One of the oddest things i notice with this is even though im using my phone, the standby time is clocking up and the usage is standing still! Then when in standy both clocks update themselves. Really messed up!

I feel that the battery life is worse since upgrading to iOS 4.3. I'm currently running it down and then going to fully recharge it and then I'll reassess. However, I've never seen it drain so fast on standby before, ever.

Hey guys

iOS 4.3 is causing poor battery performance. Went to bed at 5am this morning and 6 hours later battery has dropped from 100 to 93%. No apps or we pages are running and it had a reboot since I restored the phone rather than just updated.

My phone was jail broken before but all this has been removed. Before battery would drain at 1% every 5mins when in wifi. Now it's more like every 2 mins with a bigger drain when on standby and not doing anything.

I would expect a jailbreak to give poor battery performance but not the new software without it.

Anyone else noticed it? Have I done something wrong?

I had the same problem. I decided to restore it to factory settings, not from backup and manually re-sync everything. It was a pain, but it seems to have done the trick. My battery seems to be back to normal. Although i have noticed that when i launch the ipod, it looks like there's a data connection going on in the background  Apple better release a fix for this.

Ping!!!

So, I turned off Ping by way of previous post, and it seems to have helped. I mean instead of losing 50% of my battery in an hour, I have only lost the normal 1-3%. I am going to stick with this until Apple figures out a solution update.

On a 3GS over here and also experiencing a similar issue. I've gone from 75% to 65% in two hours on standby.

Definitely feels like some program is sending/retrieving data, as when I have the phone in airplane mode, my battery life seems normal (at work, I'm in a big building where reception is bad and battery life WILL drain quickly looking for a signal). Obviously, this is something that needs to be addressed since you can't exactly go running around day-to-day with your phone in airplane mode.

I'm going to try disabling Ping and seeing what happens.

That data connection in iPod is the bastard Ping curse Apple introduced in iOS 4.3. It runs all the time when enabled and wastes battery and data, which is the default. Disable it as per my previous post:

Settings->General->Restrictions->Ping and turn it off.

Man I sure as hell hope that works. It totally freaked me out today. Normally pre 4.3 I can easily get 3.5 days off my phone using my Mophie charger, and today I put my phone down at 63%, 2.5 hours later it was COMPLETELY DRAINED. Couldn't even turn the damn phone on, and the it didn't beep to life when I turned the charger on. Guarenteed I had a lot of crap running in the background, but I normally do so this is not the cause.

I disabled PING and restarted my phone by pressing the home and sleep button until it restarted.

I have NEVER had that kind of rapid drain on a phone ever.

Hi!

I've tried two things that worked for me, until now at least!

I've activated the restrictions for Ping as u told.
Furthermore, dunno if this was present in previous versions, in "Mail, Contacts and Calendar", despite the obtain data for mail is "off", meaning I had push off and manual for data, there is another option inside this, called "Advanced" folder. In this folder, I realized that despite everything was off for mail it was still on!! and continually obtaining data.. I turned it to manual too...

So far I've 10h standby and 30m of usage and 96% of battery... hope this was the solution!!

I don't remember seeing that advanced section in mail before, must be new. Sure as he'll makes it confusing to have that and the regular fetch settings. They should just have stuck with one screen where each mailbox has it's own settings instead of two screens like now. However, if you have the Push set to off, I think it overrides whatever is in the advanced section.

Like the rest of you, I had the same issue. Something was eating my data. My data usage was going up when the phone wasn't in use. I have notifications and location services off as well as push options off. I turned pin off and I erased my home sharing options. That home sharing was the problem. As soon as I erased that my data usage stopped

I turned off Home sharing completely, but every now and then the iPod wants to connect to data. My battery does seem fine though I was browsing/listening to Pandora and my battery took about 45 minutes to get to 95%. That's about how it used to be. I think some of the games that are draining the battery is because they aren't 4.3 optimized yet.

Pretty sure iOS4.3 must have broken my iPhone.

Just did a restore, then made it from new not backup, synced nothing at all, changed nothing except turn off 3G, and it's still making data connections every so often without touching anything at all.

This is causing my usage to go up in standby, and data to go up in standby, thus draining battery.

WHY did I "upgrade", regretting it so badly now, even tempted to take it to an Apple store and hopefully the replacements still have 4.2.1

When people are saying they've turned home sharing off, are they meaning they have no id and password inputted, or is there separate on/off option

I think they mean the option in iTunes. (iTunes>advanced>turn off home sharing. )

I dont see any problem with it. I always set notification and location service on and brightness around 75%, with email pushed every 15 minutes. Its been 3 hours since my last full charge and still 100%. Im using my phone heavily and it will be around 5% in 1,5 days, mostly used for call, gps, browsing and whatsapp.

However when at home I always turn off 3G as Im using wifi instead.

I'm sorry but the numbers you posted cannot be accurate. Even if the phone was asleep for three hours you would fall to 93%.

I think my main problem with poor battery life in iOS 4.3 is to do with the latest twitter app update.

Even when the app was closed (but still in the recent bar) it was constantly checking for location information. Switched it off in the location setting and battery life seems to have improved. It's still not as good as it was in 4.2.1 though.

Hopefully a fix is released soon.

I dunno if you guys are accounting for normal wear and tear on the battery's health... A brand new iPhone's battery is going to perform better than an 8 month old battery; 2% overnight to 6% overnight really seems quite normal to me over the course of a year.

My Macbook battery health dropped 12% in a year :(

I totally agree with you, batteries don't last forever.

Charged my iphone4 to 100% and let it in stand by. Brightness 1/3, 3G activated, wifi disabled, notifications disabled, push disabled, Bluetooth disabled etc
After 4h in stand by = 89% bat WTF?
Apple must do something quickly. Before this update, i used to charge it to 100% before bed and in the morning it was 95%...

I think I found MY issue. I reset my network settings - battery life is now amazing!

Edit - 1% down in 2 hours. That's much better. Will continue to keep an eye on it and report back.

Second Edit - 5 hours later, including some moderate usage (1 email sent (checking every 15 mins), 4 SMS) = 96%

Upgraded to 4.3 on release date and haven't notice any change in battery usage compared to 4.2.

I reset my network settings, turned off ping, turned off location services an I'm now getting more reasonable results that are about what you're getting.

When on standby it does keep using small amounts of cellular data even though it is connected to a wifi network - shouldn't it always use wifi if available?
