1136x640 is Full HD now ? Missing quite a few lines to even be 720p.

Well you're right about the lines of resolution, but forgetting this is marketing and advertisers don't much care about technicalities.

The 16:9 will be sold as 'native widescreen retina to watch your HD movies as never before' or whatever.

This is a hack of the software - not them unlocking some hidden feature.

RTFA.

It says the 5th row only appears if you set the simulator to have a resolution of precisely 1136x640.

They have not added the 5th row by hacking, only forcing the resolution to 1136x640 was a hack, the 5th row being added is a new feature. It also only works at this precise resolution and with iOS 6.

I pretty much rewrote the article just for you. Next time just RTFA.

What's the point of a proportionately bigger screen? To take up more room in your pocket? Just hold the phone closer to your face.

A longer screen actually allows for new/expanded fields.

How long will we need an icon for every single app?
Will we ever get unity- or some function of conformity when iPhone has pages upon pages of single apps.

There has to be a way for this to be.

They should tie the UI to the app store categories, make the UI customizable with bigger icons and the like. Make the all the screens special for he users, and get rid of the 2007 box's upon boxes of apps. When you download an app- it can put it in the right category (or one can be customized at the users discretion). Bring in some swipes and directional navigation to quick access your groups/categories.

IDK, iOS works and sells; but they cannot and should not rest on their laurels for too much longer. IMO it's stale- and Mail is starting to rot the most.

iOS is no longer innovative, it's complacent with some tweaks.

This higher 4" screen (if true) just adds another "layer" for much of same.

This is terrible news! An elongated phone does not make sense at all! I like the current screen size. I am willing to go a bit bigger but I want it proportionally bigger. I know people complain about every new iPhone that comes out. But this is completely different. The iPhone 4/4s always looked sexy. This is plain stupid and I hope to God that somehow this isn't true. I don't know what I am going to do.

If the phone is too wide, you cannot hold it comfortably. The length doesn't matter. Actually, this way, the mic will be closer to your mouth when you talk on the phone, and the aspect ratio will be 16:9, the standard.

Isn't it rather obvious that the most likely screen enlargement will either be a new row or a new column of icons (or both)? That keeps everything pixel-perfect, ie, the distances between the icons, between the icons and the borders and the size of the icons can stay exactly the same.

Any other size increase would either mean different icon spacing and/or different icon size. While different icon spacing is easily implemented, different icon sizes require completely re-done icons for all applications (icons are designed down the pixel, they are not scaled vector graphics). And a different icon spacing (what I think is how it is implemented in Android) would probably not look as well balanced as the current implementation is. Some in-between Android devices (eg, 5" ones) do look a bit like blown-up smartphones because of this.

Scalability. Everything is optimized for 16:9 because every new display on the market and every portable device/tablet besides the iPhone and the iPad has been optimized for 16:9 for years. Even the MacBooks are 16:9.

You think the iTV is going to be something other than 16:9?

Am I a little disappointed in the screen resolution? Sure. Will this affect my decision upgrading from my current iPhone 4? No.

I've always said the current 3.5 inch is a great size. It fits great in your pocket and hand(unlike the Galaxy Note).

But with this being leaked as a taller iPhone, I'm kind of OK with it. It won't affect my pocket or how its held in my hand.

And as much as I'm starting to believe the leaks and photos of the next iPhone, Apple always surprises us in some way.

I look forward to the upcoming announcement.

Not quite everyone.

This (former) iPhoner has gone S3.

It's going to be an interesting fall...

Same here. And yes, this will be an interesting year for Apple if they do release a slightly taller 4" phone. But I never will underestimate their marketing techniques on the general public.

Umm not exactly. With the exception of the 11.6" MBA, all MacBooks are 16:10, and so are most non-iPad tablets.

i thought the macbooks were 16:10, also most tvs arent 16:9

Apple will call it Retina. Since it's just a term Apple invented out of thin air, whatever they call Retina is Retina.
Since it has the same PPI and the same viewing distance (or maybe a slightly larger viewing distance) it will automatically fulfil the same definition in regard to 'retina' as the iPhone 4.

i have no doubt that they will introduce a larger screen iphone. but my question is why? they have to have a reason and adding an extra row of icons can't be the reason. will the extra space make apps that much more useful? Most apps won't make use of it until they're re-written. The fonts won't be bigger (which is something i'd like). Apple has to have some extremely compelling reason to do this or they wouldn't and i can't come up with it.
