I think what people are getting at is that they have the text tone set to "none" and their iPhone set on not silent and SMS still makes sound, but it didn't before 4.2.1 with the same conditions.

Why is everyone here so interested in making themselves seem so much more knowledgeable than everyone else to the point of IGNORING everyone here? If someone here is saying they didn't have the sound Before the update than why cant you believe them? I have had a 3gs since it came out and got the iPhone 4 on the day It came out and I have NEVER ONCE had a sound produced when a message was sent NOT ONE TIME! And if you are really going to try and get on here and tell me, "you must not have realized.." then you have got to be ****ing kidding me. This is new to 4.2 I just updated my phone 15 minutes ago and the first message I sent I noticed it. Please stop disregarding everyone's comments about this issue. It may not be a big deal but it is definitely annoying and inexcusable that they removed the option to turn that sound off. It is a MISTAKE in the 4.2 update and if you don't realize that then please don't add your input to this discussion.
Not trying to seem more knowledgeable, but I'm just saying that the sound has been there since day one of the first iPhone. No big deal, it's not a crime if the guy never noticed it, but that sound has absolutely, 100%, always been there.

That noise has always been there for me across 5 different iPhones in the last 3 years. Although one of my 3GS's stopped making it for a while and that started to annoy me not hearing it, but thankfully it came back & stayed.

Maybe try flicking the silent switch when in a meeting? Surely you would have silent mode switched on in a meeting anyway if any noise in a meeting is an issue/ social faux pas?

I'm on 4.1

I just turned every sound off and set text tone to none.

It still makes the bloop sound when I send and also makes the other bloop sound when I receive.

Moving on...

Sound when sending and receiving txt in os 4

I am with the guy who said the sound is new when sending and receiving texts because it is.
I don't care what the guy says who said him and his wife have had every iphone invented and there has always been that sound because it hasn't.
I have the iphone 3gs and I have always had the sounds turned off apart from the ring tone.
This morning I updated with Ios 4 and the sound suddenly appeared.
I checked my settings and the sounds are still turned off but every time I send and receive a txt today this wooshing sound appears and it is very irritating and I can see no way of turning it off as the sounds are already turned off.

I have a question for all you "its always been there" people. Did you ACTIVELY try and turn off the sound in previous versions? Because when i got my 3gs on launch day on of the first things i did was to remove all noises except the ringtone. This CLEARLY worked for me. Perhaps that was Not an option before the 3gs launch day? Perhaps that was NOT an option in future updates but did not affect my previous setting... Until this one. As others have said it is incredibly rude to say that someone wouldnt realize that their own phone makes a noise when sending a text literally tens of thousands of times. My thoughts are this, maybe the vast majority of update versions there was no option to turn it off(thats why i ask everyone who is saying im wrong if you TRIED to turn it off) but somewhere along the line there WAS an option to turn it off. This must have been when i got my 3gs(point strengthened by the other person who got a 3gs and never had the noise.). The option to have no noise stayed with me through all updates up until 4.2. I swear to you on everything that is important to me in my life that there was never a noise until immediately after i finished the 4.2 update. please stop saying that people are crazy.

Before replying. I strongly suggest that you learn how to use punctuation, click on the reply with quote button to target the person you're speaking to and clean out your ears. When you have completed all the tasks I have given you. Then and only then you can come back and debate over this idiotic topic. ;)

Did you read my post? It is not new for 4.2. There's never been an option to turn it off. Mine and my wife's had with 4.1. ;)

So, it's obvious that YOU are the incompetent one.
Did you read mine? I think not you incompetent duck. It wasn't on OUR phones before 4.2. Could be a Japanese thing because here in Japan we cannot turn off the camera shutter sound either like you can in all other countries. It was the mobile carrier's choice here in Japan (SoftBank).

I personally don't care if it was there or not because either way I can't turn the ***** iChat sound off and all the alert sounds on the iPhone suck balls. Phone is still the best though ;)

I can't shut off text sounds here in the US on 4.1.

Ok to 'know it alls' of the forum: I have had 2 iPhone 4's, never had a 3. So clean slate. When I got it I disabled the sound by either turning off the sent mail or have my tone set to none. But even with it set to a message tone not once have I ever heard the swoosh sound nore have I ever heard anyone I know have it? Could be an Australian default I don't know but whatever, I never had it. Ever since I upgraded to 4.2 (which I regret now) the swoosh sound is present and won't go away. I have tried everything and don't say put it on silent that is ******** I can't have my phone on silent all day. I send like at least 60 texts a day so you can imagine the annoyance of this bull mistake that has happened!!! So I would have noticed it!!! I didn't even know it existed until last week to be honest!! So I'm pretty sure this thread is about how we can fix the problem for those who think it's a problem not those morons who actually think its great to have this sound. So when someone figures out how to get my phone back to the way it was please answer the intended question asked in the forum. Thankyou.

We are not crazy or deaf!

I too have had my iPhone 3Gs suddenly start making noise when I send or recieve a text. As of this post, I have the latest--though, perhaps not the greatest--OS. I am a teacher. I occasionally text my wife during a class when the students are working and have always done so without anyone knowing. Now I can't do that because the phone makes a noise. It absolutely was not there before. Correction! It was there, except that I COULD TURN IT OFF. My wife has not taken any of the iPhone updates. I have compared the Settings-Sounds options on my phone with those on her phone and wouldn't you know, they are diferent. Her phone--again, having never taken updates--allows her to turn that annoying sound off. So, to all you who say the sound "has always been there and you just didn't notice before," I ask you this: In your wisdom, do you really think that so many peaople could, like me, have an electronic device for more than a a couple of years,a device that we carry more often than our car keys, and have that device suddenly begin making a noise merely becasue, in two years time, we never noticed it before. Gimme a break.

I have an iPhone 3G that has categorically been silent sending text messages until I installed OS4.2 yesterday. Now it makes an annoying whoosh every time I send one, rendering my phone unuseable whenever I am in a meeting. It doesn't do it when I send an email, so why for texts?

To those of you that insist their phones have always done it, perhaps so, but it must have previously been an option setting, now it is not. It is just plain rude to imply that other posters are stupid or mistaken because your experience is different.

Exactly! See my post above. The old OS let you turn it off! Those who say otherwise are either missinformed or just trying to sound like they know what they're talking about when, in fact, they don't. I compared my sounds menu to my wife's phone and they are different. She can turn the noise off. I can't. Period. Apple needs to fix this. Noise or no, this is the greatest phone on the planet. They need only fix this noise issue and upgrade the camera (again)...and be the first on the market with 5G! :)

Another voice of reason!

The dumb swoosh sound

First off let me say I am a new member and came across this site while searching how to turn off that stupid noise. I am going on 2 years with having an Iphone 3GS and have always had all sounds turned off except for the standard in call ringing. After updating to 4.2 this am I got the noise that wouldnt go away. No matter what settings you play with it is annoying and still there.

So I pulled out my previous 3gs which took a complete bath about 7 months ago. I swapped sims and hooked it up to my desktop which has 10.4.11 and loaded all my contacts and Itunes. Since I cant upgrade beyond the OS that is on the phone because my computer wont allow any more updates without getting 10.5 , my 3GS is on OS4.0.1.

(my laptop is what allowed me to update to 4.2 - thankfully I have 3 computers and one still on the old OS)

And can you imagine the sounds menu is a tiny bit different but low and behold no more stupid F#$%ing whooshing sound when sending a text.

Now some of you brainiacs on here " I am def not one of them" say it has always made the sound. Well considering I send on average about 5-6000 texts a month and today was the first time it has ever made that noise I would think maybe you all need to pull your head out of the sand and maybe listen to someone. It may have always been available but you had the option to turn it off. Now you cant but thank to a back up phone I dont have to listen to it.

Does anyone know if there is an option to turn off the outgoing sms sound in any of the iOS 4.3 betas? What about if you change the Text Tone to "None"? I'm also one of those that only started hearing the outbound SMS sound after upgrading to 4.2.1.
