Well it seems my problem is solved somehow. I did disable Ping and perhaps my phone also refreshed it's battery memory when it was down to zero. Either way I am happy. Hope everyone else here gets satisfaction. Mac rumors forums are much more helpful and mature than the official Apple website forums. Thanks all!

I still can't find a reason for my usage to go up in standby...

Brand new restore, set up as new, change nothing, after 9 hours in bed, I have 30-60 minutes "usage" on my usage screen.

Gunna either wait for 4.3.1, jailbreaking, or right now I am even thinking of selling my iPhone and getting a different brand :|

I think you should sell it and move on.
Obviously your life is never going to be the same after this update.

I reset my network settings, turned off ping, turned off location services an I'm now getting more reasonable results that are about what you're getting.

When on standby it does keep using small amounts of cellular data even though it is connected to a wifi network - shouldn't it always use wifi if available?

That's what I did. Turned off Ping and Location for Twitter and Home Sharing then reset network settings. Seems a fair bit better. But there's always room for improvement.

And that's about right with cell usage in standby. Unlike the iPod Touch (which has the ability to stay constantly connected to WiFi when in standby) the iPhone disconnects after about 15-30 seconds of being in standby to conserve power and will use cell data until you wake it and it reconnects to the WiFi network.

Disable ping and reset network config worked for me too.

i'm at 90% battery after 7h 44min stand by, 1h 12min light use with push, localization bluethoot and wifi on.

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone experienced different battery stats when you restarted your phone?? Like anything out of the ordinary? For example, I had my phone on the charger this morning, took it off and plugged it back in and it jumped up to 100%. Also, I tried doing a hard reset as someone suggested it for the battery issue with 4.3 and upon restarting it, the battery jumped from 92% to 88%. No real biggie, I just found it odd and wonder if it's happening to anyone else out there?

Dropped from 47% to 44% in about 5 minutes.

Never been entirely happy with the iPhone 4 battery life.

Heres my tip to save battery : turn the percentage off....Does it save battery? Nope. But it does get rid of my OCD.

I have a 16GB 3GS and I've definitely seen a noticeable dip in battery life. I even have Location Service "Off," no push notifications and always use manual email.

Was going to upload these earlier but didnt have access to pc.

What do you think of these usage times/battery life with 4.3? both are with just light net browsing and the 1 at 5% battery was with an hour or so ipod. should i speak to a the genius bar?

I assume that your browsing was 3G rather than WiFi. The iPod use takes so little battery so it hardly counts, and the same for that short standby time, so the two cases look to tell about the same story, namely about 4 hours of 3G browsing. Given that Apple's spec claims 6 hours (http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html) then I'd say that what you're getting looks low, but not so low as to definitely be a fault. If you have your brightness very high or some of your browsing was in a weak reception area then that could account for the shortfall.

I think that you need to do more tests in good reception areas, and tell us what your brightness is, before you can really judge how good/bad your results are.

If you were browing on WiFi however then I'd say that you're results are bad, even if you have brightness at 100%.

yeah was 3G browsing. First pict was strong 3G as was at home (wifi was broken) 2nd, some poor areas.

heres a pict of my brightness settings for comparison.

80% at bedtime last night, turned on Airplane mode. 65% this morning with 10 hours of usage, some app is causing this!

I'm getting concerned with my battery life. So far, I play words with friends (this drains the most), a few SMS, and light web browsing. All on 3G.

I feel like I see my battery percentage go down every 5 minutes of usage (not exactly 5 minutes). Like while I'm playing words with friends, I see the battery drop in percentage.

Battery is at 28%

Time Since Last Full Charge
Usage: 3 hrs, 50 min
Standby: 1 Day, 15 hrs

Call Time
Current Period: 6 hrs, 16 min
Lifetime: 6 hrs, 16 min

Cellular Network Data
Sent 160 MB
Received 1.4 GB

All push notifications are off. The only location service is done on google maps, but I haven't even used it. I leave this feauture on for the mobileme locator.

Is there something wrong with my battery?

I went from 4.1 to 4.2 the day 4.3 releases and i'm seeing crazy battery drain compared to 4.1. Not going to 4.3 for a while.

I will give it a shot in what is happening to my phone.

I am currently at sea with no wifi or 3g.

I tried all of the suggestions recommended and this is what I noticed.

Although with ping in off position I was still getting battery drain.

So when I went to turn off cellular data I noticed that my personal hotspot was in a constant search. Why is it spinning if I am not trying to use it?

I turned off cellular data and personal hotspot disappeared; 3g is on, and my battery stopped draining.

Frankly I am not sure what cellular data does so stupid question - can you still make phone calls with cellular data off? Is it the area that activates tether or something?

Again thanks to all for the pointers on resolving this problem.

Bottom line. 4.3 is a waste of time. 1st day after proper installation, reboot, and charge, my battery drained from 45% down to 10% after a 30 min phone call on edge. Normally would drop maybe 5%. I've moded my a 3g, 3gs, and 4 in countless ways but never had a problem like this before.

No! Bad apple! Very bad apple! I'm going to get the paddle to whip your ass right now!

(BTW, anyone who says anything about capacity decreasing over the life of a rechargeable battery in this thread doesn't know how to read. How did you write? I'm impressed.)

Noticed this too.

Tbh, gunna wait to jailbreak and remove tethering daemons, ping etc completely :)

What I learned from doing battery test is you could have the same settings and the battery usage still won't be the same.

And the biggest drainers to me have been Location Services, 3G, and Push on. I don't use Bluetooth all that much but it drains too. Also, a high screen brightness kills. I keep mine at 50% which is usually dim with the auto-brightness on under low light settings.

WiFi and Edge are probably the least draining with their switch on.

Before you go to sleep, clean up the multi-task bar as well if you can't do it hourly. If you can, use airplane mode alot if you keep it on standby alot. And if you get too OCD with battery life, just turn off the battery percentage. I get like that and watching the battery % closely would sometimes dictate how I would use my phone throughout the day just to do another test. I would avoid listening to my music sometimes if my battery is acting amazing that day. Just try to enjoy it the way you want to use it.

It all varies even with the same type of usage and settings. I can sometimes get at least 10 hours (sans music) and sometimes only 7, 8 or 9 hours if I plan to use Location Services or whatever feature I need that day. Our "normal" days can vary depending what we need to do that day so I expect the battery life to vary just the same.

What is airplane mode used for normally?
