Hi Everyone,

I installed the GM release of iOS 5 on my iPhone 4 and things have been working pretty well for now. For the record, I am not jailbreaking my device for now (though I plan to in order to run My-Wi when I go on vacation next month to share my connection with my MacBook Air).

While iCloud is not enabled yet (I am not a developer) I can't get photo streaming to work, and of course iWork and such won't be updated until the 12th. Since I don't have a compatible iTunes version, Wi-Fi synching is also a no go yet. So those things will resolve themselves soon as the official release launches.

However, I have noticed a few bugs or unexpected changes in the software which look like will be around until at least iOS 5.1. I was thinking maybe we can start a thread to keep track of issues and any workarounds to resolve them.

Here are the issues I've had:

ISSUE 1: When previewing a podcast in iTunes, the minute I lock the phone or go back to the home screen the preview stops playing. This is annoying because I used this to get around the 20MB over 3G limitation when listening to podcasts on the go. (When the phone won't let you download the podcast because its too big, you can still listen to it via the preview button.)

I was typically able to hit the preview button on a 2 hour long podcast, close the screen or even go to another app, and just stream the whole thing over 3G in the background. Now it seems this will be very inconvenient if not impossible to do.

ISSUE 2: For some reason I occasionally get a message that says I am not subscribed to any cellular data service. This is incorrect, obviously. Also, it doesn't seem to impact my ability to get data. (Despite this message coming up in the middle of a browsing session, my websites load as normal and I am able to get e-mail, etc.)

I am hoping this may be resolved with a carrier settings update in the near future.

ISSUE 3: When I tried to play anything in the music app it just wouldn't play. I would select a song, hit play, the button would turn into a pause button but it would be stuck at 0:0. Even if I moved to another point in the song, it would just be stuck on that point and not move. Toggling between Pausing and Playing repeatedly did not help. No songs or podcasts or any audio files would play.

Luckily, this was immediately resolved by just restarting the phone. It only happened once for now, but I am hoping this was just a freak thing and not a recurring problem as it would get annoying to have to restart the phone that often.

Especially if one is relying on a tethered jailbreak, if this issue did come up you'd basically be stuck without being able to play any music on your phone until you got to your computer. That would really suck if you are out on an all day trip.

ISSUE 4: Trouble downloading podcasts. I tried to download a podcast and it would get to about 12KB and get stuck. No movement for a while. Maybe this is just the particular podcast, but I have never seen this happen before and it never happened even on this podcast (well not this specific episode, but same podcast) on iOS 4.X.

Also I noticed a podcast appeared in Music, but when I clicked on play it said I needed to be connected to a Wi-Fi network to play it. I believe this means Music app shows podcasts as available before they have finished downloading. Before, only once a download was finished would it appear as available for listening.

I have double checked this, and this is indeed what happens. As soon as you hit download on a podcast it appears in the Music app as available for listening despite it not finishing to download yet.

ISSUE 5: Battery Life. The battery life is taking some hits due to bugs in the software. I am pretty sure its bugs or glitches because while typically battery life is the same, there are some times when one of the issues mentioned above happens and the battery starts draining quickly.

(I am also not using the reminders app yet, and I know thats been another common complaint regarding its effects on battery)

For example, I tried to download a podcast and it was stuck on 12KB for a while. In just a matter of about 15 minutes the battery went from 100% to 93%. Pretty quick drain. Weird considering that the radios must have been on but no data was being transferred.

Also, at another point in time I had turned the phone off with 98% battery and when I turned it back on I had 96%.

I think that's all the issues I can think of so far. Everyone who is running the iOS 5 GM feel free to chime in!

I also think that Apple should provide a way to disable the 20MB limitation over 3G. I think instead of a prompt saying connect to a Wi-Fi network to download this, there should be a question instead. "This file download is XXX MB big. Would you like to proceed with the download or wait until you are connected to a Wi-Fi network?"

I pay for my data (not unlimited) so if I want to eat up some of that I should be able to rather than be forced to look for a Wi-Fi network.

Why don't you submit a bug report at the developer's website instead of posting it here.

i don't know if this is a bug or if its something I'm doing incorrectly but whenever i change the song details or album cover art for songs on my iPhone it doesn't immediately change on the iPhone for some reason like it used to on ios 4

some changes do occur but for others they're still unchanged on my iPhone, any help here?

thanks

Did you even read the post? "I am not a developer."

Anyway, I have found a few issues with the GM;

  • iMessage settings are still very glitchy. Particularly concerning activation (which ocassionally takes an unacceptable amount of time), and display of methods of communication. I have had trouble on both 3GS and 4 getting my phone numbers to appear as ways to contact me.
  • iCloud asks for my password every time coming off charge. This has never happened in any of the previous betas.
  • Game Center is causing considerable lag upon login, which has seemingly got progressively worse throughout the beta period.
  • Personal Hotspot has just disappeared. Resetting has not fixed it, nor has a fresh install. My guess, in agreement with the others, is a carrier update will be needed to remedy this. Perhaps Apple are again trying to tighten the ability to use Personal Hotspot.

Something else I find mildly annoying is that Apple never did deal with any of the issues I wrote about in June regarding Notification Center. The first one at least certainly should have been sorted.

Aside from these bugs and mild annoyances it really is hard not to love iOS 5. I've been using it from beta 1, and the improvements have been frequent, well executed and stable. With these few issues addressed, I'll be even more impressed with where iOS is going.

No issues here with verizon

1) Notification center only shows Calendar entries 24 hours in advance. This needs some options like 1 week, 3 days, 2 days in advance. 24 hours is not enough.

2) Reminders by location (geo-fencing) is not working. This might be because iCloud isn't enabled, but somehow I doubt it.

3) Flags in Mail don't behave properly with Gmail. Flagging/unflagging an email just keeps toggling an email as read/unread. If the idea of flagging can't be applied to Gmail the option should be removed if it's a Gmail account.

4) More of a gripe... but... Reading List is ok however it appears to be nothing more than a bookmark with some extra info (blurb about what the bookmark is). Maybe this is more useful with iCloud? I haven't done any research on it, but really it should be available in a browser too... and not just Safari.

That is user controled in the notification center- you can modify to not repeat

You are understanding it wrong.

Whenever the first time some SMS comes, phones buzzes twice or thrice. Where second chime is heard even before first chime is completed. The first chime gets cut abruptly.

Eg. if its supposed to sound as Tring, it sounds like Tri-Tri-Tring

It's a bug. I know what notification centre setting is and have also set it not to repeat. I also restarted the phone. It stopped for sometime but started again randomly.

I read it, but if you're gonna go into this much detail about bugs pay the $99 and stop being cheap A$$es!

Dude what's your problem? Maybe he has other things to spend his money on. All he's doing is trying to help.

Issue 1. iCloud email isn't pushing. I have to open the app for it to be receives. Possibly an iCloud server issue, rather than iOS 5

I noticed it was also not pushing my Gmail accounts either. But I was just trying to see if it worked, I don't actually rely on push so after the first few minutes (as I was staring at a new message in Gmail on the desktop) I just turned push back off to conserve battery. As such, I am not sure if it was as freak thing or a consistent issue.

After some consideration, I decided not to join the developer program since I am not actually a developer and I like having a fully functional phone (for me, it would be VERY inconvenient, though not crippling, to be stuck with a beta build that keeps crashing for example).

That is why I waited until the GM (which is the final release that will be pushed to all users in a few days) to upgrade since this SHOULD be a stable enough release. I don't RELY on any 3rd party apps so I wasn't worried about those. I mostly just listen to stuff on it, check e-mail, and use Safari all of which are built-in functions. I use some 3rd party apps but not many and they are not "essential" for my work (I actually have just two screens of apps).

If someone has a developer account and wants to submit my post, that'd be great. One reason behind documenting everything here is so that other people who are not developers can make an educated choice on whether or not they want to upgrade yet by seeing some of the problems they can expect.

The other purpose is to give each other advice and workarounds we have discovered, which I see has been happening already and is great.

AirPlay is buggy.

Scenario:
1. Play song in Music.app with AirPlay enabled.
2. Open Skype or any app that interrupts music playing.

Result:
a. Music will switch from AirPlay to play on the device.
b. Trying to get the music back to AirPlay device after exiting Skype will be hell.

iMessage is disabled if the camera is disabled, presumably because disabling the camera disables FaceTime. iMessage and FaceTime shouldn't be inextricably linked to the camera status.

I have the camera disabled due to working in a defense plant.

1. iCloud email not pushing (already stated in this thread just verifying I have the same problem also)

2. Clicking a link opens a new tab but site does not come up. Just a blank tab. Have to hold link and click "Open in new tab". Haven't tested on iPhone as sold it but this happens on my iPad with GM 5.0 installed.

Other than that everything seems to be working wonderfully.

- The number in the calendar icon on the homescreen doesn't update to the corresponding day if the phone is in standby overnight.
- When you get a notification of a new email, the mail app crashes until you clear out the notification manually from Notification Center.

Safari crashes. Opening Safari, you get the screen slide up that shows you the bookmarks you can open, hit DONE and Safari crashes. It's not easy to replicate and seems to vary. It has happened several times to me. I can get around it by setting Safari to private browsing or cycling my phone.

Either way, it's a minor issue.

Safari closes right after loading

i am also having issue #3. However, a re-boot or re-sync is not solving the issue at all. iOS 5.0.1, hurry up!
