I am looking forward to this function with the 4.1! I have a Parrot system but hate that I can not skip forward or backward.

BTW, what is the usual lead time for actual release once a Beta has been released?

Depends how many issues they find, and if they decide to put more into it, his warranting a 2nd beta... With OSX on the macs, they'll put out like 3-6 betas before the actual release... Just depends how many issues are found and how fast and if they want to put more in before release...

Thanks! Hopefully this does not take too long.

Installed iOS 4.1 beta 3 on my iPhone 4 yesterday and tried it out with my Sony BT3800U headunit. Not working at all. The music plays fine but I've got no control, not even play/pause.

I tested the same headunit with my old Windows Mobile phone and that worked flawlessly so definitely an iPhone problem.

Texting is a very temporary impairment, often 10 seconds at most.
Even in town, ten seconds is a long time. 10 seconds is longer than it took a distracted driver with both hands on the wheel to turn a corner, run a light, and swerve enough to almost miss me, sending me 8+ feet down the road.

At least a voice-2-text system keeps your hands on the wheel, I'll grant you that. Hope this Bluetooth fix enables that for folks.

It's become clear that Apple and the various Automotive OEM's have some work left to do. AVRCP 1.4 has a lot of capability and while the APIs appear to be in the iOS 4.1 beta spec, they don't all seem to be working correctly.

Basic headset controls are enabled and have been validated with a ton of headsets. What's less clear is how much of 1.3 and 1.4 of the profile spec have been fully implemented.

As your username says, give me a break. Text messaging while driving is only being attempted to be enforced because it's a measurable act, much like drunk driving or reckless driving. If a cop passes me or glances at me and notices my repeatedly looking down and away from the road, I could be a whole number of things: eating, changing the radio station, trying to flick a bug off me, looking at my GPS, etc. So when I get pulled over, how is he going to accurately check what was happening without relying completely on my word?

He can't. But he can look at your Sent messages and see if you just recently sent a text.

Texting while driving is as dangerous as doing all of the above. They're just singling this out because they (think they) can enforce it. But they can't. Especially when you have phones that do much MORE than just text e.g. GPS or controlling the music playing. So even if I do have a message recently sent within the past two minutes, I could've just been changing the song at the exact moment he saw me, therefore I got a ticket for nothing.

And to just add to this whole rant, don't tell me that it's more dangerous than drunk driving. Drunk driving has many MANY more consequences than texting while driving. Texting is a very temporary impairment, often 10 seconds at most. Drunk driving is the entire duration of controlling the vehicle. That's like saying walking to get the mail gives you more risk of getting skin cancer than laying out by the pool for thirty minutes.

Great post. Leads me to ask if it is legal for a cop who suspects you of texting while driving to look through you sent messages to confirm said action?

I just hope it works with my Motorola T505 (Skip and Backwards too because Play/Pause works now)... Then I can finally uninstall Music Controls from Cydia ;)

That works for sure. I have that unit.

In Michigan, where the ban just went into effect, they can ask but you don't have to give it to them. If you've got nothing to hide then hand it over. Not showing them doesn't imply guilt either. Its a $100 ticket for a first offense and I belive $200 after that. I'm sure if someone wanted to fight it, even if they were texting, they could probably come up with a good enough explanation that the texts were from 2 mins prior to being pulled over.

In the City of Troy MI, where I work, another more strict ban just went into effect. No using any handset to make or take calls or use in any way, except for GPS and its in a fixed mount in the car. The way everythings written in Troy, using the phone in your hand is a distraction and you'll get a ticket for it. This way the cop doesn't have to prove you were texting at the time. If they see a phone in your hand you're guilty.

I'd have to agree.... Picking up the phone for anything is a distraction... but I still do it. I'm just a little more consious of hiding it and limiting the amount I do it.

Funny thing about the Troy law is that on the City's webpage under FAQs, they say that eating is NOT a distraction under the law and is allowable. I've eaten some pretty messy Whoppers and trying to pick up tomatoes or onions off my lap is at least as distracting as using a phone.

If anyone's interested - http://troymi.gov/ about 1/4 way down the page under Special City Information.

Does anyone using 4.1 beta and a car with bluetooth support have tested if the iPhone sends album art and track info to the car? I believe this is part of AVRCP 1.3 specs.
