iOS 27: What's New With the Mail App

I do not use iOS iPhone mail app, but I occasionally use iPad mail app when out of touch with my desktop (travelling)

Is all this iOS functionality coming to macOS mail? At the moment I use LanguageTool for Desktop free version. But I would enjoy the AI writing tools, if they work.

  • Now switch to the Settings app and go to Settings > Mail > Signature (at the very bottom)
  • In the text field, tap, hold, (and if there’s content here, select it all and delete it) and paste your signature.
  • At first it will look slightly wrong so, be sure to SHAKE your phone briefly to bring up the Undo dialog, and select "Undo Change Attributes”
  • Go to Mail and compose a new message. You should see your signature at the bottom.

Signatures should *not* have HTML, or references to graphics on the Internet. Those are triggers for spam filters.

The mail app is horrible. In older iOS versions, the first thing I would switch on was to download all messages. They removed that option years ago, because cloud. So now when I don’t have a bad signal - I can’t search my email or go to old ones. I have no idea why they removed the option. It wasn’t even the default.

Might be in your world, but in my world, all the companies in the market, most if not all of all the customers, have some sort of graphic (which is either company logo or a new product or service) on their signatures for advertisement purposes

I’ve tried something like this in the past (for iOS), at the end it was either forgetting image, or creating an empty box for it or another issue. Had to revert to Outlook sadly, which I really don’t like it

When I was using Windows, I used Thunderbird, but thought i would try the Apple mail app when I changed to MAc. It is fine. Maybe not for business use, but then I don't think it was ever made for that.

That's "months later" for me because until a few months ago I had been a Windows PC user for about 35 years but I had been using iPhone and iPad for well over a decade. When I finally moved to Mac for my desktop PC one of my motivations was to get the full benefit of the integration between all of my devices including my desktop PC and, while much has impressed me after getting my new Mac, one surprise and disappointment has been how badge notifications just do not seem to sync properly between devices for many apps.

Mail is the most annoying in terms of not syncing badge notifications and having to open the app to clear notifications on stuff I know I've already processed and archived on another device but, while I accept this might not be 100% Apple's fault (although maybe it is if the functionality it provides to app developers re notification sync is not working properly or maybe even non-existent) - the other app that causes me to think multiple times a day "this isn't as integrated as I'd hoped" is WhatsApp. Then again cathedrals have been built more quickly than Meta managed to get an iPad client out for WhatsApp so even if it is some issue that Apple addresses in its plumbing I don't have a whole lot of optimism abut how quickly Meta might move to take advantage of any fixes there.

Spam filtering is the job of your mail server. Why download all that spam just to delete it. Get a new mail server.

Maybe I’m in minority of people whi are just fine with the mail app. I just need it to have flags, to notify my about new emails and to run in the background. It does all of that. For me personally outlook and similar have too much going on in their interface. I know some people depend heavily on email communication and it’s important for them to have feature rich client, but I think for us non-demanding users, mail app is just fine. I had issues here and there with it, but nothing a quit and re-run would fix.

Just like grandpa used to say. He missed the good old times of going to the travel agent, booking a seat on a plane with a human, booking a hotel with them, calling the hotel up to ask about things he wanted to know, speaking with someone sitting in the hotel.

Not me. I haven't seen the inside of a travel agency in 30 years. I don't need to talk to humans to book a flight or a hotel. Doing business online is perfectly fine with me, no need for this kind of communication with a real person.

Same way with our kids. I don't think they will mind having personal AI agents doing business with travel agency AI agents. Tell them what you want, when, what the price limit is, what you like and what you don't like, let them check the reviews and let them do the repetitive and boring tasks for you. Let them show you a handful of options, double check everything and be done.

I mean I can't wait to have functioning, smart and safe AI agents on my iPhone or at home, telling them to talk to my phone company AI agent to sort things out that I would have to spend precious time on.
 
I can get by with most of the issues with iOS Mail (mainly by using it as a view / review - hardly ever for creating / reply), but more importantly, will we still be able to turn off Siri / AI?
Still a "Squirrel!" feature with significantly more downsides (privacy, security, environmental and cost) than its hyped worth for most.

Those "reviews" will, of course, be written by LLMs owned by private corporations who desire to separate your money from your wallet. Bogus glowing reviews. And when your "agent" books your trip, it'll be to the wrong place like Frankfurt Hahn instead of Frankfurt. And hallucinated on the wrong date. Thousands of dollars charged to your credit card by the "AI" in error. Like handing a loaded and cocked .45 to a toddler. These llms aren't *actually* intelligent. They call it "AI" but it's more of a buzzword marketing term than truth.

Any bets on whether autocorrect will still be crap with the RTM iOS 27?
It would be great if they would just release a major update with no new features and just bug fixes. FIX THE DAMN BUGS. Then add features the next year.
 
How about adding support - like every other mail client on earth - for HTML signatures, adding support for real time email fetching in the iOS version (ALSO like every other mail client), properly reading and parsing calendar events and ultimately make this dumpster fire of an app suck a bit less?
 
I was only coming here to sheepishly admit that I felt like I stood alone as one of the few users who really doesn’t have a good experience with Apple Mail...

Oh you aren't alone. It's been trash for a decade at this point. I moved on to Spark and never looked back. Don't think I like their AI changes though. I'm still on the old version for MacOS. They haven't ruined the UI yet on iPhone thank god. Figured, I'd give the new version a try again and they have a move Spark Classic settings over function. With a bit more tweaking it looks very similar to what I like (I'm a 3 pane user) with some nice QoL updates (marking read/done from inbox). The right click functionality has been turned into a search function though like Spotlight ... it's super odd.
