Back to the original Multitasking transition

I just noticed, they went back to the original multitasking transition (from beta 1).

Just noticed.

Just wanted to add that the Safari tabs button now indicates the number of tabs that are open.

BUT, still Dvorak keyboard layout (WTF?)

Can anyone help- I have a registered UDID but can't find the beta anywhere on the Apple devel site....do I actually have to be registered in the developer program?

  1. Go to developer.apple.com and click on iOS Dev Center.
  2. Ensure that you are logged in.
  3. Click iOS SDK Beta.
  4. Look halfway down the screen
et Voila ;)

I was really hoping for this! I'd like to have the option to control brightness with volume buttons as well. Rarely do I need to turn the volume down as opposed to silent but brightness quite a few times each day.

You should turn on the auto brightness setting. If you have it on and still need to change brightness, maybe it's malfunctioning? I never need to adjust my brightness.

iPad needs multiple user profiles

The iPad is used by multiple members of my family and it would be great if there were separate logins for each family member. Maybe this is a step in that direction.

What exactly are you referring to ("Maybe this is a step in that direction")?

1) RAM is fast compared to flash or and HDD. Unused RAM in a mobile device is wasted RAM, since you have to power it either way. So a good use is letting it cache recent applications in this suspended state as long as active apps don't need it.

Well, what I noticed is that if I leave the recent applications suspended in RAM the battery drains faster than if I close all the apps. So, to save battery life, I close all the apps when I'm not using them. And that sucks.

I have to remove them from the 'Multi-task bar' manually, i.e., close the application - to remove them from their persisted state. Managing a list of suspended applications that are persisted to disk.

No you dont have to! System is doing this. Thats the whole point.

He has a point. The system does do this, and I understand that. But sometimes, it doesn't close enough apps to release the required amount of ram for some games to play smoothly. I don't know if that it the game developers issue or apple's issue.

Sometimes when I try to play angry birds, it is slow and choppy (iPhone 4). I'll open up the multitask bar and remove known ram hogs, like safari and photo/camera and the game instantly speeds up.

Prior to 4.1, I was jailbroken. Running SBSettings, you can take a look at all the apps that have save-states or are running some other multitasking api. Removing them from the task bar will in fact close them off completely.

With that said, I'm 100% positive that when you remove an app from the multitask bar, and there is a saved-state for it, the save-state gets deleted, freeing up ram for other apps to use.

Either Apple needs to recognize the system slowness better and kill off more apps for you so there are more system resources available for the app you are intending to run, or the app developer needs to request more resources that it currently is so the OS will kill off more apps than it normally does.

Okay, I've installed iOS 4.2 GM, but the AirPlay Button is missing in the multitask bar :((

Looks like GameCenter got a little attention too.

New achievement icons and now complete percentages for achievements that support it

they got the idea from jailbroken iphones. but it was so unstable that even SBS settings wasn't enough to make me go back to stock
I have a feeling you meant that even "SBSettings wasn't enough to keep you jailbroken and you went back to stock."

If that's the case, I've found that Winterboard usually causes the most issues. I've stopped using it and I have zero stability issues. Seriously.

Confused

I loaded the new 4.2 GM and I see everything mentioned except the AirPlay. When does this appear? Does it have to see an Airplay Device on the network first?

i don't remember what it was but i would change the brightness via SBS and it would either crash or not take effect. this would usually happen from the locked screen where it would turn off before the new settings took effect.

the themes and free ring tones wasn't enough either. at this point i don't even have custom wallpaper for my PC's. i don't care

Ahh, sorry I misunderstood. I don't have SBSettings enabled for the lock screen so I haven't seen that issue.

Is that a new Airplay icon? Not sure what it is referring to, I like the one used currently in 4.1.

So is AirPlay disabled on the iPhone 3G? It was in the 4.2 Beta 2, but then when they took it out of Beta 3, it looks like they decided to leave it out of the 3G. Or am I not seeing it for some reason? My phone was able to play through my AirPort Express with Beta 2, but now the little button next to the volume bar is missing.

Free AppleID

Can i just clear up this free AppleID business?

As far as I understand it, it's already free to set up an AppleID, as it's what identifies you to the App Store. It's just the extra MobileMe features that you have to pay for. Obviously if you've already got an AppleID, you can use this for MobileMe so the two become linked.

I know this because I tried to set up both mine and my Wife's iPhone up with Game Centre, so we could both compete with each other over our high scores etc. As we are both using the same iTunes/App store account, both our iPhones are configured with the same AppleID.

Each iPhone needs a unique Apple ID to be able to compete with each other using Game Centre, so all I need to do is set my wife up with a new AppleID (which is free) without having to fork out for the mobileMe Family pack.

It would be much better though if Apple introduced a 'lite' version of MobileMe which was free, as it hardly worth paying the premium if you only use a few of the features.

Unique Text tone for each contact

I don't know when they added this feature, but on the 4.2 GM (iPhone4) you can set a unique Text tone for each contact. Finally!!!!

Yep just like in iTunes (it doesn't show up unless there is a compatible device).

I'm running iOS 4.2 GM on my iPad and have both an Airport Express and the new Apple TV. I don't see the new AirPlay button in the multitasking bar or anywhere else in the OS. What I am doing wrong here?
