when it's time for a complete upgrade (OS 2-3, 3-4 etc) I've learned to always set it up as a new phone...has never failed me yet.

The one time I didn't, the phone was crap (battery life, apps lagging/hanging).

Big problem is you cannot turn off Push AT ALL, even with everything off, I couldn't get rid of the push connections - you can see them using the NetStat app.

This is a BIG deal breaker for me, on 4.3.3 I have no connections at all and really nice battery life since I don't use any push.

iOS5 feels like a jailbroken 4.3.3, with s bunch of battery draining fluff added in

They still haven't fixed that! Glad I'm not touching this til the fall.

BTW are ALL you folks devs or what?? Many of you seem to have iOS 5.

I'm a dev, but many on here have gotten added to dev accounts. Its all beta of course, so any complaints should be taken with the knowledge that its a very early beta.

It's not that difficult to either obtain a developer account or have access to one. If you want to run iOS 5, there's plenty of ways to have it today.

hm I thought my battery was poor, but I accidentally fell asleep with my iPhone 4 playing slacker over 3G (wifi and BT off). I distinctly recall at 11:10pm, it was at 25%. This morning at 7:20am I thought the phone would be dead, but low and behold it was at 1% and still trucking. I let it play until it turned off. So 8 hours of 3G music streaming with headphones seams...unreal? Although (as I posted in a different thread) I let my partner's phone with 4.3.3 play slacker with headphones for 1.5 hours and it only lost 6%, so this is consistent if not better (4%/hr vs. 3.1%/hr for iOS 5).

I wouldn't have a problem setting my phone up as new, however I loose all the stuff that's in my camera roll and I CAN'T put it back there. I can only sync it to a folder. My text message conversations are also lost. So I really don't see the point.

I did turn of the weather locations service per the suggestions here. I am going to go the day with it off and see how it goes.

Totally agree. I ended up taking my camera roll and syncing it as an album and starting with a clean roll. As for texts, I started fresh there too sadly, but I used a computer-based app to extract my SMS database and save it as a PDF so I have that log saved for important messages I wanted to remember.

I've restored from backup as well rather than setting up as a new phone. From Settings/General/Usage the iPhone 4 "Time since last full charge" is at 3h56m usage and 22h15m standby with 32% of the battery remaining. Push and notification services are enabled for just about everything with wifi on and bluetooth off. Unfortunately I don't know what my iOS 4 numbers were like though I'm pretty certain they were better than this. ;)

Wiping the phone clean wasn't an option for me, so I went back to 4.3.3 and jail broke it. Will wait for a beta that's a bit more usable.

For what it's worth, deleting my iCloud account from the phone (and thus, turning iCloud syncing off) has returned my battery life back to the performance it had in iOS 4, if not better. I am still syncing my stuff via MobileMe, however, with no issue.

You'd think that there wouldn't be a difference, but there must be something new in the iCloud syncing protocol that has it constantly checking for changes or something along those lines. As soon as I disabled iCloud, my battery was back to having great life again. For anybody that's having battery issues, I'd suggest trying this and seeing if it makes a difference.

I'm sure this will be fixed in a future beta, but for now this seems to be a good workaround option.

If i continue to use this beta will it permanently damage my iphone's battery?

Yes. It will start to smolder and the next time you send a txt message, it will burst into flames as if it was possessed by Satan himself!

Short answer: No.

I also did the same thing. Yesterday my battery held up pretty good, only lost about 5% overnight. This morning i turned on my automatic syncing in the Store under settings (worked flawlessly by the way) but throughout the day it crushed my battery, ran hot too. Turned it off a little bit ago and seemed to stabilize.

No, it might shorten it's life by just a tiny bit but nothing significant. The only reason it would shorten its life is because you will doing more recharge cycles.

To get similar battery life to 4.3.5:
Turn off ping
Turn off system location services
Turn off and delete icloud account
Turn off Bluetooth (it's on by default)
Set up iPhone/iPod as new
Turn off find my iPhone
Don't let weather widget use location services
Log out of gamecentre(it's logged in by default)

Some more...

And here are my settings/recommendations ......

1. Setup as New Device and no restore from backup (normal users may not like this)
a. On Current iOS, Erase Content and Settings
b. When on new setup screen, connect to iTunes on PC
c. Go to DFU mode (long press power+home)...when screen goes blank, leave power button but keep home pressed till iTunes on PC tells u that there is a iPhone connected in recovery mode)
d. Use shift+Restore to select new Beta ipsw
e. As soon as restore is done on new setup welcome screen, disconnect from PC iTunes
f. Setup normally over WiFi (DO NOT RESTORE FROM iCLOUD)
g. Once on home screen follow below steps (2-6)
h. Do a Hard Reset and u should be good to go

2. Under Restrictions (enable it) ... turn off Ping (iTunes also if you are outside US)
3. Under Location Services u can disable System Services like Timezone/iAds/Anonymous Usage
4. Go to weather app and turn off location. Set it manually
5. Turn off WiFi and Bluetooth when not using
6. Turn off PUSH and set it to Fetch 15 Mins (Hard Reset after this especially if you are using iCloud account)

I did the above steps on Beta 4 and 5 and seem to work fine for battery. If I didnt do the above, I was getting about 4-5% drain in an hour. With the above steps, I get 1-2% on normal usage.

Hope it helps some of you !

UPDATE : I re-enabled push after running the phone on above settings for 6-7 hours and amazingly, no battery drain ... I suspect the iOS Beta need a few hours to settle down after flashing

My iPhone battery drains so fast, watching the percentage of battery left is like watching a digital clock's seconds tick off. This sucks big time. The iPhone 5 has half the battery life of my prior iPhone 4 and that is being extremely generous.

You might want to check time stamps before posting on the next random thread you find. (As this thread has been dead for a year.) Props on using the search function I suppose, though.
