I'd be really happy if Apple had a cut-down mobileme for anyone with an iPhone (included with the iPhone, if you will), that had Find My iPhone, Remote Wipe, and a couple of other goodies (2GB?) for free. I'd really like mobileme, but all I want it for is remote wipe, which I can probably do for free via my student exchange account...

I've found an issue with Game Center.

If you've logged in on both iPad and iPhone, you'll stop getting game request. I had to log out of both and then back into 1 before request started working again.

Most of you don't realize that Apple .Mac email used to be FREE !

If anyone can complain, it is people like me.

You give people your sole, at the time, email and a few years later Apple starts charging you 100 bucks for it.

Goggle = great
Apple = eff you

I am now off my soapbox.

That just plain sucks. I have no iMac. Only the base station and a MBP. I don't want to wake the MBP every time I want to print a page.

Are there good third party solutions that allow to print directly via wifi from all/most apps?

3rd party solution = HP e-print capable printer

If the orientation lock button on the iPad is still changing to a totally unneeded audio mute button without any other option, I will be passing on installing this or any further updates on my iPad.

Wouldn't really want to lose iMame4all anyway.

AirPlay icon nowhere to be found

I updated to the GM a few hours ago and despite resetting my iPad/router/Apple TV I can't seem to get the AirPlay icon to appear

Is anyone else having this issue?

Could it be that the UK Apple TV's have a different iOS version? (I only suggest this as the UK boxes don't have Netflix and you can't rent TV shows so maybe it's a slightly different version)

I wish Apple would put in quick access to the brightness on the iPhone... looks like the iPad is the only device with enough screen real estate to pull it off.

Guess I'll have to rely on SBSettings to get the job done, but I'd much rather have a real implementation of it.

I'm hoping 4.2 fixes the iPad brightness problem - between its highest and lowest setting there is very little difference but the Books application offers much better range.

"The multitasking bar now adds both Volume and Brightness controls for fast access."

Widgets could be used to accomplish this as well. (hint, hint) :D

Just to clarify the deal with the multitasking bar, that is only new on the iPad, Any device that already had multitasking has the volume controls on their device. I have it on my iPod Touch 4Gen with 4.1 even 4.0 had it as far as I understand provided you had multitasking which the iPad currently does not.

Is anyone else having problem setting up MobileMe mail account in iOS 4.2???

I keep getting 'User name or password is incorrect' error. What the f :mad::mad::mad::mad:

Working fine for me. But I did install the GM this morning.

And I'm getting push email fine though. Fresh restore on the ipad and update on the iphone 4.

AirPlay and AirPrint are implemented horribly.

AirPlay works in every app (which is awesome). However, it is audio only (which isn't awesome).

AirPrint works with 5 printers. Thats it. No shared printers, no AirPort connected printers.

That's not strictly true, when the new build of :apple:OSX comes out, AirPrint will be able to connect to any Mac connected printer.

Am i the only user that would kill to get iMovie for ipad

I suspect there's not a huge demand for it because of the present lack of a camera. Sure, you can get videos sent to you or sync them over, but the average Joe won't have a reason for it. They'll launch it on the day of (or within a week of) the new iPad with FaceTime's launch.

Those apps aren't running. They've saved their state in cache which is why they open where they've left off.
For the record, I've never noticed Angry Birds slowing my 16GB iPhone 4 down after playing it.

I believe they ARE running. Because I can close them one by one and watch my RAM (wired, free, all of it) go up. Isn't that solid proof that they're running and not just in suspended animation?

Also, has any once else noticed that you can fit 20 apps in each 4.2 iPad folder? My iPhone 4 software is still downloading so I'm not sure if it's 4.2 universal or iPad only but it's fantastic. My home screen looks so bare and empty!

UPDATE: iPhone 4.2 is still the same, old, lame, 12 apps per folder.

Damnit Apple. :(

If you swipe once more to the left past the "iPod" controls you will see another window for Volume and also for Airplay!

Just wanted to point that out... (on iPhone 4)

I'm interested: What do you call that bar that contains all running and suspended applications?

( Some may call it a task manager, no? Those applications continue from where I left off... they aren't closed.)

you should really read up on the multitasking on iOS before making ill informed comments. the bar is a fast app launcher, kinda like a recently used apps list. thats all it is, the apps aren't running, they carry on from where they are as when you leave, they go into a suspended state. only apps that are doing background audio, using location services, task completion etc (ie using one of the 7 background API's) are actually still running.

the fact that closing some and you go back into your game and works fine is just coincedence most likely, or a placebo effect. could be coming out the app and going back in just sorts that app out.

My predictions…

Paid MobileMe seems so out of step with all the other free online services out there. Hard to understand why Apple clings to this as a source of revenue. I mean, they're not short of cash. Surely the benefits of making it free could outweigh the short-term loss of revenue.

Here are my (optimistic) predictions:

  • Ping is a mere trifle. Apple has much bigger plans for building a social network that ties into other revenue streams like iTunes.
  • MobileMe will become a free subscription service and will extend the range of features. Some of these will be available to Windows users, but other features and benefits will only work on the Mac and iOS devices, thereby adding value to the Apple desktop and mobile products, and hopefully increasing brand loyalty.
  • Apple will blur the boundaries between MobileMe, Ping and the iTunes store, with a view to creating a huge network of users interacting with each other, the Apple brand, and of course, buying stuff!

I just think continuing MobileMe as this niche paid service for a small portion of Mac users is incredibly short sighted. Something like what I've described above would be good for the Apple brand, and good for Mac users too, as long as we have choices… i.e. no one is forcing us to buy our music, videos, TV, and applications from Apple. But many people would out of convenience, and that is fine. More revenue for Apple, more free services for Apple customers.

That quick access to airplay "iPod icon" on the right of the screen?

If you are someone, like myself, who virtually never uses that function, do you think we could put our choice of other icon/shortcut, that we do use into that space?

I don't really want a shortcut to something I almost never use.

If you swipe once more to the left past the "iPod" controls you will see another window for Volume and also for Airplay!

Just wanted to point that out... (on iPhone 4)

Just been reading all the posts about swiping to the left. Forgive my ignorance - but isn't it actually swiping to the right?

Apple needs to update the apple tv real quick. Apple TV has only 4.1. Read in earlier post that airplay is in all the apps. That's cool! I wonder if some of the apps may update and have that removed, i.e. hulu plus. I wonder, if some of the games are airplayed? If so, how is a game played in terms of controllers. I wonder if apple will announce anything today at this "secret ios conference". ios 4.2 release dates for all ios devices (apple tv, too). ox 10.6.5 release date. Any one more thing surprise?

Why can't they just add this for the iPhone... I'm so sick of the 12 app per folder limit.
