You missed the part where if you get the tethering plan, you LOSE the unlimited plan. You can't "legally" tether AND have unlimited data.
It's legal to jailbreak your iPhone though. Buying the MyWi app is legal as well. Unless you go over your unlimited but limited account (5GB) I don't see a problem.

They're evaluating it.... yet they definitely know two things
1. If they don't greenlight it, it's another selling point for Verizon iphones over AT&T
2. If they DO greenlight it, they stand to make a TON of profit from over charges to the non-unlimited data users.

That said, I'm totally expecting this to be available on AT&T.

I can see AT&T trying to charge extra for this even though they already charge $20 for tethering! Ridiculous!

Legal and in-line-with-the-terms-of-service for the contract you signed with your carrier are two completely separate things. If the carrier says no sharing the 3G service to other devices without a tethering plan as part of the agreement, and you disregard that, they are within their rights to terminate your service. No?

Holy crap you yanks pay loads a month for an iPhone! People throwing all sorts of crazy numbers of dollars on this thread!

Maybe some competition will lower prices, or are all US calling plans expensive?
US calling plans have a wide range and each carrier's offerings are slightly different. If you want the maximum of everything (voice, text, data), you'll pay more.

The consumer iPhone plans at AT&T range from $55/mo. (450 minutes, no texts, 200MB data) to $115/mo. (unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, 2GB data). There are probably cheaper enterprise rates.

Note that Americans are accustomed to pay little for the handset which is subsidized by the carrier who requires the customers to sign a long-term contract. That subsidy is offset by higher monthly fees. Neither AT&T nor Apple has ever disclosed the amount of the iPhone subsidy, but industry observers tend to think it's about $350, maybe $375.

Some carriers do offer a less-expensive contract-free plan, but the customer must provide their own phone or pay full retail. I think T-Mobile USA's difference is $10 per month.

Yes... yes you can.
There is no and will never be a law saying you can't.
AT&T doesn't make any laws.
There may be rules against it in your mobile contract, but those clauses in no way make it illegal.
No one is going to jail or court for tethering.

Jailbreaking is easy and for $20 one time fee, get MiWi and you get your own internet hotspot. So yes, I'm keeping my unlimited plan

It's also legal for AT&T to boot you from their network and charge you an ETF.

Using the logical argument with AT&T means they should have offered tethering in 2009 instead of 2010 when every other carrier in the world offered it. And heck, if you are already paying $25 for 2GB of data, should it matter how you use it whether it's on your iPhone or your laptop? Or why MMS didn't come out on the iPhone until Sept. 2009 when phones in 2002 could do it?

AT&T and logic do NOT go together...
Apple erred by not offering MMS on the original iPhone. Their initial stance was "just e-mail the photo." What they failed to recognize was that many phones (even today) have crappy e-mail software.

MMS came to the iPhone in June 2009. It was AT&T who was late to the party, not rolling out the service until September. Many international iPhone customers who upgraded to iOS 3.0 in late June received MMS functionality at that time.

How about managing email better
Rotating screen like iPad (front icons)

Allow adding more images at once to mobileme and creation of gallery(s)

So many other things I cant remember them all

Droid users on verizon can already do this. Welcome to 2007 apple! The iPhone was way cool when it first came out and now it's a joke! I don't know what they're trying to prove....that they don't care?

have a big question! will the cdma iphone have new bootrom/firmware?!

NO!!! It will not! If you actually knew a thing or two about HARDWARE (and stop listening to what apple spits out to the media) you would know that the A4 chip is all that is needed for the phone to be compatible with CDMA. There's not a lot of information at all about that though.

Hmm, you're aware that the Droid came out in 2009 right?

And how is the iPhone a joke? I guess if you consider market domination a laughing matter, then yeah, it's freakin hilarious.

As for me, I'm really hoping that AT&T green-lights this, it would definitely be a selling point and would keep (some) people from switching to Verizon.

Let ATT "evaluate" up the wazoo. Although the current Verizon iPhone leaves a lot to be desired right now, it's great to finally have some competition.

Get ready for some price, feature, and coverage wars, especially when the version 5 4G models come out over the summer. It's about time.

For now, I will continue with my jailbroken phone in 4.1 and MyWi.

To further clarify my point since people seem to have missed it.

"You missed the part where if you get the tethering plan, you LOSE the unlimited plan. You can't "legally" tether AND have unlimited data."

You get their tethering plan (the tethering plan from AT&T), you lose the unlimited plan (you are forced to get the 2GB plan). You can't legally get the tethering plan from AT&T AND have unlimited data. My comment is all tied to AT&T.

Yes you can jailbreak. At least till Apple puts out another update that locks it down again (until it gets jailbroken again). Not the best solution.

Yes you could have gotten one of the apps that had tethering in them before Apple REMOVED them from the App store for violating their terms. Also not the best solution.

so if it has the same bootrom, then the 24kpwn, will still work?

I don't know exactly what you are talking about spiting information into the media, and cdma being compatible with A4 but thanks

and iphone users have been able to do this since the iphone launched in 2007.

and the iphone is anything but a joke!

Pay Attention: you must go to jailbreakme.com on your device, slide the switch to the left and bingo, you are ready to go shopping in their app store. This is completely reversible and legal. It could not be any easier. If you've opened an iTunes account, Cydia is a breeze. Don't steal. It's bad karma. Think of it as the island of misfit toys.

jailbreakme.com? Really? That hasn't worked with the past several iOS releases.

Unless someone is on the buggy 4.0/4.0.1 or a 3.x release and wants a sloppy hack on their phone, there is no reason to attempt to use jailbreakme.com.

My question: Does 4.2.5 slowdown the jailbreaking process? I hope not. I've been waiting to upgrade to 4.2 for quite a while so i don't lose my jailbreak.

I was wondering the same..... but more importantly is not 4.2.5 but the new firmware that will be on the cdma iphone.

I think 4.3 will launch on february 10 or shortly after, for cdma and gsm phones. But we don't know if the 24kpwn and/or the Shatter exploit has been patched in the new firmware.

....

So will we get gsm iphone 5 and cdma iphone 5 in june?! or cdma a little bit later?

I seriously doubt Softbank will permit this in Japan — especially since they have already officially acknowledged that they intentionally cripple the data speeds for iPhone users.

Please, Apple, bring the iPhone to Docomo in Japan.

Quick question guys,

I have an iPhone 3GS with unlimited data plan. Will I be able to tether? I keep hearing AT&T charges $20 a month for tethering and for some reason you can't have unlimited data when tethering? I don't understand. What's this "tethering isn't legal" or whatever? I have the option in my phone to tether. Sorry, I'm confused.
