Not trying to seem more knowledgeable, but I'm just saying that the sound has been there since day one of the first iPhone. No big deal, it's not a crime if the guy never noticed it, but that sound has absolutely, 100%, always been there. Why is everyone here so interested in making themselves seem so much more knowledgeable than everyone else to the point of IGNORING everyone here? If someone here is saying they didn't have the sound Before the update than why cant you believe them? I have had a 3gs since it came out and got the iPhone 4 on the day It came out and I have NEVER ONCE had a sound produced when a message was sent NOT ONE TIME! And if you are really going to try and get on here and tell me, "you must not have realized.." then you have got to be ****ing kidding me. This is new to 4.2 I just updated my phone 15 minutes ago and the first message I sent I noticed it. Please stop disregarding everyone's comments about this issue. It may not be a big deal but it is definitely annoying and inexcusable that they removed the option to turn that sound off. It is a MISTAKE in the 4.2 update and if you don't realize that then please don't add your input to this discussion.
That's exactly what's happening. There is a bug people. Both camps are correct. Stop bitching about it and send feedback to Apple so they can fix it.I'm on 4.1
I just turned every sound off and set text tone to none.
It still makes the bloop sound when I send and also makes the other bloop sound when I receive.
Moving on...
I am with the guy who said the sound is new when sending and receiving texts because it is.
I don't care what the guy says who said him and his wife have had every iphone invented and there has always been that sound because it hasn't.
I have the iphone 3gs and I have always had the sounds turned off apart from the ring tone.
This morning I updated with Ios 4 and the sound suddenly appeared.
I checked my settings and the sounds are still turned off but every time I send and receive a txt today this wooshing sound appears and it is very irritating and I can see no way of turning it off as the sounds are already turned off.
Did you read mine? I think not you incompetent duck. It wasn't on OUR phones before 4.2. Could be a Japanese thing because here in Japan we cannot turn off the camera shutter sound either like you can in all other countries. It was the mobile carrier's choice here in Japan (SoftBank).Did you read my post? It is not new for 4.2. There's never been an option to turn it off. Mine and my wife's had with 4.1.
So, it's obvious that YOU are the incompetent one.

I personally don't care if it was there or not because either way I can't turn the ***** iChat sound off and all the alert sounds on the iPhone suck balls. Phone is still the best though![]()
I have an iPhone 3G that has categorically been silent sending text messages until I installed OS4.2 yesterday. Now it makes an annoying whoosh every time I send one, rendering my phone unuseable whenever I am in a meeting. It doesn't do it when I send an email, so why for texts?
To those of you that insist their phones have always done it, perhaps so, but it must have previously been an option setting, now it is not. It is just plain rude to imply that other posters are stupid or mistaken because your experience is different.
I think what people are getting at is that they have the text tone set to "none" and their iPhone set on not silent and SMS still makes sound, but it didn't before 4.2.1 with the same conditions.
