iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 will let users set third-party AI services as the default for Apple Intelligence features like Writing Tools and Image Playground, reports Bloomberg.

Apple has signed a deal with Google and plans to use a Gemini-based model for Apple Intelligence and Siri features in iOS 27, but users will also be able to choose their favorite AI service as an alternative.

Apple has already partnered with OpenAI to make ChatGPT available in lieu of Apple's built-in options for Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground on iOS 26, but in Apple's upcoming software updates, other third-party chatbots like Claude and Gemini will also be available. Instead of being limited to ChatGPT, users will select their preferred AI service.

Users can choose any AI provider that adds support for Apple's new iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 "Extensions" feature. From Bloomberg:
"Extensions allow you to access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand, through Apple Intelligence features such as Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground and more," according to a message shown in test versions of the software.
Apple also plans to let users choose voices from third-party AI services for Siri, which would make it clearer whether Siri or another AI product like Gemini is responding. Siri would use one voice, while responses from third-party AI options would use another voice.

Apple has many other AI-related changes planned for iOS 27, with details available in our iOS 27 roundup.

The differences between these are meaningless on phone. The trivial distinctions only become apparent in heavy testing or environments that are complicated. Every AI since 2024 can handle anything people need on a phone....except Apples apparently.

I do like the separate voice option. Just to keep track of what is providing what. (Or more likely, which service to be annoyed with.)

I wonder if there will be a way to link your personal instructions to the version of Claude/Gemini on your phone.

Will this features be still capped to Apple Intelligence devices if they will be available for cloud AI services?

I think I'd go with Claude over the others for vague ethical/vibe/feel-better reasons, but I'm already a Perplexity subscriber and would genuinely appreciate that being an option if only for being more consistent.

Not interested in a solution from Apple (not even Apple in this case) supposed to integrate with the OS that is not on-device

So this means that Siri is still going to be next to useless then?

If iOS 27 Siri was going to be a huge Gemini powered upgrade, we’d have no need of Siri AI plug-ins.

Perhaps we’ll get advanced timer setting from iOS 27 Siri - and precious little else.

I do not care about different voices but about Apple stopping ignoring rest of languages as all those models communicate in most languages very well.

Didn't we already hear about Siri Extensions in the past?
Yes, this is a rehash of previous rumors. It makes perfect sense for Apple to do this seeing as how they have given up making a competent in-house world LLM model. This is why they hired away the former head of Google’s Gemini AI division before announcing that Google Gemini would be the foundational model for both Apple Intelligence and Siri.

It also makes sense to add Google’s non-Apple branded AI and Claude to the list of third party AI’s seeing as how Apple is busy neutering Google Gemini 3.1 for Apple Intelligence and Claude is the AI Apple is using in-house for day to day operations.

So Apple Intelligence is just done other company’s intelligence. Is it really Apple anything then?

I’m not even excited for this new Siri implementation and I’m usually first to try everything. I just can’t handle the thought it will be even worse when this all takes place.

Apple I’m trying but your making it exceedingly hard to use your ecosystem for smart home abs AI anything.

They need to not get sued for locking you into just Siri, hence the extensions. It’s a law thing, nothing to do with whatever capabilities the overhauled Siri will have on its own or not.

I don’t have a dog in this fight, I don’t use any AI’s.

Just wish they would give up the option to set something else instead of Siri. The way Apple has flopped on Siri over the last umpteen years, I dont have high hopes that they will get this right with Gemini at all.
