who are even marginally suspect have been stopped simply for how we look. Our local law enforcement has a number of solid policies on the books regarding identifying themselves, due process, and such - but they can't stop either plainclothes or masked ICE agents from simply pulling people on the streets (which happened in a town one over from ours) or asking for device searches.

I tried it once at O'Hare, which was listed as accepting it. It appears to be scanned via NFC - and whatever exchange was supposed to happen did not work for me. I sheepishly provided my physical passport, as I was prepared for something to go wrong.

Eventually they'll sort these things out, but don't rely on it just yet.

I just used mine a few weeks ago and it worked great.

This is totally fair and why I mentioned that I'm coming from a place of privilege where I don't have to worry about it constantly. If I were in that situation I'd probably disable biometrics too.

Yes, that's pretty much the only place it's accepted. My results have been less than optimal, as out of 4 attempts I was only able to get their machine to read it 1 time, but if you can get their reader to work then they get your passport data and you proceed as usual.

The TSA agents manning the machine knew almost nothing about it, other than to say that I can try it if I want but most of the time it doesn't work and they'll need physical ID. The readers I had issue with all had a little wireless logo sticker on them that looks like it was placed as an afterthought, so I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that I just had the phone in the wrong spot.

I used a couple times in JFK and LAX, worked. The first time I tried it, few months ago, it did not work at the particular kiosk I was at, but since it worked the two times I tried it. One issue is a lot of TSA agents don't know how it works or whether it's the same as Touchless TSAPre, which is different.

I have used mine a few times but it's not really faster yet than handing them my ID to scan in the TSAPre line. Once, I asked to use it in Miami, they said someone trained to accept digital would have to get free from the line to come over or I could just use my license. I used my license and moved on. I have touchless setup as well with American but have not used that yet.

I got the deactivation notice on my iPhone running iOS 26.6. Not sure if it’s related to my iPad on iPadOS 27 Beta or if it’s impacting both OS versions. May be worth noting that VA just launched drivers license in Apple Wallet today so it could be related to backend stuff happening on Apple’s side.

I didn't receive a notification, but I just checked mine, and it says to remove the card and then re-add it. I just removed it and probably won't re-add it. As others have stated it wasn't any faster at any airports that I went through.

It's not faster until it suddenly is faster. That's why I tend to participate in such things, even if they're not making much of a difference in the beginning.

The way they keep pushing facial recognition, it seems that most airports are trying to skip over digital IDs.
 
I was able to re-add mine on the first try, at least. Whatever issue was keeping me from being able to add it early on seems to have been resolved. I like to think my long back-and-forth with the engineering team helped fix whatever it was.

I'm happy to put it back on because I'd rather scan digitally than put my physical license in the little machine; I'm much less worried about losing track of my phone when going through security. I do wonder if I'm giving them more info by using the digital ID, but I figure there's not really anything on the digital ID that isn't already on my driver's license.

Again, you need to learn how it works. Everything you can think of has already been accounted for.

Given what TSA and ICE are doing at the border, I rather have another way to prove I'm a citizen than getting misplaced into a detention center.
