I actually preferred that Safari doesn't have tabbed browsing. It clutters the screen and it's hard to tab when you have loads open. That being said the multi finger tab swipe may make it better.

yeah i agree, the tabbed browsing sure takes a lot of space away from the content... it definitely is faster switching from tab to tab, but i liked the focus of the windowed browsing.

Hopefully soon they will update it so as you scroll down the page, the tabs disappear off the top, and when you scroll back to the top, they get pulled back down. Other browsers can do it and it works smoothly. Maybe when the "reader" mode becomes available.

I'm loving every minute of no checkerboard and split keyboard!! Plus the whole thing feels faster and mail works again!!! Yesss

I wish I had some iOS developer friends to register my UDID to try iOS 5 :D

no checkerboarding, you get white screen instead.
that's just really the same thing no ?

Call me crazy, but I think I may be the only one that prefers the checkerboard over the white...

one little UI tweak that i LOVE is that when you open a new page/tab, and the search list pops up, you dont have to tap outside it to clear it first... you can simply tap your bookmarks icon once now, and that dropdown list pops up.

The checks had a purpose in that you know you weren't just scrolling through a blank page or blank space on a page. I don't see the improvement in getting rid of them either.

Guys, it's not the color or pattern of the space, it's the time spent looking at it while a page you were just looking at reloads. That was extreamly frustrating. Now with the tabs, in iOS 5, you can jump between them pretty instantaneously.

Thanks. It looks like the checkerboard has been replaced with white screen. Ironically the YouTube link in your post caused my iPad to have the safari white screen problem.
Damn. I thought there were actual performance improvements, instead of smoke & mirrors, in the form of a whitewash.
Also, does iOS 5 fix the Safari white screen problem? (when you click a YouTube link, and go to the YouTube app and then go back to Safari, the screen is whited out, and you have close Safari in the Multitasking tray, to fix it.)

If you're crazy them I am too! At least with the checkerboard you can tell the page is still scrolling. A completely white screen doesn't give you the same cues. It could well feel like the browser has just hung.

The problem isn't the checkerboard per se, it's that we see it too often. Hopefully Apple have improved this as well.

Edit: I forget to ask; could someone with the beta do an extreme test of the tab reloading. I'd suggest loading 6 or 7 tabs and then playing a couple of big games (eg. Infinity Blade/Rage HD). Do any of the tabs need to reload when you go back to Safari?

Crashes all the time.
They seriously have some work to do on this baby.

Wish they would include home page selection, their almost there having included many of the JB features, just not quite yet.

It will get better down the line.
