I better start practicing my Amererican accent. If it's like any other voice recognition software I have used, such as the android one, they struggle to understand us Aussies.

Try Nuance's Dragon Dictation in the App Store - it's been optimised for Australian accents for a while. It's the same cloud-based system that Apple will be using.

Nuance have been advertising their desktop dictation software heavily in Melbourne on tram stops the last few months.

soo why can't why say that apple "copy" this feature, and the status bar from android?? no one says that?? but they say samsung copied from them. can someone explain that?

Very intriguing. But I've heard this kind of thing many times before...

Can someone who has used the similar system for Android comment on how useful it is in practice?

If it's really useful, I hope Apple can get it to work without an Internet connection.

I test drove an HTC Thunderbolt for a couple weeks (generous friend at Verizon). Speaking destinations for Google Navigator, Maps, Google Places, etc. are what I found most useful.

I've already named mine Ziggy. Like from Quantum Leap. My friends have named there's Hal, Vicky and Jarvis. We are total geeks I know........ However I have been waiting for this so I can can get answers from Ziggy. Cause hey like I said I'm a dork.

neat feature!

I have a Droid ( given to me by my work not my choice, haters! :) )
and it has this feature and I never bothered to use it until I just saw that demo. I had assumed that it would be pitiful like most systems I used in the late 90's. It's great! Shame on my for assuming, I guess!

Maybe for driving in a car without looking... that may be a few features away though

Apparently Ziggy says there is a 50 percent chance the iPhone 5 will come out this month lol......

Voice recognition is usually impractical. Before you downvote me, consider how often you type things into your phone that you may not want everyone around you to hear for privacy reasons...."

i consistently use similar functions now. driving, in subway, walking, meeting up at a restaurant, on location, in editing suite, at clubs, tons of uses.....

" At home it may work, and even then, some things you don't even want your family to hear..."

uhhh, well my family is my gf and there are not many things i don't want her to hear...of course, i can't speak for others who may have secret lives' (actually sounds kinda like a bad movie idea, but...who knows?)

for me, as long as it delivers, I'm ready....

Meh

You talk into the phone, fills in the text, and hit send. The other person gets the text, they talk into their phone, fills the text, and they hit send. Why not cut out the middle man and CALL THEM!!!!! ha ha

In the past I didn't have to wait in line for the new iPhone because AT&T didn't let me upgrade until September, now I'm gonna be in line with everybody else, again.

i wonder if the developers will at least get this in the gm build (whenever that is). Most likely if we don't get it in the gm it will be an iPhone 5 feature.

This is neat but I'm not SUPER interested in speech-to-text per se. I am really excited about the so-called "Assistant", or whatever Apple does with its purchase of Siri. That would be a typically Apple-executed thing - not necessarily first (Android's speech is far more advanced than iOS'), but useful, executed sharply, and potentially trend-setting.

Maybe we can have something super advanced like, "Play song:"! :p

If the recipient is not able to receive calls and is therefore texting you. :)

I agree totally. I'm more interested in the integration of the Siri artificial intelligence tech than the voice recognition (though it's nice to have).

Thanks...

I'm imagining using it to "jot" down quick notes. E.g.
"remember to get eggs"
"Bob's phone number is 123-4567"
Of course, what I'd *really* like is for the software to automatically enter the data in the right place, but I guess that's a dream for now.

Well then they wouldn't be using text to speech then, would they?, lol. I do see the value to it. But not so much for everyday life.

Good point on SiRi.

Nothing wrong with copying. Consumers win in the end. Oh and I'd ignore the idiots constantly attacking Samsung, they aren't true tech enthusiasts. Just sad fanboys.

iPhone 5 (4s) predictions
1 - iPhone 4 look
2 - Updated Cameras
3 - iPad 2 ARM processor (probably more RAM)
4 - GSM and CDMA 3G all in one (ATT, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint)
5 - Unlock option for US buyers
6 - iOS voice input

iPhone 6 will be brand new redesign, bigger screen, wireless charging, LTE support. This will be a significant change like iPhone 3G/3GS to iPhone 4.

iPhone 5 (4s) will be a great revision. A lot of people will probably think, that it is not worth updating to from the iPhone 4. The same thing happened with the iPhone 3G to iPhone 3GS. This time Apple can count on the original 3GS customers to upgrade (they have had the phone for 2+ years), and new customers from T-Mobile and Sprint to keep breaking sale records. Along with giving people the option to buy unlocked from day 1 (fingers crossed).

You can do that on Android by saying "Note to self..."

I hope the iOS version has all and more voice commands a la Android's. Its just really useful. Also, WP7 is going similar commands with the release of Mango, so I'd love to see Apple jump on board too.
