iPhone 4 restored and updated to iOS 4.3. This is what I did. Erased tinyumbrella from my mac and try to restore but didn't work, got error 1013. Follow the said method to edit the hosts file and try to restore again. Worked like a charm, restored iPhone to previous backup.

same problem here, i've cleared out the hosts and still can't get it to restore....hmmm

Run Notepad as Administrator

Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

Open hosts and just delete the line with "gs.apple.com"

Delete any files related to Tiny Umbrella as each time you open the file, it will add the "gs.apple.com" which prevents your restoration process

I'm having the same problem, but with error code 1013. I do have TinyUmbrella installed, but I just un-installed and rebooted my MBP.

I'm in the process of doing a restore as we speak. Not what sure that to try if this doesn't work. . .

I tried to get to my host file through terminal, but it didn't accept my password.

If you may have had wifi sync on your computer, uninstall it by going to the developers website and downloading the uninstall software. This worked for me. I was hung up for hours before i found this fix!

I resolved my issue to upgrading the iOS on my Windows laptop, then manually replacing and synching everything back from my MBP. What a pain!

For what it's worth - I got error 1013 and solved it with the suggestion above - remove the gs.apple.com from the hosts file.

I did a firmware downgrade in the past (back at version 3.1.something) and forgot to remove the hosts file line once I'd finished.

This is not error 1013! Read again the OP's post, this is error 30xx. 2000 more than 1013.

iphone 4 stuck in recovery

I have tried everything ... I have tinyumbrella, but the choice to restore recovery will not work for some reason.
HELP!

only wish i has seen this earlier!

this is really useful and i finally solved my exit recovery mode, thanks a million!

How to Fix Error Code 1013:

Mac OS X:

Step 1 : Go to your “Applications” folder
Step 2 : Go to your “Utilities” folder
Step 3 : Launch “Terminal”
Step 4 : Type “sudo nano /etc/hosts” (without quotes) and hit return
Step 5 : Enter your password
Step 6 : Use the down arrow key to find the “gs.apple.com” entries. Once the cursor is in front, make sure you comment out the line(s) by entering “#” (no quotes) in front of the text.
Step 7 : Save the file by pressing CONTROL+O on the keyboard
Step 8 : Exit the nano editor by pressing CONTROL+X on the keyboard
Step 9 : Restore your iDevice

Windows:
Step 1. Start –> Programs –> Accessories
Step 2. Run Notepad or WordPad
Step 3. Click “Open..” from File menu.
Step 4. Browse to Windows/System32/drivers/etc
Step 5. In “files of type:” select all documents
Step 6. Open “hosts”
Step 7. Delete all line that has “gs.apple.com” or something like that
Step 8. Hit Save
Step 9. Restore your device.

Terminal Password Problem

I'm having the same problem, but with error code 1013. I do have TinyUmbrella installed, but I just un-installed and rebooted my MBP.

I tried to get to my host file through terminal, but it didn't accept my password.

I had the same problem. It may be because your Admin account doesn't have a password on it. Go into the account settings and assign a password, and then try again to edit the host file.

Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work. After I typed in my new password I get, 'my name is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.'

Thank you I got it to work. As it turns out the normal account I was using was not set as Administrator. I had to go to System Preferences, Accounts, select my account, then check the box to allow my account to Administrator, then I had to restart my MBP.

Now the true test will be to try to do another restore as some future point. Don't want to do it now since I did a manual restore last night after upgrade using my Windows 7 laptop.

As the other posts said using tinyumbrella sets the hosts to Cydia.
you need to reverse this prior to update.
If you update on a mac you wont have this problem.

If you dont have a mac. Pop into apple plug it into a mac and update.
thats what i done.... error 1013

I got the same sort of issue, with the phone being stuck in recovery mode after trying to upgrade to 4.3.
However, when I try to run the restore procedure, it gets pretty far, but then suddenly reports a very non informative unknown error 3004 has occurred

I got mine to restore from error 1013

I have read that some users T.U. and to delete it. I have it on my pc and am running XP and just did the following method:

Windows:
Step 1. Start –> Programs –> Accessories
Step 2. Run Notepad or WordPad
Step 3. Click “Open..” from File menu.
Step 4. Browse to Windows/System32/drivers/etc
Step 5. In “files of type:” select all documents
Step 6. Open “hosts”

Step 8. Hit Save
Step 9. Restore your device.

Ran restore on iTunes and it worked!!!

Whoever found this trick is a freakin saint!

for those of you that are sure that editting the hosts file did not solve the problem (ie: gs.apple.com is not there and going directly to gs.apple.com will give u a 404 apple error page):

download the latest firmware manually from apple - iPhone3,1_4.0.1_8A306_Restore.ipsw

take out your sim card and then shift click restore on itunes.

Thanks, swl7! That did the trick for me. It took me a couple of tries to find the right ipsw file (in my case, I needed the one for 4.3), and I also had to shift-restore with that ipsw file twice in order for it to take, but the second time ended up being the charm.

For anyone who needs it, here's a YouTube video on how to remove your sim card (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmCu0LuMF00), a page where you can download the different ipsw versions (http://download-ios.com/) and some quick instructions on how to do a shift-Restore (http://iphoners.org/update-iphone-shift.restore/).

If, like mine, your iPhone didn't come with the little, metal gadget that lets you pop out the sim card, you can use a very thin paperclip, or anything similar to engage the pop-out.

Thanks again for the help! It wasn't the end of the world...it just felt like it for a little while ;)
