I'm sorry I've never done it myself since my my 4S was the first device I jailbreak. I'm sure someone else with experience will chime in.

I hear you - thanks anyway. Just curious as to whether there is anything that I need to save now to prepare for the eventual cessation of Apple signing 5.1, other than have my SHSH blobs saved via Cydia and RedSn0w (still curious about the partial blobs saved thing, though).

Thanks again!

I keep reading that you need to save both the SHSH hash file and the APTicket. To check if you have both you can use Reds0w > extras > query (I think) and it'll tell you if you have both or not. I'm not sure what a partial blob is and I think Apple already stopped signing 5.1.

That was fast.... Thanks, though.

I haven't confirmed it myself since I don't have a device I don't mind having to update to 5.1.1 if this is true. Someone on the dev team blog said they tried it with their iPod. I think it's usually only a couple hours until they stop signing the older firmware but I could be wrong.

Sorry - assumed A4 device. My bad...

Any ideas on how us A4 guys can resore to 5.1 after Apple stops signing it?

yah I have a 4s... sorry forgot to mention that a5 and a5x devices effected.
so some people might have a delima on whether or not to update now or wait it off. And I myself haven't done a shsh blob saving technique before. Sounds pretty simple for iPhone 3g-4 tho

I have a feeling that a jailbreak will be uploaded by FRIDAY (fingers-crossed).

This may be a dumb question, but what happens when a device needs to reboot after 5.1 stops being signed?

"The LLB and iBoot stages of the boot sequence are being refined to depend on the authenticity of the APTicket, which is uniquely generated at each and every restore (in other words, it doesn’t depend merely on your ECID and firmware version…it changes every time you restore, based partly on a random number). This APTicket authentication will happen at every boot, not just at restore time." (From http://iphoneblogr.com/2011/06/apple-making-it-more-difficult-to-downgrade-firmware-in-ios5/#more-4692).

Does this mean that at each boot up the APTicekt is authenticated by Apple? If so, will those that are on 5.1 running a tethered JB need to save their APTicket while 5.1 is being signed, or lose their JB when they reboot the phone?

I may be reading too much into that, and I realize it's now an older post, but thought it was worth mentioning.

Thanks.

Don't worry, it can still reboot. I am on 5.0.1 and have rebooted dozens of time :)

I think the checking at every boot just means that the blobs stored on your phone are checked. Certainly nothing is checked with Apple when you reboot.

That's good to know. I'm still curious as to whether there is a write up, etc. with instructions on how to make sure you have everything you need to downgrade to 5.1 if needed, though.

Sounds llike we'll have a jailbreak for 5.1.1 almost immediately (already do, but the particulars of NO_BB iPSW, etc. aren't on the tutorial sites yet), but I'd very much like the ability to downgrade to any firmware necessary...

Here is a little tutorial I wrote to restore/upgrade to 5.0.1
Now that 5.1 is no longer signed or about to not be signed any longer, restoring to 5.1 will require the same procedures.

Works for A4 devices and older.

Great write up - thanks! I guess my confusion is centered around saving the APTicket. Is that done through RedSn0w, or only iFaith? I have saved 5.1 SHSH blobs, but I don't recall seeing a write up for saving the APTicket for 5.1 on iClairified or elsewhere... Maybe it's not written up yet because 5.1 was the current iPSW until yesterday.

Thanks.

.:D

It is done automatically in all the updated apps.

Wait - really? I was under the impression that saving the APTicket is something you have to actively do, like saving your SHSH blobs.

So if I've saved my blobs w/ RedSn0w, I should be able to retrieve my APTicket if I wanted to restore/downgrade to 5.1?

Edit: Well I'll be - just checked RedSn0w under verify existing blob files, & navigated to the plist where my blobs are saved & a message pops up saying that blobs & APTicket are there... Thanks for the clarification Dhlizard!

One other question about your write up; You mention that TU hides the hash file, and you have to use terminal to undo this and copy to the desktop. I used a Mac and RedSn0w (no TU). Is this step still required if I can already navigate to the plist w. my blobs (in Pwnage folder on desktop, then in RedSn0w folder)? If I don't have to navigate via Terminal, do I still have to copy the plist to the desktop to do the restore?

Thanks again.
