Just to let the OP know, a tethered jailbreak for 4.3 is already out and works fine (I've been using it for the past few days without issue). OP, tethered means you have to plug your phone in to the computer and use software (in this case some terminals commands) to reboot. It's a bit involved but if you're adventurous and can follow instructions to a "t" then you shouldn't have an issue.

I won't link to it. If you can't find the link yourself you SHOULDN'T attempt this jailbreak. Period.

There's nothing wrong with posting a link to a 4.3 JB tutorial...

I haven't seen the official list of fixes in 4.3 but I know there are bound to be a number of (critical) security updates and patches. Apple just released a crapload of fixes for Mac OS and various components ahead of Pwn2Own and you can bet there are a good number of iOS fixes in this release as well. I still say if you do not depend on an unlock, go for it. The jailbreak will come. I guess it depends how heavily vested in the jailbreak scene you are. Additionally there are a number of 4.3 specific features like expanded AirPlay functionality and the new Personal Hotspot. The new hotspot is really nice as it removes the need for MyWi and other hacks and allows a proper WPA2-encrypted WiFi station to be made.

Additionally I'm sure that Apple has fine-tuned the new baseband software as well. They do not publish exactly what they change with each baseband update (beyond the obvious - fix any holes the Dev Team exploited for an unlock previously that they are aware of!) but I'd be willing to bet some hard cash that there are some critical adjustments made which improve the overall performance of the modem and related periphery - allowing better and more efficient communication with the network and perhaps improving battery life and such as well.

hi, one question: When I update to 4.3 will I loose allmy data inclufing apps and songs?

Thanks

...if you don't have a least a little patience Jailbreaking isn't for you.

True that! If you become obsessed with the next iOS, just find a distraction: read a book, find a new lover, begin a bottlecap collection, learn Arabic, study karate...before you know it, there'll be a JB!:D

Has there even been any (critical) security issues with the iPhone? News to me...

Yes.

The last major one was the PDF vulnerability in 4.0.1 which allowed root access simply by auto-loading a malformed PDF. A vulnerability Jailbreakme.com took advantage of and I was the beneficiary of on several occasions. :D

Many of the issues are never publicly discussed or reported by Apple. A lot of things are silently fixed and patched between releases.

yeah if it's a restore. you can just restore from backup once you upgrade. or if you do the redsn0w or greenpois0n route, you will still have all your info on your phone and because you'll simply update rather than restore

Once the jailbreak comes out and you update, will your old jailbroken applications still be there without backing up?

No. The new jailbreak will wipe out everything on the phone. You will need to reinstall any/all extensions and apps on the jailbreak side. Use a program like PKGBackup to make this process pretty painless.

I have my iPhone 4 jailbroken on 4.2.1 but I'm planning on picking up the iPad 2 tomorrow. Is it possible to maintain the jb 4.2.1 on the iPhone AND the 4.3 on the iPad at the same time? I would think iTunes only keeps one or the other.

Of course it is. Firmware is per device, not per machine or installation. You can run whatever firmware you want on each individual device. Just be careful not to jump on that 4.3 update for iPhone (unless you want it!)

Cool. That's what I figured. I only jailbroke a week ago and I already can't imagine giving up Folder Enhancer, Bite, etc. Apple needs this kind of stuff in iOS 5 so bad. Thanks!

Another question: now that 4.3 is out, can a JB 4.2.1 phone be restored to the factory 4.2.1?

Since you have taken the plunge perhaps you can confirm if any Cydia apps work. The word on the street is that mobile substrate needs to be modified to work with ASLR and hence until this is done it is pointless JBing 4.3 since nothing that needs mobile substrate works. My understanding is this includes ultrasn0w so you cannot unlock either.

Yes, but only if you have your SHSH blobs saved for 4.2.1. Apple will (or already has?) close the signing window for 4.2.1 very soon.

Updating from 4.01 to 4.3

I'm somewhat of a noob regarding jailbreaking, so if anyone has some advice for my situation I'd appreciate it.

I jailbroke and unlocked my iPhone 4 (which still has a baseband of 1.59) using Jailbreakme, so I've been at 4.01 ever since. Now, there have been enough improvements that I'd like to upgrade to 4.3.

I've read around about tiny umbrella. Can I use it to upgrade to 4.3 without having to restore and rejailbreak/unlock? Or, regardless, do I need to wait for the Dev Team to complete the 4.3 untethered jailbreak?

Thanks.

Notcom the developer of Tiny umbrella has not yet confirmed if it is safe so I would stay away with 4.3. You can safely use pwnage tool on a mac to get to 4.2.1 but I would recommend waiting before going to 4.3. You also need to wait for a cydia update to fix problems. You will not be able to run ultrasn0w on 4.3 to unlock your baseband.
