A5X for the "new" iPad 2 with same resolution
A6 for the "new" iPad 3 with the retina display

This would account for the supposed price hike in the iPad 3

Not really. At least, not by itself. The A6 wouldn't be much more expensive than a supposed A5X. Maybe a few dollars. The big increase would be the cost of the new display.

You Can call me stupid or whatever, but i gotta ask what is this "Multi-User" thing and what does it do? :)

iPads are often used by a whole family. Currently you cannot set up an iPad so that each person sees their own email / settings / etc.

If there is a price hike I'm gonna postulate that it's because of the ripple effect needed to cover the enhancements.

HiRez screen
More RAM
More Battery

Dreamers ... you get a A5X in iPad ... A6 ... comes in iPad 4.
iPhone 5 will have an A6.
iPad with Retina Display is enough reason to buy iPad (you will see).

It's Tim Cook leading and he will get the maximum money out of you!

First post that i is think is right. A5x will be in the next ipad. The a6 will be in tbe next iphone and im sure they r testing it so thats why its coming up ib the strings.

This rumor is concerning. I knew that my hope for bigger storage size of 128GB won't happen, but I really hope we don't get short changed with CPU after what happened with iPad 1 and iOS 5 (main reason for upgrade not retina display for me). We need a good CPU and 1GB RAM to keep using iPad3 beyond iOS 6.

It's pretty crazy that my $900 toy (after tax) only lasted 2 years.

I guess you never had an iphone 3g on 4.x.x. Apple wants you to upgrade buddy. $$$$$$$$$$$

You Can call me stupid or whatever, but i gotta ask what is this "Multi-User" thing and what does it do? :)

No prob, Multi-User would means you can have different user profile. If you share your iPad with your wife, you have your emails, calendar, contacts, etc... but she can't. Or you have to merge both users together but each one has access to all info of the other... no good if you share it with your kids.

Having Multi-users would be like OS X, you can login with a Profile with your email, calendar, photo, contacts, etc... And if you logout, someone else can login with another user profile with different setups, differents emails, calendars, etc...

It's not really useful for iPhone, but very useful for iPad... That's what I'm waiting for the iPad 3 for instance.

But I think Peace is right and it should appear for WWDC... it would make sense.

Regarding the A5X and A6, I wouldn't be surprise also that Apple wouldn't release any "small iPad such the 7.85 I would love", but would only keep the 9.7" size only...

A5X with regular 1024 x 768 screen for 720p model such the iPhone and iPad 2 (that could become the entry model)

And the A6 for the 2048 x 1536 for the 1080p HD models such the iPad 2HD/iPad3 (whatever the name will be) and the Apple TV.

Maybe... just my 2 cents :)

My guess:

The Retina iPad uses the A6.

A 7.8" iPad with a 1024 x 768 display uses the A5X.

The sizes help differentiate the 2 models.

Reasonable guess on speculation of 7.8" iPad, and you get shot down.

That board with A5X, was it a different shape then the iPad 2 board?
If it was same, then maybe it was for new iPad 2, 2S?

Stop the wishful thinking people, the most logical is:

IPad2 stock leftovers sold as refurbished
iPad 3 or 2S with A5X ready for production, the A6 probably is still in prototype status.

LOL why would the A6 be in prototype status? If it's a Cortex A9 based product it was ready months ago.

A5x will be based on the a9 and the a6 will be based on the a15. The a5x will be quad core. Theres enough clues that apple has left around....

People don't want multi user iPads. They want their own iPad and for other people to stop asking to use theirs and go buy one for their self.

This is why I think a 7.85 iPad isn't crazy. A lot of parents bought their kids Kindle Fires because it was affordable.

Apple's not going to do KF pricing but they can pretty much eradicate the higher end iPod Touch that few people buy and replace it with a $349 iPad mini.

I'm fine with whatever Apple wants to call it so long as the iPad 3 has a Quad Core. At that point it's just semantics on if they want to call it A5x or A6.

That's incorrect really.

What I said wasn't incorrect at all. I said that Apple doesn't use the latest tech simply because it is the latest (as some companies do). I never gave a reason for their thinking. That reason being some of the same things you mention. Apple it seems, weighed the costs to the user of including such tech against the whole "we have the latest new tech in our products" spec wanking and decided to put the customers first.

That's true but quad core isn't really spec wanking IMO

I have a feeling Apple will have a trick up their sleeves at the March 7th event.

I think one of these situations will come true:

1. iPad Mini alongside iPad 3, priced at $349
2. Apple TV, whatever that means
3. All-new Macbook Pro
4. Aperture/iPhoto/MS Office for iPad

If a quad core processor doesn't have a noticeable advantage or comes with a severe disadvantage to the consumer and is included simply because everyone else is doing it and it is the latest thing, then it is spec wanking. regardless of your opinion

You misread my post :)

"A6 for the "new" iPad 3 with the retina display

A5X = Cortex-A9 dual / quad core for iPad 3

A6 = Cortex-A15 dual core for iPhone 5, which would mean a release not before October

Opinion are ideas that cannot be backed by factual evidence.

This doubled density leads to equal power in chips half the size, or alternatively double the power from the same sized chips.

Standard for processor design. You either clock the chip higher within the same heat envelope or add more cores.

Thus there is little to no regression in battery life yet Apple now gets more pipeline stages and execution units to leverage with OpenCL and Grand Central Dispatch.

Apple isn't in the habit of mixing realms so any March event would be either iOS focused or Mac focused. And as there is unlikely any major reason to have a Mac event I would say that #3 if and when it happens will be a silent release. Same for any Mac computers

As for the rest. Apple has already made their comment on an iPad Mini. Folks need to get over this notion that that was Steve's opinion and his alone and Tim will kick that to the curb and do whatever he wants now that Steve is dead. it is unlikely to prove so. Any 'iPad mini' will be merely a continued availability of one or more models of the iPad 2 akin to the continuation of the 3gs after the iPhone 4 was released.

Apple only includes third party apps in their announcements when they can be used to highlight some new or vastly improved spec of great benefit to the consumer and they have nothing of their own to show off. So it is very unlikely that they would feature MS Office for the iPad during an announcement.

The only one that I can see as viable is the second, which is that they could release a revamped Apple TV at the same time and perhaps will include it in an event if such an inclusion shows off integration between the two (improved Airplay and what not)

I'll guess that #3 won't happen, as it's an iOS event. They may spec bump some of the Macs on the 7th, but they won't talk about it at the event, just release a new models when the store comes back up. Even that seems highly unlikely.

I'd say #4 is a 50-50 for Office. We've seen the leaks, and denials, so it has a good chance at getting a brief demonstration. I would also say there's a slight chance for some other Apple app to make the jump - iPhoto seems like a good bet if the iPad 3 has a much improved camera.

I have a feeling that the Apple TV is going to be updated. Whether it's just a small bump to the A5 SoC, enabling 1080p support or a full fledged new product (that is to say, an actual TV) I haven't got a guess. Could be both. I could see Apple doing a new AppleTV with slightly bumped hardware (A4->A5) along with lots of new software features and then offering it as a 30", 42", or bring your own TV model (what they have now) or something/

As for #1, I have a whole host of theories. I would put money on there being 2 distinct models of iPads this year. Most likely, they keep the iPad 2 around as a low price into model; possibly like the iPhone 4, offering it in a limited storage capacity model only. Say 16gb iPad 2 at $399, 32gb @ $499, then jump to iPad 3's at 32/64/maybe 128 at $599/699/799, or something.

But, I think there's a decent chance there will be a completely new device as well. An 8" would be ideal for me, and at $349 would probably destroy the Kindle Fire, the only credible iPad threat thus far. Or, perhaps an iPad 2S with a slightly modified SoC and feature set slimming it down even more. If the iPad 3 is going to get bigger then perhaps it would make sense to do an "iPad Air" line that is even smaller, at the expense of some features. (though, in that case, I would prefer the iPad Air to be an 8" model).

Either way, I'm pretty excited about next week! I've been rocking my iPad 1 since launch day and it's due for replacement. I'm going to be handing it down to my 4 year old for his birthday (with an Otterbox!) on the 6th regardless, so I'll be iPad-less (sort of - I have a first gen from work as well :p)! If they do an 8" model I will be pre-ordering... if not, I might hunt for a good deal on an iPad 2, or maybe even check out the Kindle...
