Apple's new iOS 4.2 GM comes with a few additional changes. The multitasking bar now adds both Volume and Brightness controls for fast access. Also pictured is the new AirPlay button (on right).

We're hesitant to read too much into this just yet, but there has been one interesting change in iOS 4.2 noted first by a tech company in Southern California. The new MobileMe account setup in iOS 4.2 GM (left) allows you to log into MobileMe settings using an Apple ID. Apple even offers a link to create a free Apple ID right there. Apple ID logins don't seem to work yet, so we're not sure what the intended purpose is. Apple may simple be linking Apple IDs and MobileMe accounts for a consolidated login. However, the a more fanciful interpretation is that Apple would allow any user access to some of the currently pay-only MobileMe features.

Nice incremental improvements. I'm sure some-one on here will complain 'bout them but I like it.

An expanded MobileMe with some services for free would help justify that giant datacenter Apple is building.

Google offers quite a few cloud based services integrated into Android. This might even the score a bit on the cloud services battle front.

I wish Apple would put in quick access to the brightness on the iPhone... looks like the iPad is the only device with enough screen real estate to pull it off.

Guess I'll have to rely on SBSettings to get the job done, but I'd much rather have a real implementation of it.

That's EXCELLENT. I've been wanting quicker access to brightness for a while now. Here's hoping it somehow comes to iPhone, though. Not sure if there's enough space on it with the smaller screen.

I've been using just my AppleID to log in to MobileMe for years. (Since it was .Mac.)

I had my AppleID before I signed up for iTools, and when I signed up for iTools (which later became .Mac, then MobileMe,) I just used the same name as the "before the at" part of my account. It linked them, and I've been able to use just the "before the at" part to log in to MobileMe since before it was MobileMe.

They should be able to put that same multitasking interface with the brightness controls on the iPhone too. After all, the iPad is just a big iPod touch right?

[/sarcasm]

I hope they come through with easily accessible brightness control on the iPhone. Jailbreaking is tempting for a number of reasons, but SBSettings is what always sent in that direction.

please please please give us some kind of Free contact sync. Save me at work from all the customers who don't know how to back up their own phone.

I was really hoping for this! I'd like to have the option to control brightness with volume buttons as well. Rarely do I need to turn the volume down as opposed to silent but brightness quite a few times each day.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

I want it!!!!!!!!!!!

:D

sweet

Does that mean AirPlay will universally work from the multitasking dock?

Same here.

I wish Apple would implement something like SBSettings. WebOS has something like it, tap the status bar and a menu drops down to turn on Bluetooth and wifi etc.

AirPlay and AirPrint are implemented horribly.

AirPlay works in every app (which is awesome). However, it is audio only (which isn't awesome).

AirPrint works with 5 printers. Thats it. No shared printers, no AirPort connected printers.

I am all for the fanciful interpretation. Or at least a way to buy Find My iPhone separately.

Not sure if this is new or has been there all along, but on the iPhone you can now swipe left on the multitasking bar twice to get to volume controls.

Unfortunately no brightness.

AirPrint works with ALL printers that are shared via your Mac if you have 10.6.5 installed (which is still in Beta).
