OK

So I have been getting the 3194 error when trying to update my iPad 2 to iOS 5 Beta and finally got it to work.

Make sure your "hosts" file matches the data from this link: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3083715?start=0&tstart=0

I had 64-bit W7 and had an entry at the bottom of my host file that wasn't supposed to be there. After I deleted it and restarted my computer, I was able to successfully update to iOS 5.

Otherwise, just update to iOS 5 on someone elses computer. That also works.

worked like a charm. apparently if you ever edited your host files to downgrade (saurik's own downgrading method), then it screws up the updates.

I had the exact same problem. Nothing of the above worked.

Finally found a solution after about 6 hours of research:
1) download iREB-r4
2) rightclick-properties and set the compatibility to win XP SP3
3) run it as administrator and pick your device
4) enable DFU
5) now open iTunes and do the restore :)

I promise :)

Found problem!

I had the same problem on my laptop (Win 7 Home Premium, 64 bit) : during the installation of the iOs 4.3.5, I was getting a 3194 error code.
The solution was commenting out the line with gs.apple.com in the hosts file under the Windows/System32/drivers/etc folder.
I hope it's the same for you guys...

PS: I spent hours searching on Google and forums about this error. I´ve uninstalled antivirus and updated Windows, restarting the laptop few times for the updates to take effect and consequently spending a lot of time, let´s say 4 hours, before this issue was solved.
Apple should really start to make our user´s life simpler, that´s all...

Which forums? A simple search of the Apple developer forums shows the solution. I found it in 30 seconds. Apple's developer forum is pretty good.

Thanks. I also get this error trying to install the GM on my ipad....

On my WIN 7 machine, the end of my host file shows

# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
#127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com

i had the same exact problem but i fixed it by deleting the 3 lines you added to the host file, then i saved it and restated my computer. My update to ios 5 worked perfectly after that. :D
i hope this works for you

From putting "where is the hosts file in windows vista" into Google the first link tells you how to find and edit it.
