I've noticed similar inconsistencies, video playback works from Youtube and Videos, but if I try playing a trailer through the imdb app which shows the playback controls and gives the option for airplay, the video wont playback, just the audio and sometimes that only lasts a few seconds. It shows the current playback track in the lower left on the appletv screen. I cannot playback apple.com videos / tutorials only. Clearing still some bugs to work out.

What a disappointment. Like the others, this was a big selling point for the :apple:TV.

I would also love to be able to view anything on my iPad/iPhone screen via airplay. For instance if I want to share an email or web page on the big screen....

This is definitely where the airplay feature is going. eventually you will be able to airplay any output an app developer wants to specify.

one of many things this will deliver will be gaming on the appleTV, you could simply airplay the video content of the game, while the device your airplaying from (say an iphone) could just show the controls on screen becoming the controller.

considering that keynote will allow you to use airplay to show the slides while you control them on the ipad, this is clearly the next step for them, and will probably be in iOS5.

really I think iOS5 is what AirPlay was meant for, we're just getting it early so developers have some time to build it in and we can test the waters and make sure everything is working. then in iOS5 they will really explode the feature out, probably allowing us to use other iOS devices as airplay receivers (so you could airplay from a phone to an iPad or from a computer to a phone)

While I guess it was never promised from the beginning, i'm dissappointed nonetheless. But I must add that this feature is still far from useless. I come home from work, walk into my house and pickup right where I left off in my car with my podcast or audiobook.

I'm really excited about Pandora as well. It was the one thing apart from Netflix that I really wanted in the new Apple TV.

This is almost like having an audio/video app store. More and more third party apps will support this, so we'll have to be patient.

This seems like a really crazy omission and I'm sure it's simply due to some technical reason that will definitely get ironed out, I bet this gets added in within a few months.

However, in the meantime, does anyone use dropbox? I was thinking you could use dropbox as a workaround pretty easily. Since the dropbox app has the standard media viewer, and allows you to upload content from your camera roll, you could just:

Open the dropbox app, quickly choose the video from the camera roll you want to airplay, upload it, and then airplay it from the dropbox media viewer.

Again this is *far* from ideal but it is better than nothing.

I don't have an appleTV, could someone that does try this and see if it works?

That will work of course, as will uploading it to MobileMe and they watching it. But if I'm going to do all that, I might as well haul out my composite cable and hook it up. Not exactly what I had in mind.

Airplay video playback through dropbox doesn't work...

I really can't believe Airplay is so crippled. How can you not be able to stream videos from the camera roll??

Fix for MobileMe subscribers

This takes a few more steps, but if you have MobileMe, you can sent videos taken from your phone, send them to MobileMe and play them from your Gallery app on AppleTV.

Nice workaround.

Also, just to add that it's now believed (because of Jobs email on the subject) that Apple pushed out this release early because they wanted to meet the November deadline. Full AirPlay support is supposedly coming in the next update in January.

Wow, same problem here. Incredible that they would cripple it like that.

This has to be fixed!!
