I expect this to become part of the tethering package available with iPhones. That's the only way this would even seem reasonable.

just like different versions for 3g, 3gs and 4
oh right right, but I meant like its still the same version, it will still be like ios 4.3 for both of them, unlike where 3.2 was ipad only.

so there will be different versions of 4.3 for cdma and gsm, but they will still both be 4.3.... right?

4.3 is likely bringing feature parity to CDMA/GSM iPhones, I think. They might even be different firmware IPSWs (hardware changes, minimizing IPSW distribution size) but I believe they'll have the same features.

I believe that 4.3 (if it's called 4.3) won't be released before Feb 10th. It would just be weird to seed those features to AT&T users before Verizon users get the chance to receive their iPhones.

So my take is: 4.2.5 or 4.3 being released on Feb 10th and bringing the Personal Hotspot to existing iPhones.

okay that's what I was thinking

K I have a big question! will the cdma iphone have new bootrom/firmware?!

They almost have to do this now that Verizon has the iPhone, especially if they offer it for free. Otherwise it will be a big selling point for Verizon to hit on. If AT&T adds it, they'll hit Verizon on dropping the connection when someone calls. :p

I'll bet its offered to new users with the capped plans or the suckers that converted from unlimited (if that is what you want to call it) to a metered plan.

How quickly does the hotspot thing burn through the battery? I barely get through the day as it is with my 3GS.

If my experience with NetShare and other apps holds true, you will be able to see the meter fall just by looking at the telephone. In others words, you may get through lunch with it it....may

I sure hope this is true and AT&T approves it. The tethering option they currently have is LAME (you can't even use it with an iPad). Glad to see Verizon doing the right thing, come on AT&T do the right thing too.

I'd love to! my actual carrier (three italy) offers tethering for free, so I expect that for free as well!... my iPad would love that.

So it sounds like VZW is going with unlimited data that includes tethering. I don't plan on jumping the AT&T ship, but I hope it makes them re-evaluate their practices and policies on such things. Time to bring back the $30 unlimited package for ALL users, AND add wifi hotspot tethering to AT&T iPhones.

Mobile hotspot capability is definitely a probable deal breaker for many customers giving the cost and hassle of a separate battery-powered hotspot device. It is essential for AT&T to compete on this feature and I would be happy to pay up to $30 extra a month for it (preferably less than that of course).

In Europe many operators allow tethering and hotspots without any extra payments. Even the data costs are MUCH lower then in US and many times without any data limits. There must be some serious lack of competition in mobile communication services in US since its seems everything else in US is cheaper then in Europe. Hopefully iPhone on Verizon brings some healthy competition and consumers will be getting more competitive pricing and better services.

Don't hold your breath

I will gladly give AT&T $40 instead of $30/month of unlimited data if they offer this.

Derek,
AT&T offers tethering now, after much bad publicity. They do not offer a 'Hotspot'. To get tethering, you must pay AT&T an extra $20 a month, on top of your data plan. The option gives you no extra data for your $20. They no longer offer unlimited data, but if you are under an old unlimited contract you may keep it.
If you think $20 is being taken advantage of you are not alone. Cydia sells an iOS tethering app for $10, and there is no monthly fee. You be foolish not to purchase the app if you really want tethering. This is completely reversible and legal. It could not be any easier. If you've opened an iTunes account, Cydia is a breeze.
Pay Attention: you must go to jailbreakme.com on your device, slide the switch to the left and bingo, you are ready to go shopping in their app store. This is completely reversible and legal. It could not be any easier. If you've opened an iTunes account, Cydia is a breeze. Don't steal. It's bad karma. Think of it as the island of misfit toys.
There is a reason the tethering app was turned down by :apple:. AT&T didn't want to support tethering yet, and :apple: gets a large kickback from AT&T's Data charges.
Let the sun shine in

I can see it now:

"Enable the AT&T Wireless Hotspot for $15 a month*.

*In addition, users must have $15 internet tethering feature enabled."

Please prove me wrong AT&T.

As for wifi hotspots, nice feature, but nothing major given tethering has existed for a while. Though maybe time for Apple to give up the ghost in trying to block tethering on the iPad given you'll be able to do it via this? Why not give the bluetooth option and save everyone some battery?

Phazer

So they can save it for later and introduce "awesome and magical" feature called BT tethering on iPad 2? Seriously, the hotspot feature will eat away the battery like crazy. You'll be using both GSM data and wifi all the time when hotspot is on.

Any idea on when 4.3 will be out and do you think that the feature shall appear on factory unlocked European iPhone 4s?

I'll suppose so, otherwise I think we'll see a lot of very unhappy european customers.
In addition is the mobile market in most of Europe dominated by unlimited dataplans, or at least plans with +10 GB data.

I see absolutely no way in which european carriers can find a way of justifying increased prices or the removal of this feature.

lame! .... how do you know?

I mean I understand that having unnecessary drivers would be a waste of space, but seems far better than having two versions of ios

Even though Apple calls both GSM and CDMA iPhones just iPhone 4 they are really different due to the different basebands and chipsets. You should see them like iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4 GSM and 4 CDMA. All different models with different iOS releases. Most likely from end users standpoint iPhone 4 GSM and 4 CDMA will be the same with only slight differences due to different network types.

anyone think of bringing a class action lawsuit against att (or other carriers for that matter) for what they did with decreasing the data but still charging for tethering. ie, they are telling us how we can use that data we are already paying for. this might be something to look into...

right but it will still be 4.3 for both 4 gsm and 4 cdma right?

it won't be split like the ipad used to be?

A class action lawsuit? Oh, you mean one of those things where nobody wins in the end except the lawyers involved?

It's nothing to look into, and that mentality is stupid and a big problem with what is facing America.

AT&T, Verizon, or any other company is free to set the prices for their products and services, along with the terms. You are free to buy into the agreed prices or ignore them.

Nobody forced you to buy an iPhone. If you think the terms are unfair than feel free to stop giving AT&T money.

This would be a great feature for me. When I travel I could just get one prepaid sim and that would support my entire team putting us all on a wifi network. No issues with batteries as I could just plug in one phone and leave that on charge.

I expect in Oz not to pay tethering fees.

This trumps the current USB/bluetooth tethers as I can't use them with my corporate laptop.

Hope this is supported by UK carriers - suddenly there's no need to buy a 3G iPad....

Jailbreaking & Unlocking...

I wonder how difficult it will be to unlock the ViPhone for other CDMA carriers such as Sprint and US Cellular. I know USC can roam on Sprint and Verizon's 3G connections so this seems like it could be doable..

I can't wait til GeoHot or XDA dev team gets a hold of one of these puppies. :D

Next to impossible, at least for Sprint. Sprint will not activate a phone unless the ESN is in their database. In other words, Sprint only activates Sprint branded phones.

I think that from marketing standpoint they will release the both OS versions under the same version number. I don't think Apple wants to create a situation in which one service provider has "newer and better FW then the other" even though in reality the code will be different. Please note that this is pure speculation. However, I would be very surprised if Apple creates a situation in which one network has higher iOS version number then the other. Although, at the release of CDMA model one could see the CDMA model to have newer FW but it is likely that GSM model will have update waiting in the pipeline. Please note that even if CDMA has hotspot out of the box it doesn't mean that GSM has the same feature available without service provider activation.
