BGR, which reported on Monday that users should expect bug fixes in the form of iOS 4.3.1 to be released in the next week or two, now reports that it has had a few days of hands-on time with the update, confirming that minor bug fixes to seem to be the primary purpose.

But the report also hints that users may be able to sneak a bit more battery life out of their devices with the new update, potentially addressing widespread battery life issues noted under iOS 4.3.
We reported the changes from iOS 4.3 a few days back, and it really does look as if iOS 4.3.1 will simply fix bugs, hence the version numbering. Battery life seems a tad bit better, though that's not scientific at all.
While evidence for improved battery life seems thin at this point in the absence of explicit testing by BGR or others with access to iOS 4.3.1, many users are no doubt hoping that such changes are indeed included.

Despite much testing documented in the thread in our forums, users have been unable to pin down exactly what might be causing decreased battery life. Some have suggested that the Ping functionality from iTunes is at least partially responsible, but others have claimed that turning off the feature leads to battery life improvement that is only marginal at best.

I thought it was just me. I guess I'm not the only one who's phone has been eating away at battery life. I used to be able to go two days without charging. Now it's every night. Same usage other than playing Angry Birds a few times, nothing long.

4.3 was in beta status for so long that one would have thought this issue would have been seen and fixed before shipping.

Hope so my battery life is terrible. I have my phone next to the radio on my desk and the speakers buzz a lot more often, like it does when updating emails but more often. So I assumed that was something to do with the drain.

Same here, I've given up hope on my 3GS, I'm hoping the iPhone 5 (or whatever they call it) will have 2x the battery life...

After 4 years of hearing the same complaints regarding poor battery life (since 2007), I am crossing my fingers and hoping that Apple will finally fix this (non) issue for all (some).

I feel like this is the year of not only the iPad 2, but the Year the battery issue will finally go away.

Ping & New Restore fixed it for me

I was having TERRIBLE battery life after 4.3. Tried the Ping shut-off suggestion after I restored the phone as a new phone, and the combo has given me awesome battery life back! I went from noon until after midnight on a single charge, including playing a couple games for over an hour, web browsing both on wifi & not on wifi, downloading some apps, a few phone calls, texting, and playing around with some apps.

Definitely helped out for me! I wouldn't be surprised if they fixed the Ping bug in this update.

Finally! My battery has been horrible post 4.3 update.

It was at 100% when I took it off charge this morning, barely used it and its already down to 81%

4.3 was in beta status for so long that one would have thought this issue would have been seen and fixed before shipping.

I know... with all software being 100% bug free and iOS being so simple you'd think they would have caught all the bugs. Lazy Apple engineers anyway!

But back in the world of reasonable engineering, I'm glad they've found some bugs and squashed them. Always nice to have bug fix updates. :)

I really hope the update addresses the battery. I never had to do midday charges until 4.3. Three other people have casually mentioned to me that their battery life seems shorter lately, so I knew it wasn't only me.

The 4.3 battery drain relates to push notification. I hope they fix it in 4.3.1.
